This is where a quick call to a travel agent could be worth the effort/
Much prefer to do it over directly with any airlines.. had past issues with travel agents (could just be me)
$1400 is expensive for SYD-LAX. I wouldn't pay more than $1000 return. Have a look at Virgin and American Airlines and compare. I'm seeing $1106 for Virgin/Delta for late March - early April, so you can do much better than $1400. If you're super cheap, have a look at Fiji Airways, you'll have a stopover in Nadi, but you can even get around $700 with them sometimes.
e.g. airNZ deal $959 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/271118
fiji airways flights sydney to LA from $896 in march .

notice the flight times - stop in Fiji.
a direct flight is usually 15 -16 hours
book that. cheap as. good airline. did Bris<—>LA with them last year.
Cheers for the info tho I'm looking for direct flights only.
I'm not sure why prices are so up, I guess it's close to Easter? In the past I've always been able to get around 800ish but that's bc it's Fall in the U.S
If anyone have feedback / suggestions whether I should wait for upcoming deals? Thanks.
from January 1, Fiji airlines have 2 brand new A350s, which have something like 60 more seats than there A332s. They fly daily SYD-LAX. The A350s fly everyday SYD-Fiji & 6 days a week they continue onto LAX & very short stop in Fiji, not even enough time to leave airport around 90 mins in transit lounge with cheap duty free booze. Unless you want to spend 10 hours in Fiji from 12 til 8pm, don't get the 6.15am flight, get the 2pm which is the new A350. The new A350 is much better aircraft than all the nonstops & Fiji airlines had a bidding system for upgrade from any economy fare to business class. We bid on Fiji to San Fran nonstop & got it. It cost us $860 each.
Fly qantas and pay the premium. You’ll likely be on the A380. I personally prefer the Dreamliner.
Sales can be had for a $1000 but you have to keep an eye out for them. I’ve usually be able to snag that leg (return) 6 weeks before departure for a sale price. Will just be on supply and demand for your respective period, unfortunately.
At $1,400, its still ok paying that for Qantas.
Air NZ would be my next go to (usually $100-$400 cheaper), but have to detour which is something you said you prefer not to do.
As a side, we have lost out by not booking early and have also paid $1,900 return on the same leg. Buyer beware.
what price have flights previously been from syd to LA?
