Moved to a house with solar, so switched from Alinta (previous house) to EnergyAustralia, both in QLD.
As my last power bill was quite recent, I found the cost to be almost double of what I was expecting. After some further checking, I found that they are charging me for "Energex: De-energisation - No CT" the amount of $74.26.
I tried finding where did this cost come from, and only found:
Energy Australia doesn't charge anything or is not charged by Energex, not sure
This table from Canstar which says $11.58
I called the Energy Ombudsman to learn about this fee and they said that they don't know about it.
I called Alinta and, after a bit of wait, I was told that Queensland users shouldn't be charged anything at all for disconnection and said that they will remove it immediately.
I've got nothing to complain about their service and the rates, but this one looked a bit dodgy to me. It is quite unfair to insert a random $74 charge when you have so much stuff going on during a house move.
Anyway, I guess it's worth everyone who had a final bill with Alinta double-checking this.
It'll only be you. The staff member who processed the order in their system has selected the wrong order/billing code. Mistakes happen.
Unless your house is a factory or something there is zero chance you have Current Transformer metering installed and if you're simply moving out they didn't need to book a de-energisation.
