[Hoyts Rewards] Free Popcorn Refills @ Hoyts

1410

Not sure if it’s been posted before but some changes to Hoyts loyalty program that is now offering free popcorn refills.

Members with an active and valid membership are entitled to receive free popcorn refills on the same day as a popcorn is purchased, either as part of a combo or as a standalone item and when a valid membership card (physical or digital) has been scanned as part of the original purchase and the same card is scanned as part of the free refill. To receive this benefit, the original empty popcorn container must be returned to a HOYTS crew member at the candy bar point of sale and the member must a request the popcorn refill. The same membership card used in the original purchase must be used. HOYTS will replace the empty popcorn container with a full one of a similar or same size. Promotional containers are retained by the member and a standard popcorn container will be provided as the vessel for the popcorn refill. Refills will be supplied in a standard container of same / similar size and this container will need to be used for any additional refills on that day. Members will not be supplied with another promotional container as part of this offer. Used popcorn containers must be returned to HOYTS Staff when this benefit is being redeemed. Popcorn refills are provided under the HOYTS Fair Go policy where HOYTS reserves the right in its sole discretion to refuse to refill a members popcorn where HOYTS believes the benefit / offer is being abused and / or the refills are not for personal use or are being unreasonably shared with other groups / people.

  • Can't believe I never knew about this

Almost makes paying $20 for 3c worth of kernels worth it.

  • +3

Nice, but I think I'll continue to smuggle in $2 popcorn from Colesworth instead of paying ~$20.

    • +2

Don’t even have to smuggle it in any more, you just have to have it in a bag and they NEVER check. Hell we have brought cans into the cinema before.

      • Yes that's what I do too. Slight correction, popcorn is around $10 not $20, but still. Would need to get around 4 free refills to make economic sense.

      • +1

The people checking your ticket are not paid enough or want to deal with the hassle of 'checking' your bags. They fully understand why you don't buy the overpriced stuff and fully aware if you are bringing your own food you're not buying the overpriced stuff either. So just be pleasant and assuming you're not taking an esky of food in with you, you'll be fine.

      • I just carry it in my hand. They don’t care. I swear it’s a myth that you weren’t allowed to bring in outside food.
People bring in maccas and everything…

This is a great way to get people to buy a second $12 cup of coke half way through the movie

  • It's been this way for several years.

If you're seeing a gold class movie, you can get them to come and refill it for you :)

Real life hax - scoff the popcorn down in the trailers, then refill before movie to get double the popcorn without missing the film (warning, your date may judge you for this and not go on any subsequent dates).

  • Grabs popcorn, this should be interesting.

  • Same deal as eventcinema ….

  • Cinemas that pop their own corn seem to be getting less and less. My local reading used to pop now they dump out of plastic bags, same as the local Hoyts.

    • Late reply but all cinemas do this with their leftover popcorn. They bag it up and then dump it out. If they predict it'll be a busy evening they'll pop more during the day, bag it up and dump it out when it gets busy. Cinemas are dead these days from what I've seen so it's probably just leftover popcorn from the night before.

Actually, this was a thing in the past. I'm not sure what cinemas do now but I'd be really surprised and shocked if they don't pop on site. I'm pretty sure the Hoyts and Event cinemas I've been to where they don't have a Candy Bar will have a popper behind the display cabinets where you pickup the popcorn from, at least that's what I've definitely seen at Ed Square, possibly Macquarie Park and Top Ryde, Burwood etc.

  • Are the drinks refils also free?

I thought this was a known thing with extreme combos. Used it for a few times. Hoyts only uses bagged popcorn and not fresh popped corn like village. IGA makes fresh popcorn daily and you can buy a huge bag for $5. Great for movie nights and better than microwave popcorn and If you are lazy to pop your own

    • We get the IGA as well and kids love it

    • IGA makes fresh popcorn daily and you can buy a huge bag for $5.

Really? Do all IGAs do this? That's a weird service. How big are the bags? Is it IGA branded or something?

      • +1

They have various sizes, they're just plain bags with a sticker with things like nutrition info, size, price, best before and I think the day it was made.

        • Interesting. Seems like such a random thing for them to sell lol.

          • +1

@Ghost47: They have a popcorn machine and everything. They usually make it at night and if you go in late, it smells like popcorn and butter.

I forgot I posted this and funny, i recently posted the same thing because its such a good deal. So much better and tastier

            • @rsop: Do all IGAs have it? I'm going to have to try it sometime!

              • @Ghost47: Im pretty sure they do. Every local one that I have been too make them.

      • +1

Most Drakes in SA do it as well. Love shopping there while the machine is going. Whole store/shopping centre smells like popcorn.

  • I thought this has been running for ages. If you ask nicely sometimes the staff will just give you a second box at the start… only happened to me a couple of times though.

if people go to the movies just because they can get free popcorn refills (more then the stomach can handle/obesity) thats sad and shoulnt be allowed due to how little control we sadly have with advertisement about food. especially when its a Movie place

    • +1

      of course you're from perth

  • +1

But the sign said all you can eat…

Im going tomorrow to hoyts to watch despicable me woth the free tix from uber. I just went to the shops and bought a 10pack of popcorn from coles for $2.75. Better for portion control and alot cheaper.

  • are you allowed to bring in food and/or drinks from outside from the food court? like gong cha or a full macca's meal?

    asking for a friend.

  • +1

I don't know if anyone else notices this but IMO Hoyts and Event cinemas popcorn is really hit and miss (and mostly miss IME).

It's usually pretty lukewarm because they pop it then dump into a large glass display cabinet or they box it up and keep the boxes in a cabinet and most of the time it's pretty bland like they've hardly added any butter salt. Village on the other hand tend to keep their popcorn in the popper and will box it upon purchase and they tend to add a good amount of butter salt. I actually prefer Popbox popcorn over Hoyts or Event cinema popcorn based on my past experiences. When you're paying $10+ for a box of popcorn + drink or whatever it's really disappointing when the popcorn is bland and cold.

    • Just ask for fresh popcorn, they'll usually scoop it from the actual popper instead of from the glass boxes

      • +1

Never had much success with that frustratingly. Either there's no one behind the display cabinet or the popper is turned off or they'll give an excuse and say "Oh these ones are fresh out of the popper" which doesn't turn out to be the case because it's lukewarm by the time we sit down in the theatre and start eating it. That excuse is basically saying "Sorry I can't be bothered taking a few steps to the popper and filling up a new box for you" which is just a horrible work ethic. I've probably tried asking several times and only got it out of the popper once.

Free popcorn refills are a bit of a joke in the industry. It sounds good, but everybody knows that very few people will get up in the middle of a film to go fill up their popcorn. And even if they do, the actual cost of popcorn is so minimal that it wouldn't at all be noticeable to the bottom line.

  • It is worth noting that some staff are not aware as I had this happen to me.

I don't know if its all Hoyts, but hoyts popcorn is not fresh and bagged popcorn they just top up. my Local IGA does awesome popcorn for $8 which is a massive bag

  • I used to have a Hoyts near me but I moved but when I did I used this a lot. It was great to have popcorn during the film, get a refill on the way out and have popcorn at home for a few days (kept in a zip lock to keep that crunch)

  • If you're going to Hoyts instead of Reading you're wasting more money than this deal saves you.

    • Are Reading cinemas that much cheaper though?

      • $15 for a standard adult ticket at Reading vs. $25.50 for a standard adult ticket at Hoyts

  • +1

Went to hoyts lux last week. They gave us one complimentary small popcorn and Pepsi Max. When requesting a refill we were told we needed to pay. Nice to see regular customers get refills but LUX buyers will be charged full price lol.

    What a fail by hoyts

    • +2

you got given complimentary popcorn and you wanted the same benefits as those who pay for their popcorn? Brother just be grateful that they gave you something and that you could pay to go to the cinema.
