The Essential (2 CD Per) Albums $9.99 @ JB Hi-Fi

80

Starts Tomorrow 8/8 in-store, or available online now.

Many different artists available.

Browse this link.

Or search for “The Essential [Artist Name] CD” in JB HiFi search bar.

So $10 is quite average discount price for New CD’s these days, but thought these were worth it since they are all 2x CD albums. Delivery cost for CD’s from JB was quite cheap. Last time I ordered a 1x CD album they charged $1.60 for Delivery in Sydney.

Good deal if you still prefer physical copy or as a gift to someone else.

All ‘The Essential’ CD’s are recently released (you can check date in description) and as far as I know the most recent Digital Remasters of original tracks.

I am sure this has been mentioned in a thread somewhere, but with online digital purchases from certain providers, they can decide to end the licenses for your purchases and you can lose your purchases & the ability to play the downloaded files (especially if it is a low-selling purchase).

Note: A few of the ‘The Essential’ CD’s are still regular price ($15-$25) & some may only be 1x CD. So please check price & description.

Never heard of him, I'll stream so his stuff on Google music, of which there seems to be a tonne…. no doubt I would know of some of it

Here are some others in the sale I am familiar with Boz Scaggs, Gipsy Kings, Sarah McLachlan (know by song ‘Angel’), Toto (know by song “I Won’t Hold You Back”).

      • +4

That's the song you know Toto by?

        • While growing up yes I thought it was quite iconic. To be fair it’s the only song I have heard by them.

Thirty-eight Weird Al tracks for just $9.99.

    My life is now complete.

  • Hard to justify the cost compared to a streaming subscription.

    • Not dissing your deal, OP
I've stopped buying CDs like 15 years ago, just had no time in ripping them into tracks then making compilation albums of my own.
These days people just play out of their subscription services on the phone, easy to link to the car audio, and a variety that CDs can never hope to match.

An artist had better be damn good to be worth the effort in manual MP3 loading into a phone.

I will keep my Eiffel 65 CD album till i get shoved to a nursing home, tho

        Thank you for your comment.
Yes I understand that streaming for most modern people (those of younger age) is just the way to go, but given I grew up with CD’s, that for me personally is the standard I am used to.

My recent musical tastes tend to be on the rarer side, and therefore I often find it hard to find even a CD copy of albums I am looking for. Sometimes I am lucky on discogs or eBay, but I have searched the Internet far-and-wide and come up with zero many times (for a physical CD or Lossless digital download)(even streaming services turn up with zero here).

I am one of those who prefers to have a physical hard copy of at least part of my collection, which I can then convert to digital lossless files for playback.
Yes I use a DAP for playback, but I like to have a hard copy for a certain album if it costs the same or only a few dollars more than a lossless digital download.

Thanks for your opinion, but I find it hard to justify the cost of a subscription model.

An evening with Philip Glass…. Ahwww, just an evening?!

    • but you'll get the full Glass experience.. not a half Glassed attempt!

    • If he started spouting endless philosophical & celestial poetry you may be glad it is only an evening.

Disclaimer: I have never met Philip Glass and any perception of his character should be reserved for your own personal encounter.

    Thanks OP.

Some of these CDs, although "just released", are actually just re-releases of old cds.

Quite a few of them (e.g. Billy Joel, Toto, Noiseworks, Mi-Sex) are also available for free (and legal) download on Freegal. Most Australian public libraries subscribe to Freegal, so essentially your library pays for your downloads. Check with your local library for details.

My local library allows three downloads per week per library card. Files are MP3 format, most are 256kbps.

    • Thanks for the info. I will let my cousin know of Freegal. He is frequents the library so he will be pleased.

  • +1

they are all 2x CD albums.

OP, not all of them have 2 CDs. "The Essential Noiseworks" and "The Essential Mi-Sex" are only one CD, there may be others.

    • +1

All the ones I checked and looked at were 2 CD, I’m sure it’s only a few with 1x. Added to the notes in description anyway.

Mi-Sex were vastly under-rated.. top songs - Blue Day, You Don't Care, People, Castaway and Computer Games.. awesome

      • I love Blue Day, it's so unlike their other songs. Don't forget "Down The Line" and "Only Thinking". I once heard a radio DJ mix a large number of Mi-Sex songs together, making a compilation about 30 minutes long. I wish I had recorded it, it was fantastic.

  • @Dne “in this here thread of yours” may be where you expect the kind confirmation and/or your link, or since you wrote “before” it is possible your message has already been conveyed.

  • You can test out the gravelly lower register in that voice of yours, with this Philip Glass piece, margejsimpson…

    Closing scene of Koyaanisqatsi

I own relatively few soundtrack albums, but that's one of them.

    Full soundtrack
You can read this, as you listen to that.

All audio there better on CD.

The beautiful break in Sarah McLachlan's voice, best heard in this track
Live session version Girl can sing.

I believe that OzBargainer bluesky, may well be very well-versed on topic of Toto and maybe even Boz Skaggs. If sees this comment, she may well link a few favourites for you. You never know your luck! :)

    • Thanks for sharing.
Regarding favourites and recommendations, I prefer the path of self-discovery.
Regarding Toto & Boz Scaggs I am just aware of them and the number of albums owned is zero.
In the past, I listened to some tracks from the same album containing “I won’t hold you back” and I had to pass on it.
My understanding is that “I won’t hold you back” was quite different in sound from the rest of the album, therefore I was thrown off a bit. Time is a good friend, and in the future I may listen to the album again with a different perspective.
Regarding Sarah McLachlan’s voice, ‘Fallen’ did make it onto my playlist of ‘good songs and masters’.
I think her voice is great, but it is delicate on the edges and the more congested instrumentals (typically on her more main-stream ‘poppy’ songs) drown out the character of her voice and the delicate intricacies are lost.
I do prefer her well mastered acoustic or piano backed songs, but as is the case with fallen, if the recording and mastering is all there her voice can still shine through.

      • Your path of self-discovery does pretty usefully take the heat off bluesky. All good, mjs.

Excuse me if don't reply to any continued.. in other thread.
        OzBargain lacks a slogan..
'Where intended 20 minutes turns into 2 hours', might be as good as any! :)

        • Just thought I would update you after listening to Essential Sarah McLachlan a few times now.
First off, the horrid yellow ‘Gold edition’ sticker, that had to come off with complimentary pine-o-clean removal of the residual glue. The gold tint to the shiny side of the CD was a nice touch, and made up for the sticker.
I analysed the album files on the PC, to give it a preliminary sample. Just a few tracks had some brick-walling with the necessary filter applied, after sampling these few, some were likely omitted from the playlist also due to being too ‘poppy’.
Thankfully every track on the 2 CD’s is different, repeated identical tracks are just gap-fillers and are disappointing.

Regarding the Remastering, I would give the CD an overall grade of a B listening on speakers (main), B- on headphones. In my grading the jump between B to A is much bigger than C to B. I am quite easy going with masters, I will happily listen to a B- grade as long as the song is great. As expected, the remastered tracks are varied in their sound quality and a few recordings likely are at the limit of their ability to be improved.

I am particularly fond of her voice in ‘Ben’s Song’ and the studio track which goes “hold on, hold on to yourself, this is gonna hurt like hell’ (you can hear the piano pedal in this one which I am fine with, and mastering could be a bit better).
I also enjoyed the song you mentioned ‘Fallen’ among many others including full band backing to mostly just piano.
Some of the good full band instrumental tracks still get slightly congested, with the delicate character of Sarah’s voice being lost and the band just being slightly mushed together (thought about a specific time-stamped obvious example but this post is long enough), this is again I think a mixing issue rather than a mastering issue. To be more picky; there is some dual-mono going on in some tracks (obvious in one track with only her voice as an inverted centre-image for the first part, then becomes centre image for the rest of the song, I may be mistaken and this could have been a creative decision).
Just my early opinion on this Essential Gold Edition CD.
After previously only listening to ’Angel’, I am appreciating Sarah’s voice more now.
Note: I whittled this comment down best I could.

          • @thebadmachine:

Note: I whittled this comment down best I could.

I will assume that a valiant effort was made! :)

Try, try, not to let a complete obsession with the technicalities of audio, stand in way of the actual pure and simple enjoyment of music.
Some risk there in your case, just maybe.

Another soundtrack for you, because rediscovered. I forget if film itself, good. Might be, but music better.

Purchase of that soundtrack, led to purchase of.
It takes you on quite the journey.
Album is great. Other youtube uploads a bit ordinary for it, best audio for the title track there for you, from something of a search.

Wim known to sing a bit…
Try not to be startled, when that happens.. :)

Stay out of audio trouble and most in-depth reviews, and have an enjoyable listen to those.

Have a good and musical week, margejsimpson! :)

Try, try, not to let a complete obsession

I am obsessive by nature. But I understand what you mean.
I did mention the music does take the lead in the end. I am thankful that I can get lost in music in such a way.
An A+ recording / mastering is such a rare occurrence to begin with. So I would say I fully enjoy & appreciate my majority B grade collection.

I will get around to clicking your links tomorrow.

“Belly of an architect”. I will have to watch the film first (I am a cinema person also), and listen to the soundtrack afterwards.
The live Wim Mertens video has taken me on a musical journey on YouTube, which I occasionally do as well. I enjoy visiting YouTube signed out and seeing where the recommended videos take you.
              Thanks again.

              • @thebadmachine: Another performance of that piece, in case missed
Studio version, journey as mentioned and absent Wim singing, has the greater, exultant, conclusion.

Movie sees just 7/10 on IMDb. Could probably give it a miss in favour of something else.

Have fun and take care marge. :)
