Insuring a New Car - Do I Need to Declare past Claim E.g. Hail Damage

Hi All,

In the process of purchasing a new car for the inlaws and while at the dealer they offered to insure the new car at a discounted premium. Just wondering do I need to declare that they had previously claimed in the last 12 months regarding a not at fault claim such as the recent hail storms? Will this affect the premium I pay? Is the insurance linked to driver or MV? My confusion as this is a brand new car but don't want to provide wrong info.

Also, what amount covered do you do - is it value of the car prior to discount from dealer or price paid?

    Put "Yes, Hail Damage"

Maybe get independent Quotes as well…

    • Yes I am sourcing independent quotes as well. What happens if you select multi policy discount but don't actually have it?
For eg. since Suncorp and AAMI are under the same umbrella, does that count as multi policy?

Then they may threaten to not honour the policy if you had to make a claim or make you pay the difference + a penalty before paying out.

It's not worth the hassle and it is also dishonest.

  • purchasing a new car for the inlaws

    I had previously claimed

Whose name will the policy be under?
They will ask something along the line of “Have you had any insurance claims in the last 3/5 years?”.
Don’t lie unless you want your insurance void come claim time.

    • Edited to say "they" had claimed.

You want NRMA new replacement for first 2 years, then agreed value, forget the rest, and don't lie about previous claims.

  • Did they mention discounted premium or you have done the research yourself & compared it to your quotes?

I would get a quote online & do it yourself.

what amount covered do you do - is it value of the car prior to discount from dealer or price paid?

Thats your choice, you can set it. which value do you want to be paid out?

    • On the Suncorp website they offer 15% discount if you have multiple insurances with them. I think you just tick yes or no.
The dealer offered that one, and selected yes, not sure if its because the dealer has some special link to suncorp and gets that multiple policy discount or not based on the number of clients they have. I do not have the policy printout with options selected with me, have to check with inlaws. But on my attempt to get the similar price I am getting a more expensive result.

      • I wouldn't select that you have multiple insurances if you don't. They will most likely check up on it.
