Help with First Computer Build and Advice

Hey Fellow Ozbargainers!,

I am looking forward to building my first PC and would love your opinions, advice and feedback. This "rig" will be used for mainly work, some casual gaming (CS-GO) and a bit of photoshop. My budget is up to $1750 (can be a little bit over). And am hoping to get the parts on sale, maybe Black Friday.

CPU*: Ryzen 7 2700X
Motherboard: Asus Prime X470-Pro ATX AM4 Motherboard
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive (Had one lying around)
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB AORUS XTREME Video Card
PSU: Silverstone Strider Platinum 550 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (Is this sufficient?)
Case: NZXT H500i (Not sure what case to get, but this seems pretty good.)

*Just wondering if the stock cooler would be enough if I am not overclocking or pushing the system too much.

Thanks!
perhaps

Looks fine for your use case,

I guess if you wanted to save some coin you get a 10xx series card

This is for CS-GO? I play that a lot and built my pc for like $150 with a bunch of parts from 2012
Before that I played on a Macbook Pro with integrated graphics

You should be able to run it

Yeah (not just CS-GO but not really high demand games), but I would like a powerful system too that will hold up for a while.

Swap the 2700x for 3600x, about the same price.

    • Cheers! Hopefully I can get it cheaper on sale during Black Friday or an ebay sale.

Actually I will point out one thing, the 3600x will be faster in gaming, whereas the 2700x will be faster in productivity (at least the programs that make use of multiple cores). They are about the same price, so work out which one you think you will use more often.

If the games are all older of non-demanding games, go the 2700x.

  • stock cooler does the job, wouldn't be bundled with the cpu if it weren't the case. Personally I am doing a similar build with the 2700x and 2060 for video editing/3d animation. The 3600x has slightly better single core performance but for the same price I'd rather go with the 2700x for the extra cores and better multi-core performance. Plus the fan looks cooler :)

    • Nice, please let me know how the build goes. Keen to hear!

I recommend using PC Part Picker, it's awesome. Here's your build, currently priced at $1684, unsure about postage though.

You could probably spend $500 less and still have a great build for what you require. As an example if you spend $300 more you will have a brand new, mid-high end build.

The RAM, PSU and case are yet to be confirmed as my research hasn't got that far yet haha.

But I think you could easily go down for the same quality build, or up for a newer, better performing build.

Also use r/buildapc, r/buildmeapc are some great resources. There are people on there that know a lot more than me and would be able to help you out too.

    Hope this helps.

    • Thank you very much for your response AquaDigger! And thanks for the suggestions. I may consider a $2000 build but id like to keep it to $1700ish. Do you think I could do a bit of a mix and match eg. opting for a 3700X or change it up depending on prices.

No problems, sorry for the delayed reply. You can spend $1700ish, but the system will definitely be overkill for what you need it for. It's up to you, but if you don't want to spend $2000 then I would seriously consider saving $300-400 and spending it on something else, better peripherals, headphones etc.

You can definitely mix and match your components, but you won't see any real advantage in going from a 2700x to a 3700x (I think). If you were going to change CPU's then go for the 2600.

        • I know that the system is a bit overkill, but I like to know that it will be powerful to handle the next versions of chrome :) haha! But yeah I would like the system to last and be compatible with software and stuff for at least 3 years or more. I don't think I will be able to really utilise the extra power or performance of upgrading to the 3700x so will probably stick with the 2700x.

I think you're better off getting these and change some parts to your liking.

    • Thought about it, but I'd like to build my own. Its pretty good to know that you've done it yourself.

You'll get more out of the new radeon 5700 for around the same price point, and look at taking the CPU up to the 3600x instead, otherwise looks good!

    • Something like this? (https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/mCJmP6/gigabyte-radeon-r…) A bit unsure about getting a brand new release card as it may have some issues/bugs and not many reviews. But I will surely check it out!

      • Yeah the brand custom models are coming out for it this month which will be worth keeping an eye on, good point on the wait and see though!

    1. Your build is way overkill for what you want to do, but its your money :) so have fun.

    2. Look into static electricity when building a pc, lots of info out there, one of the better ways involves a wrist strap grounded to a psu that is plugged in with the switch on the back turned off.

    Make sure its turned off.

    1. The case will be expensive to ship, either pick it up locally or shop around, bought mine while kogan had free shipping.
      1. Haha yea.
      2. Will surely look into a static electricity strap. It is very important as you dont want to fry your brand new system.

      1. What case would you recommend that is cheaper?. And I think maybe certain stores may have free shipping.
      • +1

Lol at one point i used a case i bought from the opshop for $1 😂 as long as it fits the parts nd you dont care about astetics any will work. For a cheap Chinese one local pc shop should be $40 or under, just replace psu.

Or find free shipping as we both mentioned.

Static usually wont wreck the card, itll cause minor things that you may or may not notice.

      • Static electricity more often causes overstress. The damage does not cause immediate failure. Overstress means the damage slow gets worse over months to cause a complete failure later. Then most use speculation to blame something else.

Wrist strap is a reliable solution. Other solutions include keeping room humidity at above 40% during construction.

Damage occurs because a charge in the body connects to charges beneath shoes. If that connection goes through computer parts (ie via any wire or table top) then a discharge may go through semiconductors - harmfully.
