Looking for a quality first watch

I was looking through the prime day sale which had 50% off watches https://www.amazon.com.au/apb/page/ref=gbmg_mob_m-8_1273_eef…
I was after something that I could wear out in a smart casual setting but I'm unsure which brand to choose from and if the prices are truly heavily discounted at the moment. My price point is up to 150 but around 100 would be great

    have a look on aliexpress.

Many a fine looking inexpensive watches to be had.

what I have done is look there for something nice to look at and then wear it until the battery dies, and then buy another inexpensive but aesthetically pleasing watch to wear till that battery dies. etc. each watch goes into a box of watches.

nice looking watches can be purchased from US$5 delivered upwards.

not one of those watches ever lost time (except when the battery died - obviously). battery usually dies around the 2 year mark. sure, I could just replace the battery but I like a new shiny watch.

This will limit your choices, but even so there are some nice pieces to be had from reputable companies. General rules when I look for watches are: Stay away from "Fashion" brands (like Armani, Guess, Daniel Wellington, MVMT, etc - they charge a premium for just the brand and looks), on the same note, stick to well-known brands - Seiko is great for your price-range, or the classics like Timex.

Though depending on your age group and your friends circles, a decent watch from a fashion brand might be good enough, if you really like the design.

  • Anyone have any experience with the Seiko SNKN37? Its on sale for around $115 on Amazon right now.

    • Don't have it myself but have looked at it - it's a great entry-level automatic, just beware that it's pretty massive at 44mm and with its shape.

      • Hence why I'd recommend the SNK809

        • plus one for the SNK809 - im getting one myself actually haha

  • Seiko, Orient would be offer a range of affordable and quality timepieces.

  • Thanks guys, I had a tough time deciding between the bulova 97a126 and the 98a167 but ended up choosing the 98a167. I was leaning towards the Seiko originally but i wasn't a big fan of the look of the few that were on sale.

I personally like Citizens if you are looking for a combination of analogue and digital display. Casios are good too. I think the Japanese watches balance between quality and price. But don't buy their upmarket mechanical watches eg., Grand Seiko. the Swiss wins at this front.

  • Would like an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch but unfortunately it does not fit the affordable criteria :(

  • I don't think $150 is a price point that is generally considered capable of buying a 'quality' watch. For that price point, just get a swatch. $100-150 is really a low end watch.

  • Starbuy has mens citizen ecodrive watches for under 150$… I'd say that would be pretty hard to go wrong with given that level of quality and affordability and style.
Also the ecodrive will save you some money over time as you wont need to pay for batteries.
Just be sure to buy the right size watch …and let the watch charge from ambient light and not leave in a dark drawer somewhere for months
