Looking for a light-use, long-term data only mobile package

I've just recently bought a Windows tablet with LTE and I'm looking for a good mobile data plan. I don't expect to use data all that much but I don't want to have to think about it when I do need it so I want something with a long expiry, but I also don't want to be paying $150 for a year-long 25gb package when I don't know if I'll use half that, or twice that.
Something like Belong's $10 for 1gb per month that stocks up all my leftover data each month seems like a winner but I don't really want to be on Telstra.
Any alternatives I should be considering?

  • Hotspot your phone data.

    • Spotphone your data hot.

    • I've had bad experiences with that, whether it's my phone or my old laptop I'd get disconnected randomly and then I need to concern myself with the battery life of both devices, not just one. Easier to just leave the tablet behind in that case.

  • +1

but I don't really want to be on Telstra.

Why do you dislike Telstra? Some of the recent Telstra deals are surprisingly good, like $15/month for 5GB at full speed, and then unlimited "up to 1.5Mbps" if you go over 5GB. Month to month contract, no lock-in. Deal here, the "Extra Small" plan: https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/data-plans

I saw the deal mentioned on this page: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/475585

Personal preference mostly, they block a few websites I use and the workarounds are unreliable. Easier to just get on a network that lets me choose which sites I can visit. Does look like a good plan though, I'll keep it under consideration.

  • Tether to your phone = free

  • What's wrong with telstra? If you already know that it has less coverage than other providers you must have the other providers in your mind already that have the better coverage.

  • I have an old $50 a year for 5gb prepaid from Telstra.

  • I was going to recommend Boost Mobile's $150 per year (80GB plus unlimited calls and text) plan but it's on Telstra network.

    What's wrong with Telstra?
