Violet Crumble Choc Honeycomb Bag (Made in Aus) 180g $2.20 @ Coles

800

I haven't seen the multi pack of Violet Crumble for what seems like a million years :)

Its back and unlike other favourites is still Australian made . I found the generic replacement at Coles and Woolies to be terrible .

Phil Sims, CEO of Robert Menz, one the biggest Oz-owned confectionery businesses, is a happy chap as well:
“There’s been huge consumer demand for the return of the Violet Crumble bag since it was withdrawn nearly a decade ago, so we’re thrilled to be able to bring this format back.”

Special thanks to Samwise for the link where I found this treasure :)

Yippee. I love these. Who remembers the add. "It's the way it shatters that matters"

      • +23

I was only getting one, after seeing this I'm getting three :)

      • pretty sure the sugar is worse for you than the gelatine

        • +5

I think he means that these are not vegan approved chocolates. Oh well there's some vegan burgers on the front page that might keep him entertained for a while.

      • +18

Ahh vegans - the only suffering they approve of is the suffering of the other people who have to listen to them preach.

        Reminds me of a joke:

How can you pick the vegan at a party?

Don't worry, they will let you know.

        • +4

Yeah yeah we laugh at the vegans, but that's just because deep down inside we know they're better than us.

A higher form of life that has evolved beyond the need to eat food and can survive on nothing but self-righteousness.

        • Reminds me of another similar joke…

If you meet a vegan that does CrossFit, how do they know what to talk about first?

        Only Vegan Jesus Saves

        • You're FIRED!

        • Even Jesus ate meat, not pork, right? Jesus is Jewish and got circumcised, if I read it correctly in the holy book.

So, are we following Jesus? Vegan? Anybody?

          • @brongz: Yes, Jesus ate meat and fish according to the Bible. My comment was to draw parallels to some people's militant approach to spreading the "gospel of veganism" to Israel Folau. Actually their methods are more akin to the most hated family in America

            • -1

              @thebargainhunter: .

Christians: "If you don't have faith in Jesus you are condemned to hell. Also if you're gay."

Vegans: "Harming animals unnecessarily is the behavior of a douchebag."

              Parallel?

              • @fantombloo: My comment clearly talks about some people's methodology for getting the message out, not the message. Picketing, breaking into farms, gatecrashing events, harassing people in restaurants, writing fake reviews etc.

                • -1

@thebargainhunter: Picketing, writing fake reviews = militant?

Breaking into farms and doing no personal damage, only collecting evidence about actual animal abuse = militant?

Harassing people in restaurants is not something I'd recommend, but = militant?

If you think those are militant, what then do you think about the intentional destruction (killing) of 60 billion warm-blooded animals every year just for people's tastebuds?

      • Omg thanks for highlighting that out, didn't know there is gelatine in these considering this isn't the typical "chewy" type of candy…

        • +1

Gelatine is in lots of other unexpected places too, like some thickened cream, and most cheesecakes.

    • It used to have more of a crunch. Bit softer now.

  • Wow

I'm not associated with coles. But can't seem to remove it

    Mod: Fixed ✂🆔

    • +17

To fix it you are required to quit your job and work at coles now. You can choose whether you want to collect trollies or do cash register though.

      • Filling up shelves to cut gym membership is good as well

The old violet crumbles were also Australian made but not Australian owned

  • +7

    It's too late now…

The current generation of kids have grown up eating Cadbury Crunchie.

They lost a whole generation of sales.

    • +1

I was just thinking this JV, I had them when I was a kid 2 decades ago and the family always compared the style Crunchie vs Violet Crumble vs random blocks you could get in lolly cups from Target.

      • My mum still calls them Hoadley's bars

  • +5

I'd agree the Coles/woolies homebrand are't up to scratch - the honeycomb itself i don't mind but the chocolate isn't there. My partner bought the other 2 options last week to compare :) I haven't had a Violet Crumble in years. Its own style of honeycomb, a bit different from the other offerings but they're all delicious in their own way.

https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/violet-crumbl… <—- This offer, I'd probably rate it at $2.20/180g but this is on a 1/2 price sale. currently $1.22 per 100G

https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/coles-choc-ho… <—- $3/400g full price, $0.75 per 100G. From the fact that you're eating straight sugar we concluded the last option was better value. If money is an issue they are still alright and if you aren't eating them back to back with the other ones they are enjoyable

https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/robern-menz-c… Currently $3.50/400g (save $0.80) $0.88 per 100G Much nicer chocolate than Coles brand.

Taste is obviously a subjective thing, so try and work it out for yourself. Would be interested if anyone compares Menz VS Violet Crumble.

  • No freaking way! :O

I used to always have a bag of these in my fridge back in my uni days. Sucked when they went out of production.

  • -6

    Contains gelatine :\

    • -2

Why the downvotes? I am not even vegan, but I don't see any need for boiled animal skins/bones in a honeycomb chocolate..

      • Why? Because of the obvious virtue signalling. And the fact that you're not vegan, makes it even worse.

  • Does these taste better than the crunchie brand?

    • +4

They are decidedly different for a similar product. I like both. If I had to pick some differences, I would say the Violet Crumble has a darker milk chocolate taste, is slightly less full on sweet compared with Crunchie and feels slightly denser packed with more of a shattery crunch. Hence the old slogan, "It's the way it shatters that matters".

    • +3

Way better taste and texture than Crunchie

  • Can OP please list the other favourites which aren't made in Australia?

  • What are the ingredients.

Menz in a lot of their products are full of gelatine and numerous other cheap imported additives.

    • full of gelatine

Could be worse, "cellulose" is a legal food additive.

      That's wood.

      • +2

No it isn't. Cellulose is a substance that is found in plants. While trees are plants, that does not mean cellulose is wood.

        • +2

While you are correct about cellulose, I can confirm that wood is added to some foods. I know an engineer who was part of a team that made a machine for producing wood particles of an exact size, for adding to food, to give a particular "mouth feel" to the food.

There are some pretty bad approved additives. "Vegetable carbon, carbon black" is also a food additive, E153.

Let alone the Azo dyes E102, E104, E110, E122, E123, E124. If memory serves me correctly, these were first isolated from crude oil, and are now made synthetically.

          • @Russ: Horrendous stuff. Any products you guys know of full of all this shit?

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Most brightly-coloured candy, soft drinks, breakfast cereal and even corn chips contain Azo dyes. Apparently corn chips don't look "orange" enough in their natural state, so they add colouring to make them that way. Many brands of chocolate add combinations of dyes to make the chocolate a more appealing shade of brown.

As an example, in Australia M&Ms contain E102 (the infamous Tartrazine, thought to cause misbehaviour in children), E110 (Sunset Yellow) and E129 (another Azo dye that I forgot to list above, Allura Red AC). When I was holidaying in Europe, I noticed that their M&Ms don't have the same colourings - many countries ban Azo dyes as food colourings. The reason I noticed is because I have a reaction to one of the dyes, it makes me nauseous, so I always read the label.

Wikipedia is very informative about what can contain these colours, e.g. the EU "allows for tartrazine to be used in processed cheese, canned or bottled fruit or vegetables, processed fish or fishery products, and wines and wine-based drinks". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartrazine

Sunset Yellow is the fluorescent yellow colour that custard tarts used to be. Many places are now using custard without Sunset Yellow, and the custard tarts look a little paler in colour. Either this is an entirely voluntary action by the stores, or maybe the global manufacturers of custard powder have stopped using Sunset Yellow because of the bans by many countries.

  • Love these.

Much cheaper per gram compared to the $1 bars now as well!

  • These violet crumbles have violet ends…

  • way better than crunchies

  • Made in Aus with ingredients from which country?
