Bargain seeker beware

Bought a deal ata good Melbourne bayside seafood restaurant - deal said "3 course seafood lunch for 2, valued at $151, for just $75"

Meal was GREAT - good presentation, well prepared, and most enjoyable even if we were overcharged for the deserts which where supposed to be included
BUT
THERE IS NO WAY THE MEAL DEAL MENU CHOICES OFFERED WAS WORT $151 FOR TWO!!!!

We landed up paying $75 for the voucher and and addition $29 for a lemon & lime, lemonade, one glass of wine and three coffees - so you have to ask yourself, even without the extras, is $75 for two is any big deal????????

Dont believe it when "they" say its a deal - check it out - the menu was on the web…

A bit of false advertising I believe - maybe the fair trade commission and/or the ombudsman might be interested.

  • …Let me guess

you bought a group buying site

  • So how much does the food normally add up to at that restaurant?

  • +1

I thought one would normally do some research first about the deal before buying…its not like this is the first time that has ever happened…
The 'value' they (restaurant, retail store etc) quote are rubbish most of the time IMO, part of their stupid sales technique.

  • I actually consider that pretty good value, drinks are so-so. But still not a bad price if the restaurant was as good as you say it is. As far as seafood buffet's go, that's a damn good price.

    • Dont think this is a seafood buffet. I guess the overall value would also depend on what type of seafood, if its expensive seafood like Lobsters and oysters, dont expect it to be cheap!

      • Ah, sorry…missed that part :) I've been under a bit of stress lately. Still, most very good restaurants usually run about $30 anyway…

  • how are we supposed to check out their menu without

    Name and Shame

  • Hmm, Detective Hat on….

I believe the OP is referring to this deal from Smartie

From the food selections from the deal (most expensive) via the websites menu.

    Entree - Tiger Prawns x 2 = $39.80
    Main - Steak x 2 = $67.80
    Dessert - No price listed (Assume $15 for Tiramisu?) x 2 = $30

So that's $137.60. Not sure where the other $12.40 is. Perhaps the desserts are more expensive or some of the dishes listed on the special menu are more expensive.

Why didn't you mention that desserts were included? It should mention in on the docket that you give them.

Comparing to the closet waterview restaurant, the Yacht Club, http://www.syc.com.au/food-beverage/harbourview/, the prices seem normal.

    $5.5 glass of wine (cheapest)

    $4 for a coffee x 3(assumption) = $12
    L&L - $3 (assume)
    Lem - $3 (assume)

    $24

Waterside dining is always going to be more expensive so I think $75 is probably reasonable for that meal. How much do you think it was worth?

  • I also attended a restaurant recently. No names cos i was impressed with their service but not the food. Regardless i noticed that their prices of drinks had doubled and they had a new drink menu. Ended up paying the same compared to my visit a few months prior.

Also noticed but didn't raise the issue that there were 2 drink menus going around. The normal paying customers were getting a cheaper version of the drink menu whereas anyone paying the coupon value had higher prices.

    It's not always a deal.

How can you not share the name with us? That is an absolute scam! Other people should be forewarned.

    • +2

Different drinks menus is a disgrace, and surely not legal. Definitely name this place - please!

    • At least tell us which buying company it was!

    • was gonna get that, but still thought it was much compare to most is only $50.
i guess this is a warning for those who's gonna use their voucher, dont buy any of the overpriced drinks!

personally i only have stuff included. if i want drinks, i buy a voucher which include them.
cause that's how they sting u!

  • I bought a deal for 2 ppl @ Thai Bai Sai (North Brisbane) - http://www.grabone.com.au/brisbane/thai-sa-bai-restaurant

This is the first one I've bought without checking for legitimate reviews, they have obviously adjusted their meals so that $25 is about right for what you get. Also the food was oily, tasteless ick, as soon as you step foot in the door an overpowering smell of prawn cracker oil hits you (and stays on your clothes after you leave).

Anyway, pays to always check and not just assume it's a deal because it's on group buy. Take COTD for example, most of their stuff these days not as discounted as they used to be.
