Xiaomi Phones

Looking to get out of the Iphone world, as much as I enjoy the ecosystem it just doesn't do it for me (nor the pricing anymore)
Was considering an Oppo about a year ago but now I've gotten wind of the Xiaomi branded phones.

Only problem is there is so many different models I dont even know where to start
Im looking at comparing models released equivalent to an Iphone 8 tech and better

any exports on here that can break this all down for me?
Thanks!

I recently bought the global version of the mi 9 se.

    Love it.

    Works fast and perfectly.

    Great camera. NFC.

Can't say anything bad about it.

    • How is the battery life?

I'm still using a nexus 6p looking through upgrade to the 9 se but the battery capacity is smaller than what I currently have.

      • My usage leaves the battery at 60-70% at the end of the day (light user). No games, some videos, maybe 10 calls and 3 hours screen time.

  • Basically Xiaomi has a few sub brands..

    Mi series - flagship
    Mix - flagship/fullscreen innovative
    Redmi - budget
    Redmi Note - budget/midrange

I use https://ozmiui.com/device-specifications/ to compare devices and view specs.

    Otherwise, check out mi.com too.

Don't forget Max series! Biggest screen and affordable.

      • But now extinct! :(

        • Oh? They stopped making this model ??

          • @letmethefuqin: They didn't focus much into the Max series considering how well their Mi and Redmi series are going, along with their Android-One phones (A1, A2 and the recently announced A3).

    • That website is great for comparing specs!
Pretty much cuts it down to all the phones on that front page would be where I should start comparing
      Thanks

  • They have great hardware, but the apps needs more work.

  • I have a Redmi Note 3 and it's OK hardware but the software drives me nuts as the "Mi" wants to take over.

My kids both have Redmi 4 Pro that I bought them

The one that came from a google phone loves it.

The one that came from an iPhone hates it so much she bought an iPhone 8 out of her own money (she's a student).

    • I was doing some reading about the OS
and apparently the new version that is in the 9T is better and also if you flash it with the .eu version you get no ads or something ?

I guess the question is, can you put any OS on any phone ? 🤔

      • It's more than just ads. I'm pretty much welded on to Google apps.
Mi won't let me delete their version of Play Store, Play movies, Music, Share Mi, their browser, Mi Video, etc plus it constantly wants you to join their message service and storage service.

It's a few years old now so i will live with it until it dies.

I really love the dual Sim though. I couldn't go back to carrying a work phone & a personal one.

  • Price, Screen size, dual sim. That usually cuts the list down to a few

    Some food for thought.
I buy from the Xiaomi Redmi line, currently on the note 7 pro.
If you time them well and get to know sales cycles you can get massive savings on them quite easily.
The main benefit I find with them isn't so much that that are cheaper than iPhone etc, its that I can happily damage and replace them without going over budget. This has led to a surprisingly noticeable decrease in stress of worrying about cracking, scratching, loosing my phone. I'm still careful with it, but it's not something I have in the back of my mind like I use to. Also means I can replace the phone for the same cost as big brands charge for a screen replacement, so I never have a shattered screen anymore.

On top of that, I'm in a fairly high income work place so everyone seems to have the latest of each brand and love to poke fun at my "Ching-mi" phone, that is until we run comparisons side by side. So far, only the Iphone X has had a better camera, and to be honest its only verrrry marginal (slightly better resolution at max zoom and mildly nicer 'colours' to it overall), certainly not $1500 better than the redmi camera in my mind.

And that’s where I am at,
I’m normally quite careful with my phones and have been lucky not to have cracked one

That being said all my damages have come from falling into creeks or dropping my phone in them as I do some hiking.

I agree, my iPhone has gotten boring and majority of the features I don’t even use, hence why I would like to go for something half the price now
      Thanks for your feedback :)

      • I bought a gorilla glass screen protector & a case for mine off AliExpress and the phone looks like new still (screen protector is trashed now). $10 well spent.

        • Yeah plus one to this. I do a bit of out doors stuff and having gorilla glass on has done a great job. Plus it's only 10 bucks replacement for what would often be a screen crack.
On top of that, I got a slip on case that has 'airbags' on the corners. It's very low profile except the corners and seems very useful. Since it's all rubber and slips on and off easily it's great for when I'm at doing outdoorsy stuff or rougher stuff at work.

  • I bought a Redmi note 5 last year, broke the screen recently and replaced the screen myself for $30. Was easy to do.
I decided to upgrade to a mi 9t a week ago and it's a fantastic device, feels premium in the hand and has fantastic specs. What I like best is the value for money that the Xiaomi line of phones offer over rivals like Samsung and apple. Thoroughly impressed with Xiaomi overall but have heard good things about other brands as well such as oppo, realms, ZTE, meizu.

    • Hey, any tips on replacing it? I used to have one and broke the screen. Tried and failed to replace it despite being able to do it on all previous phones. I just want my old data of it haha

There are some dissambly videos on YouTube that you can follow. If you want to have an easier time replacing the screen, just buy the "LCD and frame". It is easier to transfer your motherboard, battery, speakers across to a new frame than to remove the LCD and glue a new one on. A new LCD and frame will set you back about $30 on Aliexpress. I have noticed that third party displays aren't nearly as bright as the original display.

  • Redmi note 6 pro here, my wife also has one. Great value for money phones. Might look at a Mix or 7 pro / 8 pro when the time comes, but I'm thoroughly enjoying having a decent phone for under 300 bucks, cannot imagine spending much more than that for a phone that does the job.

If you do buy a redmi note 6 pro the charger I got was not quick charge but will work with quickcharge if you have the charger / pack for it.

  • What about B28 - How important is this?
For the record Im with Telstra because Optus became patchy where i live (Cairns)

    • I was asking the same question recently. Downloaded Aus phone towers app. Tells you what band you are on. Check it where you use phone most - home, work, etc. If it is never on band 28 then most of the time it won't make a difference
