Call from bank??

Just got a mobile call from supposedly NAB. They asked me questions like how my banking is going, what I am studying at uni etc. I answered the questions. Now I have suspicion if it was really them??

Why are they asking me where and what I study etc? They ended the call saying 'it sounds like your all set with your banking' and thanks for your time.

In hindsight I should have hung up as soon as I got called, dont even know why I agreed to chat for a bit..

Didnt give any bank details or anything though of course..

am I safe??

  • Probably depends how much info you gave and how active and private you are on Social Networks.
I don't think your money is a problem, but your identity may be!

  • Yeah well all I really told them was the uni and course i was doing. one question I made up some bullshit.

also I heard music on the background..

kinda dodgy. I didnt really give anything important though. but they knew my name, and mobile number..

    hmmm

I hope it wasn't some scammer that got my details from all the freebies and competitions that I enter

Have you given your phone details to NAB in any promotion, like an O-week stand, online NAB competition, etc?

  • Nope I haven't. The only time I gave my mobile would have been in December when I signed up with that $50 free offer.

Actually, I entered for the free volleys and headphones on NAB student collective. Cant remember if that asked for mobile..

  • i only get called when they want to sell me insurance or credit card. which i always say no. and they go away!

  • I got a call from Optus trying to sell me crap today as well. i hung up on them.

I am actually really worried about this NAB call, they werent specifically interested in my banking but more like what I am studying, if i was at work/home, if i had bank accounts with any other banks…

      hurrah!!

Sounds like NAB have have your mobile on their database, whether it was from December or the NAB Student Collective promotions. Given they were asking re: uni, it may have been from the NAB Student Collective promotion?

Call NAB and ask if they are doing this….

Without knowing the full details of the deal they offered, is it possible you indicated you were approaching the end of being a student, so they were calling to see how you were, how your studies went, and then when you say you've graduated, they convert your account from "student" to "fee-paying"? About 10 years ago, I had a "student" account with NAB and then one day mentioned to them that I was working full-time as part of a home-loan application. They put two and two together and realised that I must have stopped being a student and I should have been converted to "fee-paying" account status a few years earlier.

Or else it was your mother pretending to be NAB to make sure you were being a good child and still studying hard…

    • Except NAB transaction accounts are now fee-free anyway.

      • Okay then, well times have changed in the past decade since I left NAB. I guess it must have been nubzy's mum.

  • haha definately not my mum..

they had a new zealand accent.

Its really weird but im not going to worry about it too much anymore.

    • Oh no, she had a Kiwi accent? What a terrible way to find out you're adopted! :-D
