Do Bunnings Cut Timber/Plywood for Easy Transport?

I'm a newbie to wood working. Would like to try some DIY tasks. Have only basic sedan to carry stuff.

Do they cut wood freely?, need to pay some price for cutting ?

I'm looking to make some shelves, garage shelves and closet setup..etc.

Appreciate your suggestions guys thanks a lot.

They do cut wood to length. Its in the trade section. I believe the first one or two cuts are free, and its 50c per cut thereafter.

Alternatively, if you're not worried about waste you can just cut it yourself with a handsaw. Seen people do it on multiple occasions.
Alternatively(2), if you have a towbar, bunnings will lend you a trailer to transport your goods home.

They do cut it for a fee.

    • Can you get it cut at angles? If they mess it up even slightly will they give you a refund?

Unlikely depends on the staff member.
Sounds like you want a cabinetmaker, or a joinery supply store that cuts to size.

        • agree, definitely a 'timber supplies' store needed
          .

      • I buy pieces here or there but have only done straight cuts and they have a sign stating that they have tolerances of +/- 1cm

      • None of the Bunning stores I've ever been to can cut angles as their equipment isn't set up to do it.

Even their straight cuts, depending on the operator and how old and worn their saw is, aren't 100% accurate.

      • You can have any angle you like as long as it's 90deg. Note some stores will refuse to cut some products. eg some won't cut MDF due to health concerns. Some won't cut anything with a laminate finish due to chipping leaving a potential sharp edge etc

  • Double check if they can do panels before you buy plywood as I only remember a cutoff saw at my local Bunnings.

I often get bunnings to cut all my pieces as I would need them for the project. They say 1cm accuracy but if you find a nice cutting person you can chat with them and get it done right, measuring and confirming on fly. It beats cutting and tidying up at home; I take good (potentially usable) offcuts with me, leave the rest there; it's so much less messy.

  • Soft effort i fit 2.4m planks in my partners rolla hatch lol.

I’ve had various results at bunnings. Sometimes on the cutting station is a carpenter god and will cut your lengths with mm accuracy and precision exactly as you ask. Other times you get the rookie who only knows how to operate the machinery and gets them all wrong.

    • Same experience here.
One week, got a 'surly kid' who barely said a word but he was proficient and cuts were within mm of target.
Next week, mature bloke who didn't seem to know the ropes and after he botched a couple I gave up and borrowed their trailer to take the full lengths home and cut there.

Yep, Bunnings usually (every Bunnings I’ve been to has had them) have a vertical panel saw, which can rip, as well as cross cut, as well as a stand-alone cross cut saw to cut planks etc to length.

The last time I went and had some sheets cut they were dead on balls, and I’ve usually found them to be reasonably accurate.

Just be friendly and appreciative to staff and you shouldn’t have a problem. I remember waiting at the trade desk one day and this woman was loudly maligning the trade staff because they wouldn’t rip a length of trellis for her, rightly so hesitating because it’s full of nails, but she wouldn’t have it and continued to berate them. :/

  • You pay per cut sometimes te price differs depending on the material. I’d suggest going at quieter times if you need several and/or complex cuts - avoid opening until 10am - tradies, 4/5pm again tradies getting materials for the next day or before close. Try to avoid the weekends if possible.

Take a photo of the tag of the materials you have having cut so it’s easy for staff to ring up your total.

  • I had Bunnings cut to size about 100 lengths of merbau decking. Cut to three different lengths, and they were spot on to the mm. No charge. Saved a lot of mucking around at home, plus they fit easily into my trailer.

As for angle cuts, I’d be happy to let them do it if the timber was to be used outdoors. For indoor use where you can’t hide a bad join with wood filler, maybe have a chat to the Bunnings saw guy before deciding.

Also remember that if you are not experienced working with timber, doing your own angle cutting, including with a mitre box, won’t always give you the results you expect.

Depends when you go. I've had wood cut there for free several times - mostly mdf skirting boards. All straight cuts.

About 30% of the time someone cut it for me with "no guarantee on accuracy", but was pretty good each time. Probably better than my measuring anyway.

The rest of the times I had to cut it myself with a handsaw because they didn't have enough staff on "I can't leave the desk/roller door"…
At least they provided the handsaw I suppose.

  • If only they had a number to call

  • Last time I checked Bunnings had stopped cutting anthing to size.

  • got some planks cut a few months back in Kingsgrove NSW bunnings, was $1/cut if i recall correctly
