NBN Port Problem - Help Please

Help Please

My daughter in another state has just moved house. In her old house she had Aussie Broadband as an ISP.

In the new house, she rang up Aussie Broadband and changed the address of service. When she went to connect it, it did not work.

She rung Aussie Broadband and was told that she needs to connect her modem to port 2, but her house only has a port 1 connection.

Apparantly Aussie Broadband only works on Port 2.

The NBN box (that port 1 sticks out of) is plastered into the wall and the only thing visible is this port 1.

Does anyone know what she can do to access port 2.

The house has no phone ports anywhere.

I had never heard of this before.

Does anyone have any idea what she can do to get NBN connected?

Thanks

  • My house apparently has 3 ports. Just because the are wired to the house doesnt mean they are fitted at the wall, if ozbb are not workin go do good old telstra for afew months lol.

  • Sounds like AussieBB think the house is FTTP.

    • Yes you are right, house is FTTP, just checked it up on nbnco.

FTTP boxes used to look like this.

    https://apcoms.com.au/nbn-fttp-connection-box-status-lights/
    or maybe
    https://www.letsbemates.com.au/setup-guides/nbn-fibre-premis…

Those have 4 ports, ethernet connectors.

Some hide the connectors but they are there (also known as uni-d ports)

All you do is connect the ethernet cable to the second plug.

Anyway see what hers looks like if you cant work it out link to a picture or look at the internet (search fttp nbn box) and see if you can see a similar NBN box inside that she has (dont get confused with outside termination box)

    • Thanks for you help. The problem is that there is only one plug and it is in the wall. The FTTP box you are talking about is in the wall behind plaster, so only one port is accessible.

      • Are really sure. To me that sounds more like you have an ethernet/cat port plug in the wall, and the box is in another room/garage or in the roof, having the whole unit hidden behind drywall plaster is definitely rather odd, as how can you do any trouble shooting if the internet goes down. All ISP tech support will ask for the details of the lights on the NBN box when this is needed.

        like this?

        https://www.bunnings.com.au/deta-cat-6-single-ethernet-rj45-…

In the early days many of the contractors installing the NBN were on set price installs so they shoved the box in the easiest place. Home owners would then install a Cat6 plug like the one in the link to move the connection point further into the house where they connected their modem/router/wireless set up. This sounds more like what you have.

So do some searching for the NBN box, start with room closest to the outside box. Look in Cupboards and look on top shelf/bottom shelf as it may be hidden from first glances

If you find that all you will need to do is switch the CAT6 connector which goes into the NBN box from the Uni-D port1 to port 2.

It is in another state, so I can't look myself. My daughter said she has looked everywhere and can't find it. She is going to contact the real estate today so they can contact the landlord, hopefully they know where it is.

          Thanks for you help.
