City2Surf First Timer

First attempt at City2Surf this Sunday. From pictures I saw online, most people run empty handed, I'm thinking of carrying a light backpack with water bladder and to put other stuff in, is that a good idea?

I think it will be cold in the morning, so I need a jacket and somewhere to put it when it warms up.

  • Sydney?
You don't need the water bladder, there will be drink stations where you can get cups of water all the way round.
A light backpack or a bumbag is useful for items like car keys, travel cards, money etc.
You will definitely need a jacket or pullover. When you warm up, you can take it off, then hold both arms, twirl it around to roll it up on itself, and then fasten it around your waist, tying the arms in a knot. Some people just take an old garment and chuck it when they warm up, but if you stash it around your waist, you've got something for the end when you stop and start cooling down.
If you want to enjoy the event, start slow. Don't get carried away by the excitement of the start and burn yourself out in the first couple of kilometres. Good luck.

You can wear an old or very cheap jumper and then discard it before the race. Volunteers will usually collect them off the streets and donate them to charities.

Have done City 2 Surf many many times. I wear a Flyactive belt and put my credit card, key, comb, tissues in the belt. Phone is on an armband. I wear an old top and throw it out when the race starts. Believe me you will warm up after a few hundred metres. There are charities who go and collect the clothes. There are water stations along the route and every second one has both water and electrolyte type drinks. If it gets cold at the finish you can always buy a cheap t shirt in those $2 type shops. There was one year where it was really cold. Also wear a cap to stop glare. Public transport is included in the fee so no need to bring your Opal card. One less thing to carry with you. Good luck.

  • The bladder idea is ridiculous. The straps would chafe and you're going to be stuck with that for the remainder of the run.

I suggest not carrying anything. If you're driving, get one of those combination locks with with a compartment. Keep things in car and lock your keys somewhere not visible under your car.

    • Do you have any parking secrets, else you'd be running to the starting line and effectively doing the C2S twice?

      • Pub transport is free. Pub transport back.

… but we used to do the two car system.

        • two car system

          do tell

          • @ihbh: Have a friend that is also doing the run. Both drive to the end point. Friend parks at end point and you pick up your friend and drive to start point.

At the end of the run, hop in your friend's car and go to start point.

Also works great for non looped hiking/walking trails.

  • heaps of drink stations and pubs along the way

in some races (the Sydney Harbour Bridge race) they allow u to donate items at the start, so u can bring a pull over and take it off before u run to donate

  • Don't worry about a jacket,you'll warm up quickly.

  • Thanks all, I don’t know that’s why I asked :D

Also bought this from local Miniso, $5 (cheaper than website)
