Offer Ends Sunday 31st of July 11:59 PM
    2 days left on deal
    Shipping 4-7 Business days

Something is not adding up for me

    • Hi Stevie,

Not sure it’s clear enough in the description but you have 2 days to buy the SIM and be eligible for the refund.

I couldn’t care if you took a year to activate it, the $ are sitting in my bank account until it becomes activated.

So to be clear, you have 2 days to be eligible for the deal.

I hope this clears things up for you.

      Regards,

      James

Pretty sure they’re commenting about this line

          Ooooh,

          OK, my bad. Sorry OP.

          Thanks for pointing it out!

      • Going back to the 2 days remaining for this deal thing and step 6 on how to use "Once you receive your Starter Kit in the mail, apply the microchip & activate your service" and "USD $9.95 refund upon activation of SIM"

Doesn't this mean people need to pay for express postage to get their sim card and activate before the deal is over (bcos otherwise its 4-7 business day shipping)?
Or is the service activated once we download the app and scan the barcode?

Edit: i just realised that the 2 days remaining for this deal will put it on a Sunday regardless. So only the 2nd question stands.

        • +1

          Hi Divine,

Apologies for the confusion, I was slighty distracted by the SNOW falling at the AFL game on the TV as I posted the deal!!

The deal is valid for any purchase made before midnight Sunday regardless of when you actually activate it. I'd expect many would want to do that soon as possible so that they get their refund sooner, but it is entirely up to you.

For the record, The SIMS must be activated before April 2021.

          Once activated, they last FOREVER.

Well, until you change your telco or upgrade your phone to an eSIM enabled model.

I hope this clears things up a little.

          Regards,

          James

  • I'm getting $23.90 for the Japan 10gb sticker sim?

Also, is the sim limited to the listed networks, or will it roam to any available network?

    • Hi incipient,

You this deal is for the starter kit only. You can purchase the data plan in App or via the website, by choosing the ‘no sim’ data only option.

It’s only for the listed networks, which are subject to change.

See: www.Flexiroam.com/coverage for an up to date list

      I hope this helps,

      James

    • Two things to point out here…

Flexiroam charge $18.90 USD for the 10GB japan package when you prebook it more than 90 days prior to activation.

This is listed on their website:

*Indicates 70% off pricing when you book 90 days ahead.
Get 50% off retail price when you book 1 month ahead.

So if you're traveling soon or booking/paying for data last minute (or less than 1 month prior to using it) expect the Japan pack to be US$63 or a massive AU$92 (at the current exchange rate).

Regarding the networks they've got a full list here:
      https://www.flexiroam.com/coverage

In Japan they use AU (KDDI) 4G and DoCoMo 3G and 4G.

So activation does not require actual plan purchase?
How long will it remain "activated" fit plan access?
Can I purchase multiple (say 3-4) and have full refund on all or do I need to tell each person I want this for to purchase it themselves?
Are we limited to use the outbound calling feature or will any other app that also has this feature incl. Video chat do?

    • Hi Stevie,

Correct. The SIM lasts forever. Happy for you to order multiple, saves me on postage. But each has to be activated to get the refund.

You can use any VoIP or messaging app you wish. It’s just a nifty little feature.

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,

      Janes

  • If I end up getting my SIM replaced or if I change SIM cards, can I move this microchip over, or will I have to buy a new one?

    • Hi reidy,

Great question. Flexiroam advise that they will replace “at their discretion” so I guess that means they would as long as no one was abusing the system.

I’d offer to, but I’m giving the SIM away in the 1st place! Also I don’t have mechanism in place at the minute to track it, and don’t want to make a promise that would come back to bite me.

      Cheers,

      James

  • Hi James, I am going to order several SIMs for my family members as per your offer to refund . Just to confirm, I will only need to activate all sims and don't need to purchase any data package straight away to get all refunds?
Also, if I change my Australian mobile provider and keep the SIM card to which the microchip is attached, does this SIM need to be active in order to utilize the Flexiroam microchip attached to it? Thanks

    • Hi lado,

      Correct.

No, it doesn’t. The Flexiroam microchip will still function.

      Cheers,

      James

  • Wonder if anybody has done their comparisons between this and Starhub HappyRoam
Also being an .AU site, you should be clear on your site that the prices listed is USD not AUD. As this would potentially open you to lawsuits around misleading advertising.

    • Hi Iplau,

Starhub HappyRoam is quite a good product, like many things in life, it depends on your requirements!

      Some of the major differences:

      Flexiroam cover 150+ countries
      HappyRoam: 17

The rates outside these countries for HappyRoam are Brutal!

Flexiroam microchip coexists with your home SIM (and you can switch back to check SMS etc)
Flexiroam also has an eSIM option available

HappyRoam has to be collected in person at Changi Airport.
Flexiroam is good to go at touchdown!

Flexiroam has far more flexible and granular data plan options available.
Flexiroam can share data plans between SIMs

I'll concede that the rates for Canada are pretty good on HappyRoam!
I presume HappyRoam gives you a Singapore mobile number?

Of course a tricky OzBargainer can stick there Flexiroam microchip over their HappyRoam!! ;)

RE currency. Unfortunately Shopify lock you into a currency after your 1st transaction. We try to clearly mark USD where possible. The product is for travellers after all!

Also, we don't charge GST for the same reason.

      Thanks for your comments!

      Regards,

      James

    • I use the Starhub Happy Roam and for me the biggest difference is the pricing.

StarHub is 1GB for $3 and you can purchase as you go. To get the cheap prices flexiroam list here then you need to prebook 90 days prior to use.

  • +1

Thanks James, ordered 3 SIMs. Cheers

  • +1

Where it says share data, are you talking about using mobile as hotspot only or can my 3-4 family members all with their own Flexiroam micro chip share data from a single plan (ie no hot spot required)?

  • Possible to use it without the Flexiroam app? e.g. within a portable hotspot device like a Netgear AC810S or M1.

    • Hi iplau,

Yes, you can use the normal Flexiroam SIM as you would any other SIM. You still need to activate the SIM with the app, but thereafter you can just put the SIM in a device and configure the APN settings.

Note that you need the app to monitor usage, purchase data plans, share data and make Flexiroam VoIP calls

This OzBargain deal only covers the microchip I’m afraid, as we’re running quite low on SIMs. You are welcome to purchase at normal pricing if you wish.

      Cheers,

      James

Have used this for all over Europe. No problems whatsoever.
James offers awesome support for activation!

    • +1 for this. Excellent support!

  • Anything that covers New Caledonia?

    • The single network in New Caledonia charges an arm and a leg to inbound roaming networks. As a result any roaming sim in New Caledonia is going to be expensive. Telstra prepaid sims are actually the best value with data a crazy $3 per MB many other roaming options are $30 per MB.

The only slightly reasonable data is to get a prepaid local sim from the single provider. Currently a tourist prepaid sim costs around AU$40 and comes with 1GB data (valid for 10 days). Additional data can be added either 2GB ($30), 1GB ($20), 0.5GB ($12) and 0.25GB ($7).

      • Thanks for the post.

I am there for a week for work and was looking for options outside of the hotel / workplace.

Believe the hotel charges about $15/20 per 250mb.

  • I can confirm this plan works but few tricks has to be done.
It is not the best internet but OK
I took T mobile last year for one month deal US$50 it worked better more easy than this one. But more price :)

  • Pity not compatible with NANO size SIMs, so no good for iPhone 5 or later Apple phones,
or for many of the current top Android phones incl Samsung S10.

    Otherwise sounds great!

    • Hi pencilman,

It is compatible with Nano SIM. I’ve had one happily in my iPhone 7 for years.

      Cheers

      James

      • Oh. Is that right? I must have misunderstood.
You said it's for MicroChip SIMS only. Does that not mean MicroSIM?

So it can fit on a standard NanoSIM?
        If so, I'm interested.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Will be travelling a bit in the next couple of years and I've really hated the wasting SIM cards everytime I leave a country.

Just bought one for next month :D

  • Hi OP, just to be clear, I can activate anytime for refund? It just stays on your sim for as long as you like and just activate when you travel?

    Also

Can you swap it to another sim?

    Many Thanks

    • +3

      Hi thats a,

Yes, you can activate anytime. The SIMs expire April 2021 though. Once activated the SIM lasts forever.

I wouldn't advise swapping to another SIM. Technically if you hand steady hands and a scalpel you could give it a crack, but if you do you are on your own!

A good question re the data. Firstly I'll say that you are probably better off using the App to buy your data. I've essentially put up (some/most) of the Data Plans on offer by Flexiroam because people don't want to buy a SIM unless they know the costs of Data Plans.

There are over 6000 Data Plans on offer!!

For the record there is a Canada Data Plan available for USD $2.40 (500MB for 3 Days, bought 90 days in advance)

I haven't put any of the 500MB plans up because I just got bagged out. (OzBargain can be a cruel mistress sometimes)

The key here is that Flexiroam offer big discounts for advance purchases.

      See: https://callcloud.com.au/collections/america-data-plans/prod…

Also, it's good to know that you can Cancel Data Plans in the App:

      https://callcloud.com.au/blogs/travel-hacks/flexiroam-x-canc…

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,

      James

  • Great help, do I just buy the starter in your link Microchip 'SIM Sticker' Starter Kit with 100mb global.

    • Yep,

      No paddlin' for me!

      Regards,

      James

  • With the 90+ days in advance plan, is there a limit of how many days in advance?

    • +1

      Hi tjioer,

I've just scrolled the App out to January 2024 with no issue, so I don't think so.

I'm not sure how far out I've programmed the calendar in my website, I think I did a year.

The early bird catches hes the data worm!

      Cheers,

      James

  • So how does this work, do I just turn the phone on in the destination country and it will switch network automatically, or do I need to go to the app and fiddle around the settings?

    • +2

      Hi tjioer,

      Great question.

Unfortunately it can't switch automatically. (That's where the eSIM comes into it's own).

Yes, you'll need to go into the App, but its quite a painless process. In my view its much easier than messing around with paperclips, but granted not for everyone!

You can check out a video here: (Android is at 1:20 & iOS at 1:36)

  • If I want to order 3, do I need to purchase them separately for the refund or can I buy 3 in one go?

    • +1

I'd prefer all in one go. I'll be doing this manually, and it hasn't got too crazy… yet…

I think I'll be needing some new envelopes though!

      Cheers,

      James

  • Just confirming I don't need to enter any discount code at checkout, do I?

No, I'll be applying it to all microchip orders this weekend!

  • Quite a few negative reviews on Flexiroam on TripAdvisor.

    https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1-i12530-k10152914…

    • +1

      Hi pencilman,

There are also quite a few good ones too! :)

I haven't often known people to rave about their Telco, but I'd comment that many of the negative reviews are about customer service. Although we are merely distributing the SIM, a bonus from buying from us is that we have an incentive to make sure our Flexiroam customers are happy, and do provide an additional layer of support.

We also have a little more clout than an individual customer if they aren't getting the service they need.

When you are getting the SIM for free there is a pretty good incentive for people to make their own decision.

      Cheers,

      James

      • Thanks for the prompt reply, James.
Not questioning your customer service - you've been great on Ozb.

Was just researching how the Flexiroam service performs in use, and whether anyone has had problems with their SIM after sticking the Flexiroam add on.

        • Hi Pencilman,

No worries. I've had mine in for almost 3 years with no issue, and I've only had 2 failed install since selling them (one was my Dad).

I've been quite conservative in recommending the microchip particularly to less tech savvy users, but its actually usually the tech savvy blokes who dive in without reading instructions first that run into problems

The actual service is pretty good. I've used it in Japan, USA & NZ. Like with all tech things, if you encounter an issue typically a phone reboot will fix things!

Being halfway up a mountain in a 3rd world country and complaining the service isn't very fast is probably more likely to be a coverage issue!

The real key to Flexiroam in my view is the flexibility of the plans & being able to share data wherever you are in the world.

I'm not a big data user, but have in the past just used it for messaging, Uber, etc. For those that need huge amounts of data, a local SIm will almost always be cheaper. Flexiroam can still add value by using it even for the just the time you arrive at a destination, and need to get out of the airport asap.

You can always buy a cheaper local SIM at a location once you're settled.

I'm personally astounded at how many people buy mail order SIMs from the UK, but that's what people do.

I'd also add that like with many products, there are some clever little tricks & loopholes.

We'll be posting them soon in true OzBargain spirit!

          Cheers,

          James

  • Any deal coming soon on esims?

    • +1

      Hi henrus,

It's like you read my mind! I don't have as many eSIMs though. I have to wait 24 hours between posts on OzB. So stay tuned!

      Cheers,

      James

      • Sounds great… I can't mind read (yet) but did get a new pixel recently so looking for a few travel esims to add to the collection.

  • +2

Flexiroam worked great for me! I recently bought and used 4 Flexiroam sims and the American regions data plan from CallCloud, in a trip around South America. We flexishared the data pack among the 4 Flexiroam SIMs. James was great to communicate with and explained things well.

Worked really well (hassle-free as we were jumping from country to country - it just worked on arrival) especially in the cities, everybody enjoyed the service. The "Flexishare" (i.e. datasharing) feature among multiple SIMs is really great.

Sometimes connection reliability was a bit spotty in less developed areas, but that was to be expected (more of an issue with the local infrastructure, not Flexiroam).

We'll definitely be using Flexiroam again on upcoming travels.

    • Hi Zadax,

Thanks for the kind words, and glad it worked for you. I'm going to add one for those trust pilot rating things on the website, but it's just hard finding time at the moment!

Next will be some better guides & FAQ's then we'll get to that part!

Ultimately, I'd love to build a forum for customers to help each other out (seems to work for Telstra and others).

Finally would be a data exchange where you guys can swap data that you have leftover (or possibly donate, to kids in the less developed countries).

First things first though, I've got to get these SIMs out to you guys, so I can avoid going back to the corporate world!!

      Cheers,

      James

  • Thank you. Just ordered 3. Trip to Japan soon.

      Hi Seiferc,

Thanks for the order. Keep an eye on your inbox as I'll be sending barcodes through to people as soon as I can so that you can link your starter kit & purchase your plans (if you need to take advantage of advance purchase discounts)

Hint: The 5GB for 30 Day Jakota Region Plan actually can work out better value than the individual Japan plans, even though it covers Japan, South Korea & Taiwan! Check it out!

      Cheers,

      James

Thank you James. Would I get 3 barcodes?

          • @Flexiroam: Hi James,

I received the tracking details for the shipping.
However, I just bought an extra two. Not sure if you can combine them, otherwise, its fine.
Old order #1252. New Order #1258.

            Thanks.

            • +1

@Seiferc: Yes, I manged to catch that! I'll ship them together.

I'll be sending out a further email soon.

              Thanks for letting me know!

  • Sorry if this question has already been answered but can you advise if the sticker goes on a Nano sized sim?

    • Hi Breckinn,

Yes it fits all SIM sizes. The only caveat is around 'cut SIMs'. I've never encountered a cut SIM before, but I presume it means a SIM that has been manually cut to fit in a phone?

Anyway, all SIMs I've seen are the pop out 3-in-1 type.

All iPhones are Nano and virtually every other phone.

The Microchip Starter Kit is almost like a Credit Card 'cradle' that you drop your SIM into. You peel back the plastic sticky layer, and the chip affixes on top.

They say a video is a billion words:

      Cheers,

      James

  • Bought 3.
    Looking forward to it.
    Thanks James.

And like the other poster who asked whether it would fit a Nano SIM or not (just like I did) - yes it does.

This is great, I bought 4 for my Dec trip to Japan. Hope the sharing feature works well.

  • Hello James
I like to move my australian ovo (optus network) sim around cos I have 2 phones, an iphone 5c and a samsung note 8. My husband has a vodafone sim that he also moves around as he also has 2 phones-xiaomi redmi note 3 pro and samsung S8. Just wondering if that will void the microchip sticker. I want to buy 2 but will only activate one in September 2019 for my husband and the other in January 2020, will i get my refund separately? The plans that you have shown above are plans 90+ days in advance, any chance of seeing some examples of the plans that are less than 90 days esp to Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya, Kobe, Osaka).
    Thanks in advance
    Debbie

    • Hi Debbie,

I think I understand what you are asking?

I'l assume that perhaps you have a separate phone for work? Anyway, I guess it doesn't matter. (I just ask in case say your employer wouldn't want you sticking the microchip over a work supplied SIM?)

I believe the simple answer here is that you are better off with a normal SIM. (I do get they aren't free with this promo) :)

To your question, the microchip won't void if it is placed int a different phone.

It best to view it as any other SIM, however it won't connect unless it's told to do so by the Flexiroam X App. The normal SIM underneath will always connect 1st. If the SIM underneath is not active, it also won't affect the operation of the microchip.

You could have the Flexiroam X App on both phones and use it with the same microchip on your OVO SIM.

You could also have two different microchips, one on the OVO SIM and one on another SIM (I presume you have another SIM, whether it be work or another personal SIM). In this case, you would need to create two Flexiroam X Accounts, because you can't have more than 1 SIM per account.

You can use a different mobile, email, FB or WhatsApp Account to create multiple accounts.

The catch here is that the Data Plan you purchase will be applied to a single Account. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact you can share your Data Plan to other Flexiroam users.

If you did activate the SIMs separately they would be refunded separately, but there is no real reason to not activate one because they last forever. (There is 100MB of Global Data included with each Starter Kit, but it lasts for 360 days).

If someone is gaming our offer by getting multiple SIMs just for the 100MB, I guess they can, but it would be quite a painful way to get free data!! (!'m not suggesting this is you!!) :)

With the plans, if you click on the examples you will go through to our website where you can view the different pricing tiers. You could also download the Flexiroam X App, and check out all of the plans in the App, it probably more user friendly and they have more plans on offer (particularly small ones). I am merely reflecting the plans that are in the App, hopefully without making any mistakes!!

      I hope this makes sense!!

      Cheers,

      James

      • Thanks James. Will make a purchase tomorrow. Will contact you if I have any probs understanding the procedures to activate and the plans. Does it mean that if I download the app, I can see the plans?

  • Hi James, I just bought 4 microchips and have installed the app on my S9+. Can I buy data now and; scan barcode and activate service later?

    • Hi dreamer,

I'll send you the barcode. This is the 1st step in activation, but once scanned you can buy your data plan. (I'll also give you a discount code) ;)

The activation occurs once you install the microchip and connect to the Flexiroam network (even for a second).

      Cheers,

      James

      • Thanks James. Just had a thought about the SIM card that the microchip will be attached to. I think I read in comments above that a SIM does not need to be in active service for the microchip to work. That is important to me as I don't want to use the microchip on my work SIM. I do have plenty of discarded SIMs in my drawer. Can you please confirm?

          Hi dreamer,

That is correct. It does seem a bit silly to be putting a microchip on a dormant SIM, because we sell normal SIMs too!

A normal SIM doesnt require the Flexiroam App once activated, so its really what you should be using.

I get I'm distorting things with this offer, but I'm really low on normal SIMs, so fair enough!

I'll probably run an eSIM promo soon, but I'll have to get more SIM stock before I attempt something similar with conventional SIMs!!

          Cheers,

          James

I will be travelling to HK, Thailand and Myanmar between Dec-Jan so will be trying this out.
The data share feature sounds amazing.
    Buying two "free" sims :)

    • Im surprised you havent checked out the Egypt plans!!

      cheers for the order.

Myanmar has got to be interesting, I'll expect a full report!

      Cheers,

      James

      • Hi James,
I've checked my junk and haven't received an email with my barcodes yet. When should I expect to receive it?
        Thanks.

        • Hi sphinxy,

It should be any minute now! I'm trying to setup a nice template, but the orders keep flooding in!

          Sit tight!

          Cheers,

          James

          • @Flexiroam: Thanks! Got it and activated them in the app. Now just waiting for the film's to arrive so I can connect to the network.
I noticed in the app there is a message for 30% off for 24hrs - any reason why I won't use this instead?
            Thanks.

              @sphinxy: Hi sphinxy,

You are free to use whatever you want. :)

Typically, most of the in App promo's are for Global Data Plans.

These aren't for the average OzBargainer!!

They provide Global coverage in 160 countries and have quite long expiry. They also support the in App outbound VoIP feature.

Good if you use very little data or or visiting some very exotic countries.

              Check out the pricing!! ;)

              Cheers,

              James

Thanks, reading through the details and reviews have ordered one for each of us. This will be so much more convenient than 3 UK data SIMs as they will stay active for years.

  • Are these sim stickers incompatible with dual sim phones?
I have a xiaomi dual sim phone.
Aldi prepaid in slot 1 and telstra prepaid in slot 2 (use this sim for data only)

I usually use starhub in slot 2 on trips to singapore, but an upcoming trip in December I will also be visiting Malaysia and Indonesia

Assuming I can use this product in a dual sim phone do i just have to purchase "plans" for each region.

Could i just apply this sim sticker to a dormant sim in slot 2 or would i use it on my Aldi sim in slot 1

    Thanks

    • We don't recommend the microchip for Dual SIM phones. It can work, but the dual SIM phones slots are typically narrower.

We would recommend a standard SIM Card which we also sell. Unfortunately they aren't part of this promo, as I'm too low on stock.

Once you have any version of our SIM (Microchip/SIM/eSIM) you can top up Data Plans as you wish.

      I hope this helps.

      Cheers James

      • Ok, Thanks for the reply.

Probably Starhub or Singtel make more sense for us for our upcoming trip.

Might be going to the states next year and will look at flexiroam then.

        • Hi Smudger,

The HappyRoam product looks quite good.

As @DivineEquinox21 has also asked, there possibly would be some merit in getting a Flexiroam microchip and putting it on a Starhub or 3UK SIM and keeping it as a "doublethreat" Travel SIM.

I believe some of the 3UK SIMs are re-usable as long as you use them every 6 months, and Starhub looks like it stays active too.

I might consider getting a few and then pre-applying them for customers..

          Not today though.. too tired!!

          Cheers,

          James

    • Thanks James, I just sorted out my Japan trip with a side trip to Taiwan. Also grateful for the 20% discount code, saved me US$4.56.

  • Anther question James, just wondering if i can put the sticker on one of my old sim cards (which are no longer in use) effectively turning it into a dedicated "flexiroam sim card" and just pop that sim in when travelling. Rather then putting it ontop of my current sim as i do switch carriers quite often (living that ozb bonus stuff on new plan signup life :) ).

Apologies if you've already answered this as i know alot of questions have been asked, just too much for me to read and filter through. You're doing a fantastic job at answering questions in detail!

    • Hi Divine,

You can do that, however from above:

      "Hi dreamer,

That is correct. It does seem a bit silly to be putting a microchip on a dormant SIM, because we sell normal SIMs too!

      James"

      I hope this helps..

      • Thanks! Guess that's how i'll be doing it for now, and i'll be waiting patiently for your conventional sim offer :)

Thanks James, you are great to communicate with and explain things very well. Christmas trip to Europe sorted out, bought 4 local Data Packs and successfully applied the 20% discount code. Fantastic job and efforts, James.

  • So I purchase base on rates for local pricing and it goes up before I can even activate and buy?!

  • Pricing was competitive with the 70% discount when purchasing 90+ days in advance. With only 30% discount it's generally going to work out much cheaper to get a local SIM.

  • The price for all the above data value plans for purchase 90+ days in advance have increase more than 2x.

    • Yes. V disappointing.
Previous 90 day advance purchase plans were attractive compared to the hassle of picking up a local SIM on arrival.
Now no longer worth it - real pity.
Flexiroam will hopefully reconsider their advance pricing, otherwise no one will bother using their product.
