Jetstar - feedback please with using them for domestic flights

Is Jetstar okay to use for domestic flights? I’ve googled reviews and does not look good, where customers flights have been cancelled when they have rocked up at airport etc etc

It’s a budget airline, but it’s no tiger. All my trips on them have been ok

    My preferences in order:
    Virgin
    Qantas
    Jetstar
    Tiger

The first 3 are reasonably fine. I wouldn't fly Tiger for anything important.

    • This :)

Jetstar are fine for domestic flights. I've flown with them numerous times. Have had one flight cancellation a few hours prior to scheduled flight time and was easy to reschedule.

I’ve flown with Jetstar loads when I couldn’t justify the cost difference to get to the virgin or qantas tier.

Jetstar are fine if you expect nothing from them. Including leaving and arriving on time.

  • Thanks for this feedback

  • Jetstar is a budget airline, the fares are low, there are a number of complaints, about flight delays. Were those flight delays Jetstars fault or weather etc. People who miss their filghts are upset, so would I be, and they complain to relieve that.

A slightly better place to check is one of the ratings agencies see

    or maybe better

Qantas and Virgin rate highest Jetstar is further behind and Tiger further than that.

Jetstar doesnt offer the same service as Qantas or Virgin, but charges in most cases much less. If jetstar was better Qantas and Virgin would have problems. By definition if they dont offer better service then they wouldnt be able to charge more.

I see from your profile you are in WA flying Jetstar or Tiger will mean quite cramped cabins, very little legroom.

I have flown Jetstar on the east coast 1hour flights and cramped spaces arent too much to put up with for an hour, but having flown Jetstar from Perth to Sydney 4 or 5 hours (and at night) was torture.

This might sound very controversial, but the majority of Jetstar and Tiger flights actually have basically the same legroom than the majority of Qantas and Virgin flights! Jetstar and Tiger have more modern A320 and A321, whereas Qantas and Virgin are still largely stuck with the old B737 and only fly the A330 irregularly up the east coast.

This is the standard Jetstar A320 layout: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Jetstar/Jetstar_Airbus_A32…, noting that the seats have 29" pitch (legroom).

This is the standard Qantas B737 layout: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Qantas_Airways/Qantas_Airw…, noting that the seats have 30" pitch. The width, however, is slightly lower.

Of course, the best is the Qantas A330: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Qantas_Airways/Qantas_Airw…, with 31" pitch.

      • An inch is a fair bit. It would work out to be approx. 10% more leg room. (that is, the amount of space between the front edge your seat and the back of the seat in front)

I don't necessarily disagree, but I think my broader point is that for domestic flights, the "cramped" feeling is all the same because almost all the flights are small narrowbody jets. Compared to flights on the newer Qantas 787 with 32" pitch, there's just really no comparison.

The other factor that doesn't help is the 3-3 configuration, so only 2/6 (33%) of the seats have aisle access. The 2-4-2 (4/8 = 50%) or even 3-3-3 (4/9 = 44%) that we're used to for international flights just feel much more spacious because there's more "aisle to seat".

Jetstar is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qantas.
This means it has access to, and support from, arguably the top domestic airline in Australia.
It is still a budget airline, but in terms of safety you don't have anything to worry about, and in terms of quality, they offer fewer frills but it doesn't feel like bottom-of-the market, and it doesn't have a reputation of being the "cheapest" — that would be more Tiger, which I've flown a few times and have been fine also.

  • Have been flying with Jetstar all the time. Most of the time they are fine.

I only encounter 1 issue with them so far, which they delayed my flight from Singapore, but no crew standing in the gate at Changi to notify passengers. And for 8 hours delay, their compensation is only a burger king meal voucher. I am guessing the fault lies with Jetstar Asia crew.

I've flown with them heaps. just did a bris-melb return trip over the school holidays.

both legs were delayed. going down was 1 hour delay. return was 1.5 hours.

both flights were late afternoon so if there is any delay during the planes daily schedule the latter flights will always be affected.

I've only previously had one delayed flight with them ~30minutes. I'd happily fly with them

it's a bargain airline so pay extra for everything. basically you are only paying for your seat on the plane.

    • Last time we flew to Melbourne we also had delays for evening flights.

Actually on the way back to Brisbane the plane departed only 20 mins late but because of traffic at Brisbane airport we had to circle for half an hour until it was our turn to land. This is a very common occurrence for flights arriving into Brisbane between about 6-8pm.

Should be better when the new runway is open.

They do cancel or delay a lot. My parents used Jetstar over the weekend to fly from Cairns to Sydney but their flight was overbooked and my parents had to stay one extra night in Cairns. Although, Jetstar put them up for a night in a hotel and paid for their dinner, breakfast and the taxis to and from the airport. Its a good budget airline but expect for delays, your flight to be cancelled or overbooked.

Reviews for any airline are not good - who sits around giving positive reviews, the only people spending the time to write a review are those who have an axe to grind. I fly domestic pretty regularly (usually the MEL-SYD route). My general take is that Qantas is too expensive, Virgin is great - both in terms of value and quality, Jetstar is fine, but I would only fly Jetstar if I'm getting at least $20 - $30 off the Virgin price.

Usually MEL-SYD on Virgin is $120 if you book early, around $80 or so on Jetstar, at that price, I'd rather go with Virgin, but if you pick up sale fares with Jetstar for $40, then sure.

    • On rare occasions, you can get Virgin Melbourne to Sydney for $99 or $109 one way.

  • Imo flying tiger or jetstar is no different when it comes to cancellations and delays, I've had both on each airline plenty of times.

  • Thanks for all the feedback
