Selling Phones Just before New Versions Are Announced

Back in the day when i was using iPhones I would always start selling my existing one around August, right before the new announcements from Apple in September. Now I've switched to android and it's getting harder as the cycles are shorter, and with so many vendors it's difficult to find the right timing to sell as the next big thing could be 3 months down the line after you bought the newest one! Anyone else do the same ?

  • What do you do between the time it takes for the new one to be announced and released?
I did it and used a cheap phone in the a few between, it was less functional that I expected. but I did get more from the sale.

  • With Apple, it's easier because you don't have the burden of choice.
You're going from an iPhone 6/6+ all the way to a Xr/Xmas, and paying for the amount of storage you need.

On the Android side, you have to compromise. Do you want:
    - Good software updates?
    - IP67-69 protection?
    - a Headphone Jack?
    - a microSD slot?
    - a large battery?
    - an OLED display?
    - OIS on camera?
    - a Metal backplate?
    - curved front glass?
    - front-firing stereo loudspeakers?
    - HDMI-out from the USB-C ?
    - Unlocked bootloader/community?
    - Fast Charging/Wireless Charging/NFC/FM Radio/IrDa ?
    - Pocketability or oversized/purse ?
    - Available accessories/support?

Back in 2014, you didn't have to compromise as you paid more and more money for the Flagship/Luxury phones.
Now you do. Examples: Samsung Note4-Exynos, LG V20, ZTE Axon7… versus Samsung S10+, Sony One, OnePlus 7 Pro.

Once you figure that out, that's the hard part, the next part is whittling it down to two choices and picking between the two and waiting for the best deals.
The timing isn't much of an issue, if you have a cheap backup phone in your drawer. But it does get tedious if updating phones too often, so I normally suggest it either yearly or even less frequent.

    • Here's how I would've upgraded, based on my preference for Unlocked Bootloader and Battery Life:

      2011 - $570 - 07/09/11 - Samsung SII-Exynos
      2012 - $550 - 23/11/12 - Samsung NOTE 2-Exynos
      2013 - $670 - 22/10/13 - Samsung NOTE 3-QSD
      2014 - $720 - 30/11/14 - Samsung NOTE 4-Exynos
      2015 - $680 - 07/06/15 - Samsung S6 Plus-Exynos
      2016 - $650 - 05/09/16 - Samsung S7 Edge-Exynos
      2017 - $620 - 11/06/18 - LG V30+
      2018 - $680 - 18/06/19 - Razer Phone 2
      2019 - $699 - 31/12/19 - OnePlus 7 Pro / ASUS RoG Phone 2
      2020 - $699 - 31/12/20 - ????

(obviously trying to keep prices reasonable at below $700, and not spending $1,600 like all the normies these days)

You knocked this nail in the head. I've got 2 pHones now, s10+ as the primary and oppo reno 10x zoom as the backup. And I'm still on the lookout as to what's the best big thing. Note 10? Had note 9 last year. Too much chopping and changing and I'm just tired of it all.

  • Just switch back to Apple, problem solved. Android phone appear to go through a horrific price decline after release.
