Mazda 6 Servicing - Alternatives

My Mazda 6 2015 is due for its 80K service which I have been told is a major service. I called up the Mazda service centre and got quoted $485 in total. I am wondering if :

  • It's necessary to get the servicing done from the dealer- what are the cons of not doing it?
  • Are there any reasonably cheaper alternatives to get the service done without compromising on the quality?

Thanks!

No, not necessary unless it's a condition of maintaining any specific warranty or recovery plans and it may reduce the value and/or interest in the vehicle when selling it on. You'll generally have better luck with a 'full dealer service history'.

Literally any mechanic shop can do a standard service but there may be some specific items (e.g. transmission) on major services that you'll need a Mazda specialist to do. There are plenty independent specialists in all cities to call up and get quotes from.

  • $485 is reasonable for a major but every major is different. $600-$1k (or more) for a VW.

The question is, what are they doing for $485?

  • We have a CX-9, 2016. We do major services with dealer and then minor ones with Repco. Both log book. The reason we go to Mazda for the major is they usually have the item that needs replacing in stock, whereas Repco have, in the past, not had it and had to order thus meaning I had to return.

  • $485 doesn’t sound too bad for a major service to me.

  • When considering 10k service is $300+,$485 inclusive of parts is not unreasonable.

  • I called up Mazda and apparently the 80K service, which they call a major service, includes brake fluid flush, cabin filter, engine oil change & filter.

    • All stuff a regular mechanic can do, or really doable by anyone with some basic experience with working on a car. IMO don't stress about going to a dealer if its not under warranty.
