Suspect power useage in a flat - QLD

Hey

I've had larger power bills than I thought I should for some time, and today when I got home I checked the meter. I'd not left much on while at work but the meter was going nuts!

I turned off every switch in my flat and then turned my safety off and it's still going at roughly the same rate. Faster than any other unit's meter. Should my hot water system be connected to my safety? The house electricals are old, and I've got unlabeled fuses for all the 7 units on a board above the safety switches for each unit.

      chur

  • how much was this power bill exactly

    • $230-300 for a quarter, for just myself. No A/C, I don't use a header much. Quite power conscious - I've got my PC on a switched power board so it's off. Turn the TV off at the wall rather than leave it on standby (gets the amp and shit too this way). Gas stove and oven.

    • LOL. I was looking for this.

First thing I thought of when I read the OPs post.

  • Is someone tapping a feed off your power board to grow some tomato plants in their spare room next door. If most of your things are off its odd. Have you bought a new fridge? Something else that's left on. By comparison though what are you bill usuage from before to now.

    • Bills have honestly been higher than I expected for years. The last 5 quarterly bills going backwards were 230, 230, 280, 315, 195. Fridge isn't new and I caught the meter going nuts when I just got home. So I turned every switch off, including the fridge and others which aren't used, and then the safety and it was still going hard. Was more interested in if anyone knew if the hot water needs to go through the safety. Because it's either that or wiring.

  • This literally happened to us, turns out there was a hydro lab in one of the garages down stairs.
