TV Does Not Scan Any FTA Channels - Advice Required

Recently moved to new built apartment. I tried to scan the TV for the free air channels but no channels were found!

I scanned using both methods: antenna and cable = still nothing came out.

I asked the building manager if there's any issue with the socket, and he was useless saying the issue is my TV (TV was working fine and still 1 year old)

No issue with my TV cable obviously because I used it in previous place and was working fine. I have not registered for my NBN for my unit though, does this cause the issue (the fact I don't have any active internet yet)?

Any advice/tips/tricks for the noob here?? TIA

UPDATE: The building manager decided to come to my unit and have a look (which i had to rush back home during lunch time grrr!), he tried scanning himself (he was being a smart butt by saying the cable is loosen up that's why I didn't get anything, of course its loosen because I loosen it up after trying many times yesterday -,-)

He finally gave up and admitted there must be some issues with the socket and will arrange electrician to come in.

Wish he could have just done this from beginning…but i guess better than nothing!

Anyway, TV is now working. No specific reason given to me, they just mentioned please try again now it's now working…OK…

Thanks all!

Is the scanning set to scan for DIGITAL channels, as opposed to ANALOGUE channels?

    • Thanks, I don't remember it's asking me to scan whether DIGITAL or ANALOGUE channels. It just asked me whether I want to scan antenna/cable..I will check it later

What did the manual say when you checked it?

    • Er…Obviously I followed the procedures as per the manual in first place? I scanned in previous place and it worked.

Are you using the correct socket? Can you take photos of the sockets you think are TV and NBN for us?

    • Not currently at home but herethis is the same type of socket I'm using

I dont think there's NBN socket next to it, it's just an Ethernet socket to connect to the internet.

        Link is dead.

If it’s a new apartment it’s definitely possible the socket was never activated…

Send a message around to your mates asking if anyone has a small tv you can borrow.

Worst case get on gumtree and buy one for $50, then sell it again.

Also see if you can grab a long antenna cord would save you lifting the tv.

          • @Taro Milk Tea: Good work! You can now donate big screen TVs to everyone that assisted in this thread :D

            • @bdl: HAHA! I don't know there's such thing as TV Donation? :p

F connector. The centre pin on the cable should be bare copper, check it's still there, hasn't bent/snapped off and sticks out as far as the end of the screw fitting.

These connectors are also used for Foxtel which obviously won't give you FTA, though I think there are usually two together.

If it's a new building, quite likely it's either a cable fault or there isn't an antenna installed at the other end.

(Also, depends what NBN connection you have to the building, but it's likely you'll just have an ethernet port to connect your router. Not having internet won't affect the ability to pickup FTA broadcasts though.)

  • Building Manager might be right - I used an 8 year old LG TV and got perfect signal compared to a 4 year old Samsung which got pretty much nothing.

Best thing to do might be to try in another socket if available or use another tv in the same socket if available.

      Really?So weird..

There's another socket in the bedroom but I can't lift the TV myself (75"!!!!), will try to get a mate to help and test it. Thanks

      • Get an antenna extension cord to run between the bedroom socket and your 75 inch TV, will save your back :)

Since it's a new build, there's a possibility that the socket may not be hooked up correctly. The builder can get the electrician to test, there's a signal meter/oscilloscope which can be plugged into each socket to make sure there is sufficient signal. You may have to speak to agent/builder/strata/bodycorp to determine who is to pay for that.

From the way it looks, it seems that they wanted to pass the charges back to me!

          • @Taro Milk Tea: At least if you get your TV working on the bedroom socket and not the other other, you know it's not your TV

      • As per bdl just get an extension or buy a really long one from reject shop/$2 shop to test, no point moving that TV around.

My Samsung is a 65inch, I just left it there and carried the LG over since it is a 32inch.

        Hope your 75inch isn't a Samsung!

Unfortunately you might need a friend with a small TV to diagnose it. I have a small portable TV that I would check it with or Playstation TV tuner or borrow a friend's set top box connected to your TV via HDMI that you know works. Some apartment blocks have CCTV on a channel that you might pick up if connected.

    • Thanks for the tips!

    • Another option is a USB TV tuner card in a laptop

  • OP has resolved the issue and this thread will now be closed.
