Best eBay Alternative for Selling 2nd Hand Items (vote)

I used to love eBay, I sell most of my second-hand items on eBay, like 2nd-hand phones, laptops, electronics, toys, ozbargain stuff.
But the 10.9% fee + Paypal 2.6% fee is just too much.

I just can't see making worthwhile money anymore for the effort spend.

I don't like Gumtree either, simply because shipping the items is much easier than arranging pick-up meeting.

I must try alternatives and break this monopoly, but also realise that traffic is important. No traffic no buyer, no bids, no money.

What would be the best alternative to sell my stuff? These sites I found by Googling, but not sure how good they are.

My criteria:

  1. Must be able to ship and pay remotely and securely like Paypal (I don't mind the 2.6%)
  2. Fixed price or auction only. No negotiation.

Facebook marketplace, no fees and a little safer than gumtree (people usually have their personal accounts tied to their selling and buying instead of anonymous always).

Shipping the item and paying fees isn't worth it unless you have something very rare but only if interest to very few people and you need to exposure of a global marketplace. In which case ebay is fine.

    • Would prefer something not like gumtree. I don't want to negotiate, too much effort. I want to set a fix price, take it or leave it, or auction it.

      • No other site is going to have even a fraction of the traffic of eBay. Probably less traffic than gumtree or Facebook and you'll still have to pay fees. You'll end up making less money putting it anywhere else other than these three places.

If you have a very large quantity of goods and want to have less hassle you can give it to allbids.com.au and they'll give you a percentage of whatever they get for it.

  • If another high-traffic eBay-like site exists, then I haven’t heard of it and chances are neither have your potential buyers.
I personally don’t mind the fees, it’s the lights on, lights off throttling that pees me off the most.

I just use Gumtree. Sometimes things sit on there for months until someone buys them. Sometimes they get snapped up in minutes. It is hit and miss, but certainly less hassle than eBay. Not to mention, cheaper.

I arrange collection on my terms (i.e. I choose the location and we work out a convenient time for all). If they don't show, I leave and sell to someone else.

Having to go to a post office when they are open and handle return requests or refund claims is way more of a hassle.

        • which is worse when scrumtree wants a refund and harasses you
also i been robbed by someone from scrumtree.

          • @Rukiata: That's why you don't meet at your home address.

You don't have to refund anyone on gumtree.

          • @Rukiata: lol how did you get robbed?

          • @Rukiata: Meet at a shopping center. Be smart.

To be honest, I only sell low value items on Gumtree - if someone wants to rob the broken, $30 phone then so be it.

        • In my 5 years of selling I've never once had a return. It's easy, you just list any faults with the item, underpromise - overdeliver and don't accept change of mind returns.
The only hassle I get is people who ask me if they can pick things up when I've made it perfectly clear in my listings that I don't allow pickup.

@Some Human: You've been lucky then. Lots of scamming buyers out there.

            • @Quantumcat: I've had maybe 3-5 INRs in the past, but the new tracked letters fixed that problem.
Yeah I guess I have been lucky, but like I said I list any faults and also the ways I might have attempted to fix the faults. 100% honesty. Buyer has no leg to stand on.

                @Some Human:

Buyer has no leg to stand on.

True but doesn't stop them trying it on and having ebay/PayPal totally ignore anything you upload or write

      • With eBay it is too easy for buyers to put a claim in with eBay or Paypal. eBay will side with the buyer.

With Gumtree, I can sell for cash only, local meet up. I never have to see/hear from the person again. There is also no way they can do a chargeback or put a 'paypal' claim in.

Meeting up to sell is much the same as going to the PO, in terms of time, so no big deal.
