Linksys WRT54GL

Are these on sale anywhere?

  • Gosh - I have one myself, awesome device! Pretty old, old blue style enclosure.

Make sure you get the correct version if you are going for DD-WRT. Each range has a "sweet spot" and then generally goes downhill in specs in later releases.

    • Yep, I run two at the moment with DD-WRT and looking for one for my brother for a wireless bridge.

The WRT54GL are basically an updated v4 and support DD-WRT.

      They are unbelievably reliable!

  • yeah, these are really old, look for a newer alternative. Lifehacker actually did an article asking which router was the new king of the hill. Check it out (search WRT-54g and it should be easy to spot).

    Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH
    Asus RT-N16
    TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND
    are the three alternatives suggested…

    • Might have to try the Asus RT-N16 with DD-WRT if I can find a cheap WRT54GL.

      • I read a review of the RT-N16 on whirlpool and it said something like "This bad boy needs no introduction. If it had a display, it could probably play Quake."

    • the asus rt-n16 is a power house. it really depends on what purpose you have in mind for the router you want to buy.

  • I've got one I'm happy to sell if your deadset on this model and don't mind second hand. Version 7, works great, only retired cos my new Telstra modem has wireless built in.

    • Actually found your for sale post after a search but I want to run with DD-WRT and v7 isn't supported. :(

  • I can't believe people are trying to sell em' at $100 on ebay:

Seriously, even 5 years ago when it first came out the WRT54GL only retailed for around $75.

    • The law of supply and demand I guess. Just like people paying $Thousands for concert tickets that cost $150 from the official outlet.

    • They were more than that for the "good" versions (v2.2 to v4 and GL), only the later ones were at that $75 price range.

Just checked some old ebay sales records… 2 sales on 16/12/2007, both second hand but in original cartons.

      WRT54GL for $89 + $17.15 Registered Post.

      WRT54G v4.0 for $72 + $9.65 Registered Post.

Both were snapped up, those were very cheap prices at that time.

The GL had WRT-DD preinstalled, so that might have been why I got the higher price on that one.

      • GL's are on StaticIce new for about these prices or less!

        $69 here - http://www.lmc.com.au/products/Networking_-_Wireless/Linksys…

I reckon I bought my GL about 4 years ago for ~$60 from a bricks and mortar store in Adelaide.

        • IF ONLY we'd known… we could have got together and Broden'd for profit!

But seriously, there was a really good market back then for DD-WRT preinstallation because people were scared of bricking. I sold about 10-15 around that time, but had trouble finding new stock cheap enough to make it worthwhile (hence reselling used ones).

I seem to remember I paid about $35-40 for them at auction… but that was only from sellers who didn't realise what they were (didn't specify the product code)

    • Umart here in Brisbane has the WRT54GL in stock at $86..

      They're such workhorses!
