VIC Electricity - Where Are All The Good Plans Gone Post 1 July 2019

Did a plan comparison on the Vic government website and every single retailer's best plan is like 20% more than what I'm paying with Alinta's Fair Deal 43 which I signed up to a few months ago.

So this default energy plan initiative by the government has really pushed up the prices for the bargain hunters.

Check out Tango Energy rates, I've been with them for about 12 months and very happy. No discount BS, just a one-tier rate and for me it's cheaper than other retailers.

    • Just did a check on Tango's website. I'm on flexible pricing. Based on their prices and my usage on my most recent Alinta bill, it's going to be 20% higher.

My Alinta prices at the moment, before the 43% discount on usage, are:

      Off peak $0.216
      Peak $0.4015
      Shoulder $0.3135
      Daily supply $1.188

      • Why are you on flexible pricing. Typically your usage in the peak period will be significantly higher than offpeak.

Compare your current rates with this from Tango in a spreadsheet and see if it's actually more expensive or not:

        • Yes, still 20% more expensive on my bill.

I switched to flexible pricing many years ago when it was first offered as I run most of the heavy usage appliances during off peak or shoulder periods.

Ozbargain's electricity regulation expert, Diji1, will attend to your query shortly. In the meantime, please have your recent political party voting history prepared as that will be scrutinised.

    • Yep it's ready.

Did a plan comparison on the Vic government website

According to the ACCC, that is a scam website, being operated by the Government, that is showing the highest paying commissions for the website operator.

          More fake news from Diji1.

          Government comparator websites
There are a number of comparator websites operated by government agencies. These websites are designed to provide consumers with industry-wide information and they are free of charge.

Often businesses are required by law to provide information to these websites which makes them comprehensive.

For all the Victorians who voted for Andrews second term you deserve this crap state government.

Enjoy your free tampons and what other gimmicks that were offered throughout the last state election from the same party that had to cheat their way to be elected in the first place.

Kennett privatised gas & electricity cause he's a knob.

PS. Post the free tampons as a deal

  • You need to say what distribution area you're in if you want specific recommendations.

    • United Energy

  • Used to be if you could find great offers but the rub was after your contract expired you got reverted to their standing offer which had terrible rates. That’s how they made money and that was the standard retail energy business model.

With the new VIC laws I think any rate that your contract reverts to once initial period expires needs to be at least as good as the VDO so the incentive to offer a loss leader rate has disappeared.

Probably better for all of us but no good in letting energy retailers offer deals
