Paid for item at self checkout I didn't scan

So I bought a couple of things from bunnings today. Used the self checkout at I usually do.
Got home and checked the receipt and it had a $29 led downlight listed that I didn't buy, and never scanned.
My only thinking is that someone scanned it, then decided against checking out. Then I was the next person to use that terminal and didn't realize there was already an item scanned before I started. Quite possible, as I was taming an 18 month old while checking out…

What do you reckon my odds are of convincing bunnings of this fact and getting my $29 back? Probably just going to look like someone that's trying to scam them.

Beware of self checkout…

Ask to see the cctv footage, at that stage they should realise your not scamming

    • What if they say OP is in the blind spot and the cameras can't see OP scanning?

      • +1

I’d be surprised if each self serve terminal didn’t have a camera above watching everything scanned.
And wouldn’t asking to see the footage and potentially expose OP as a liar be enough evidence that OP wasn’t scamming? That was my point, which you seem to have missed.

        • Ah I was trying to be meta with this post but I guess it was a bit of a stretch.

    • +5

      There's always one.
Honestly, if it was a $5 item I would. $29 is getting up to the point where it's worth at least trying to get it back…

I'm with jelko, it's up to you to notice that the number on the eftpos terminal was $29 more than the goods you were buying. Not sure why he got all those negs…

        • -7

I know right? How would someone not notice an addition $30 on the total bill. In regards to the negs - a lot of people on this site are moronic iPhone-using sheep and love to neg anything that doesn't fit into their boring little PC leftist lives.

Well that took a turn…(note I may be leftist, but I don't use an iPhone and didn't neg).

I'm afraid I don't always do the mental math of how much the total is going to be when I'm buying a bunch of things. To be honest, I'm not sure I even checked the total, just knew it was over $100 and I had to key in my pin after tapping my phone.
I'm not blaming anyone but myself here, but that doesn't mean I don't want the money back if I can get it.

Wait what, I wouldn't blame yourself. I would as a shopper expect to be able to purchase and scan items without having to analyse my receipt, I would also expect that zero items are pre-scanned and should not be added before use of the terminal. I accept mistakes happen, and I wouldn't be going off at bunnings over it (which I know you're not) but I do assume and expect that Bunnings will fix this amicably and probably in an understanding way knowing that mistakes happen in life and we're all working together to make everyone whole (which would be giving your money back).

I guess all I'm saying is don't blame yourself here, hopefully Bunnings will work out well and it becomes a non-issue.

@NigelTufnel: I reckon you should 100% get your money back simply because it's the truth.

It's not your fault that the checkout doesn't auto self clear.

          • @dogboy: that escalates quickly.

we don't dispute that this is OP mistake.
but hopefully it's something that can be rectified by Bunnings if they can see on CCTV.

For you $29 might be a small change. But for somebody else, it's probably not a small amount.

And this logic has nothing to do with iphone sheep or not. I don't see any relation at all.

Just be honest and polite, don't try to be smart or act like a pro victim, otherwise you might come off as a scammer.

    • +2

Yeah, I mean. Clearly it was my mistake for not checking before starting to scan. So I can't act like too much of a victim.
But I did kind of assume that the employee that was standing at the checkout would clear the terminal if someone scanned and walked away. But they also normally check and stamp your receipt, which he didn't do either…

      • +1

The last person probably scanned it to do a price check and then left it. The staff probably missed it. I've had some close calls too, now I make sure the cart begins fresh and the price is what I expect.

        • +1

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Since there was an employee right there and most of the terminals were free (wasn't very busy), I just assumed it would have been clear (timed out or manually cleared). But you know what they say about assuming.
Will be diligent about checking before scanning now.

        • Like I did yesterday for the Coles macadamias.

Ask the pregnant lady from coles

A quick stock check should show a surplus of 1 and support your claim.

    • +14

You have too much faith in Bunnings inventory system :p

  • +14

I've never met anyone intentionally unhelpful at bunnings. I expect they will take your word and refund without much fuss. $29 for a life of good will - they know that's a bargain.

    • +4

Agree, I once paid for something that was over $50 and left it in the store. Only realised the next day. Went back and they gave me a new one no questions asked

  • +5

Bunnings are always good to me. You'll get a refund.

    • +3

Yeah. They've always been good for returns, just never had to deal with trying to get a refund for an item I never had…

Same as others - Bunnings is pretty good with these so go in and have a chat. They probably don't have to believe you, but worth a shot for $30.

    Beware of self checkout…

Do people not check that the screen is in it's 'starting' state before scanning?

  • +3

Used the self checkout at I usually do.

    That's the issue!

Jobs diminishing as many love DIY, do the work for the retail outlet, buy plastic bags whilst they used to be free .. "oops I forgot to get the bags from the boot of the car at the checkout .. oh well i just have to buy some more" (and they give you plastic toys for free at supermarkets to lure you in) and now you complain over an issue that needs human interaction?

Next time use a human checkout and save time over recourse :P

    • If only bunnings had online purchasing or contact options… Then I could completely avoid human interaction /s

      • Until you get ripped without knowing … and then run to this site for advice … and still no recourse until you speak/interact with a human
        .. Not there yet!

Went in yesterday and got my money back no questions asked. She also figured it was probably someone price-checking and walking away.
