After Market wheels for Audi Q2 Quattro

Feeling decidedly non OzBargainer writing this but, I recently bought a new Audi through my business at the recent EOFY. I don't like the wheels that came on it but Audi wanted $6K+ for their optional wheels and I thought that was highway robbery. Audi I bought was a Q2 Quattro.

Without the whole question of whether or not I should have bought a new Audi and without the whole question of depreciation, new car vs used car etc etc, I've been thinking about buying some after market wheels. There seems to be a plethora of the things around and every one has a 'not to be repeated' once in a lifetime sale (that is about the same price as everyone else's sale).

Aside from style/looks I assume weight and strength are the features I am after (aside from diameter, offset, stud pattern etc). Does anybody have any advice on what I should be looking at? One option I had considered is to get the same size wheels that are currently on the car and reuse the tyres that came with the car, just have them moved onto the different wheels.

  • Aside from style/looks I assume weight and strength are the features I am after (aside from diameter, offset, stud pattern etc). Does anybody have any advice on what I should be looking at?

Yeah that's a purely subjective thing. It's like asking what colour you should paint your feature wall. Only you know what designs and colours you like.

One option I had considered is to get the same size wheels that are currently on the car and reuse the tyres that came with the car, just have them moved onto the different wheels.

That is obviously the cheapest option. Bigger diameter rims, with lower profile tyres will also affect the drive.

18 x 7.0 should be pretty easy to find

    • I have a pretty good idea about the style I am after but the limited info I've read suggests there are some that arent as strong or as durable as others. I'm not sure what to look for in that regard. Most of the brands seem to make the same kinds of styles so I'm sure I can find something I like if I knew the type/brand to look for.

  • Congrats on the new Audi! Bloody awesome cars. Just be nice if you could get performance parts for them more reasonably priced in Australia.

  • I don't know what it is with new cars currently but they all have, at least IMO, very ugly OEM wheels. The whole aluminium with black painted highlights look rubbish so good choice on deciding to go aftermarket.

Style and colour is personal choice so only thing I can offer is make sure you get a legal fitment and buy a reputable brand so you know they've not going to be a nightmare to balance and crack on the first pothole. Remember you'll likely need to have the TPMS sensors moved as well or buy additional sensors so ensure they can be fitted to the new wheels.

For $6k+, you'd expect forged monoblock but I bet Audi OEM is just cast.

      And freaking heavy.

I've had 5 sets of wheels on the Skoda. 3 sets have been off Audis and they just kept getting heavier and heavier. lightest wheel on it was the 16x6.5" steel spare which was only 14kg all up. Worst was Audi 18x7.5 S3 wheels that were 22kg.

      • Wow, 22kg for 18x7.5? On S3? I wouldn't think performance car use a wheel that heavy. My 17x7.5 Clio IV RS was ~10.4kg and I think it was heavy already.

Perhaps ask the fold at OzAudi forums?

    They are pretty helpful there.

That forum is sorted into rooms by series. The below is the Q series.

I go there for Q5 help.

    • Second this. OzAudi forums are very helpful.

What price range are you looking at for wheels? Cheap non branded ones are absolute rubbish, OEM wheels are generally quite good quality. If it were me, I would buy some OEM wheels in a style I liked off gumtree/eBay/etc.

  • I would get the same size rims so that the factory tyres can be moved onto the new rims, like you said. Not only that, but it'll also mean that speedo/odometer calibration won't be necessary.

The OEM rims are usually worth quite a bit if you can find the right buyer, but for some cars having the OEM wheels on the car would get a better resale value later. So you may or may not want to keep them.

Lastly, the look is up to personal taste, but since you've spent that much money on your car, I wouldn't cheap out on wheels/tyres. Cheap rims could make your car look really tacky (or at worst, make your car unsafe if you go too cheap!).

Not Audi rims unless they are something very special.

That's why I keep buying Audi rims for my Skoda - they are crazy cheap. I haven't paid more than $400 for a set of almost new, unmarked Audi rims and tyres in the past 9 years.

      • I haven't paid more than $400 for a set

Where do you get your wheels from? You can barely get the tyres alone for $400/set.

I must be looking in the wrong places! I've been looking at 19x9 and they are $1200 each from Audi.. I assuming that's the rims only too.

I've seen Audi OEM rims on Gumtree for at least $600 each (with whatever tyre they've got on then at the time).

        • gumtree and ebay.

2010 (Jan) Ebay: BBS 17x8 ET35 with 50% worn Khumo $420. Sold my OEM 16x6.5 with almost bald tyres for $200. The BBS were in Melbourne and a mate picked them up and another mate brought them to Sydney - it took months. They were great wheels - only 18kg with tyres.

2010 (Oct) Ebay: Audi OEM 16x7.5 ET45 (off an Audi A4) with 225/55r16 Michelin Primacy HP (worth $200+ each new). 5% wear (near new). $400. Wheel weight 20kg.
Sold the BBS for $350 as the Khumo were bald and I didn't like the excess offset (stuck out 10mm past the front guards). Drove 40km round trip to pick up. Had to buy hubcentric rings - $15; Skoda decals for wheel centre - $5

2014 (Jan) Gumtree: Audi 17x7.5 ET45 (ex-Audi A4) 225/50r17 Bridgestone RE050A 10% wear. $350 because one wheel had slight gutter rash. Wheel weight 23kg. Had to buy Skoda decals for wheel centres - $5. Drove 1km to pick up.
Sold 16x7.5 with near bald tyres for $200.

2015 (Jun) VW Forum: Audi 18x7.5 ET50 (ex Audi S3) 225/40r18 Bridgestone RE050A 10% wear. $400. Wheel weight 25kg. Skoda decals $5. Drove 20km to pick up. Bought Audi seats and alloy lower control arms for a bargain price.
Sold 17x7.5 with near bald tyres for $180.

          2019 (Jun) Gumtree: Skoda Octavia Mk3 17x7; 225/45r17 Dunlop something or other. 5% wear. $400. Wheel weight 20kg. Drove 2km to p/u.
Sold 18x7.5 with near bald tyres $250

You just have to keep your eyes open for a few months before you need tyres and know what will fit your car. Audi drivers always want to upgrade from the base tyre/rim package and think the old rims are worth a fortune but there are few buyers as all the other Audi owners want different rims too! I make my offer and am happy to walk away if they don't like it. People in apartment blocks are best as they don't have storage space.;-)

          • @brad1-8tsi: Wow! Such a long post! lol

Were all the changes on the same car?

I guess me looking for very particular rims doesnt really help the price. Ive been watching a particular set on Gumtree for the past month. Its dropped, but not enough yet!

People in apartment blocks are best as they don't have storage space.;-)

This is exactly me. (Sorry, I don't have any spare wheels to sell you right now! haha)

            • @bobbified: Same car.
Bought new July 2008. Have done 192k km.

Not a fan of the 18". Quite liking the latest set even though the rim is a bit narrow.

  • What size rim (including offset) do you have at the moment?

    What size tyre?

Do you want to maintain current ride quality? Or do you want a plusher or more sporty ride?

Do you want to change the stance at all? (eg: Do you want the rims to be closer to the edge of the mudguards? Do you want to fill the wheel wells more?

Are you happy to spend an hour cleaning each wheel or do you want something that takes 2 minutes? (cause those Audis produce brake dust from nowhere)

How much do you want to spend?

Do you expect to sell the old rims?

      • 18 inch rims
      • 215 50 R18
      • Yes current ride is good, dont want to go smaller or larger.
      • Happy with current size, need to leave some space in case I need to fit Snow Chains on trips to the snow
      • $2 - 2.5K tops, hopefully less
      • Rims are basically brand new, will keep if I cant sell.
      • That's a fairly narrow tyre for an 18. Ideally you should look for a 7" wide wheel, maybe 7.5" but most are likely to be 8". The tyre will still fit but be more stretched exposing the rim to more easily be damaged. Just something to keep in mind.

      • 2.5k can get you most if not all JDM flow form wheel, another 1k will get you forged.

        • Personal taste of course but JDM wheels on a Euro? I'd be looking at BBS or OZ Racing etc.

Rim width and ET(offset) would be helpful.

They will be 18x7" with an offset of either ET40 or 45.

So that you have room for chains, lets assume ET40 (45 is closer to the strut). The Q2 comes with an 18x9ET45 which has the inner edge 18mm closer to the strut and 8mm more poke. If this is like other VW SUVs chain choice is limited (in Australia).

To get a bit more stance either get:
18x7.5" ET35 (strut clearance 1mm less and 12mm extra poke)
18x8" ET27 (strut clearance the same and 26mm more poke)

I'd be inclined towards 8" at ET30 but it's hard to say without knowing the exact strut clearance and outer guard clearance.

With your budget I'd look at Enkei, BBS, Team Dynamics, Sparco or O.Z. You'll be able to get something around 10kg or less. You do not want heavy wheels. Any more than 15kg, walk away.

        • Thanks!! Rims are 18 x 7, offset 45

          • @2ndeffort: 18x8 ET35 will be the "standard size" but 3mm closer to the strut. It should be fine.

If you got 7.5" then ET40 will be the pick.

If I was driving an A2 I would be buying hat, sunglasses and fake beard so i don't get recognised in such a car

    • +2

But the OP has a Q2 which are quite nice

    • Volvos don't make A2s, do they? I thought only Volvo drivers needed to get the hat and gloves. It's their driving kit! :p
