  • Can I connect a passive subwoofer to the L/R output channels? I was given an old Bose Acoustimass AM-5 (2.1). Looks like this

    The L/R cube speakers daisy chain off the subwoofer.

    • From what I can tell, this receiver has a subwoofer pre-out.
      Which is for active subwoofers.

      I’ve also got a good passive sub at the moment, and I’ve found that very few low end receivers support them. And that it usually ends up at least as cheap just to buy a brand new active Sub with a lower end receiver.
      Which I find quite disappointing.

      An alternative might be to buy a separate amp just for the sub.

        There's a very good reason for why most receivers don't include an amp to drive a Sub.

        Low frequencies are the hardest to drive, vs mids and highs. The power output per channel of the other channels would drop dramatically if they included an active out for the sub.

        I'd just go buy a second hand stero amp and run it that way. Downside is, it won't auto turn on/off.

        • Oh no I understand the logic behind it.

          It’s just unfortunate.
          Because I would like a newer AV receiver with hdmi pass through, hdmi CEC, maybe even Bluetooth not that I need it.

          But given my 90s receiver is still more than powerful enough for my giant speakers and massive sub, I can do without the new features.
          At least for the cost associated of getting new parts.

            @Rail Rider95: Very true. Some of the older stuff is pretty sweet gear.

            You could always buy a amp plate for your passive sub?

              @thargelios: Oh it’s incredible!
              And sound hasn’t really changed much in decades.
              So you’re only missing out on the small modern integration features.

              Yeah I’ve thought about it. Would mean I’d need to tune the system a bit, but it’s absolutely the way I’d go.
              I actually mentioned it above as an option.

                @Rail Rider95: You did! I missed that.

                But there's 'challenges' with either fitting the plate etc. Ahh the joys of audio.

        Thanks for that.

        Someone kindly lent me a HTIB. It's a very old one, AVJ-X77. It shows 80W/ch and additional 150W for the subwoofer.

        I hooked up the Bose set and it worked. Wasn't sure how far I could turn up the volume in case I blew the Amp up. It seems to work OK. Didn't get the doof doof base but I'm not into that. Just wasn't sure if the sub was being driven properly or it's not meant to be felt. I know it's working as I can feel the vibrations with my hand on the case.

    Background plate image in that listing is oh soo wrong!
    Here's what is really is.
    https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_…

    It's 5.1, not 7.2.2 as in the listings image.

    • Yeah, Stupid BingLee lol
