ALDI National Geographic 76/700 EQ Newtonian Reflector Telescope

Hi guys,

I've been dating this telescope for a very long time. Aldi will be selling it again this Saturday, and with great reviews on YouTube I am willing to buy one this time.
Is there anyone here who bought one and have some experiences to share??
I've watched a lot and love everything about astronomy. This telescope seems to be the right choice for beginners.

Thanks a lot

Congratulations! Pay no mind to the naysayers, the heart wants what it wants xx

I know you're starting out, but dont expect anything spectacular from a $100 telescope. As its ALDI its worth a punt as you can always return it if you're not happy. I have a SAXON 70/700 and it can be hard to focus well, but I've taken it out where there's little light pollution and got some real nice views of craters on the moon etc.

Thanks for replying. Well, I am really not expecting miracles and I am aware of the pain in the a** it is to get it aligned and etc.
You know, to get used to play with these things, so you can buy a better one in the future when I know how to manage it properly.
If I am not wrong, every year somewhere in Blue Mountains, astronomers from all around the world come to a conference where the conversation is outside with everyone looking at the sky. I would like to know well to be able to go one year :)

This telescope will give you excellent views of the craters on the moon. Mars will be a tiny pink dot at the best of times. You'll see a monochrome view of Jupiter with two bands across it, and the 4 major moons. Saturn's rings will be visible. It's good enough to clearly see the phases on Venus. Those are probably the viewing highlights. Ignore all the photos on the box: they are completely impossible with a telescope like this.

    • Thanks for that. I will grab one :)

Is this good for distances of 50m or so? How does it perform when looking through, say, a panel of glass.

Also, is this a one hand operation?

    Asking for a friend.

Highly suitable, would recommend. However the image will be upside down, leading to much… strain.

I bought what looks like the same one from Aldi 5 or more years ago for about $70

Lots of bits were chromed plastic instead of metal and the general build quality didn’t feel great. A little tricky to track and focus and the instructions weren’t great.

BUT we set it up, it worked, saw craters on the moon, rings of Saturn, moons of Jupiter. I left it outside on the deck in the rain for a couple years and it got occasional use (good conversation piece to make you look very intellectual). Some of the main components for accurate tracking and adjusting broke but it still essentially worked.

Put it out on hard rubbish recently and some guy took it - the aluminium tripod was as good as new and he wanted that

    No regrets. Buy!

    • Thanks for that. I will grab one :)

    Hi,

Purchased this yesterday from Aldi. Its a whole lot of telescope for the dollars and I am extremely satisfied with it. Its sturdy, well built. I have had several telescopes over the years as we are a household who like to get it out on a clear sydney night and look around.

If you are located in Sydney, there is a guy that is offering the same telescope in the suburb of Zetland for $25 as @ 4.8.19 on Gumtree

    • I purchased it as well lol

I am quite impressed with the quality of that telescope. I was able to calibrate it without problems while I saw so many people complaining that it is a pain in the ass. It was easy. Even at night I was able to see a clear and well defined Westfield tower in the city from Mascot lol

Unfortunately, last night the sky wasn't great to look at the sky :(

I didn't remember that the images were going to be upside down lol I thought it was broken or I did something stupid.

It was cool to learn a lot of things about the telescope, how to operate it, etc. I might not be able to see that much more than the moon coz there are a lot of artificial pollution from my balcony.

Other than that. I am really enjoying it :)
