Long time lurker. First Post; hope I am doing this right. :P

Just browsing through various sites and stumbled across this deal.
Looks like stocks are variable across different stores on the website; worth checking on the website whether your local store has any in stock prior.

I'm going to go after work today, pretty decent price just for some of the lights which may benefit from just the dimming.

  • Good deal - I missed out on the Amazon deal. Need a hub now

  • I’m confused
Is ther a difference between the normal bulb and an extension bulb?

  • is there anyway to have the Philips work without the bridge please?

    • No, you need a bridge

    • No bridge: on/off with traditional switch only. Absolutely pointless bulb to have

Philips Hue Dimmer Switch: Allows you to turn on/off and dim bulbs with the switch. Any other features like voice command, routines, controlling via an app, changing colour/temp on other bulbs is not possible. Adding and rearranging lights can also be confusing and problematic without the app.

Philips Hue Bridge: Full features available. Expensive, though you might be able to snag a cheap second hand one. I got mine for $35.

Amazon Echo Plus: The bulbs connect to bridge via the Zigbee protocol, and the bridge connects to your router and then through Wi-Fi to your phone etc. Since the Echo Plus has a built in Zigbee bridge, it can communicate with the bulbs directly without the need for the Philips Hue Bridge.

    • You can just use an echo plus as it has a hub.

I've confirmed (as I have this setup) that you can definitely turn them on/off and set the dimming level from Alexa. Not sure about scheduling things though.

  • these need the Hue bridge, don't they?

    • To access all the features, yes. You can turn on/off and dim lights with the Hue Dimmer Switch, but that's it.

  • So I'm confused. When they say "compatible with Alexa", what does that mean exactly? I.e. if you have an Echo Plus what will you be able to do with the hue bulbs? I (probably stupidly) assumed that as you get one of these free when you buy an Echo Plus v2 you would be able to fully control them via the that. Is that not the case?

    • Looking here:

it does sound like you can control the bulbs with just an echo plus???

Philips Hue connects via the Zigbee protocol. So usually it's: Philips Hue bulb connecting to the Philips Hue bridge vig Zigbee, which is connected by Ethernet to your router, then connected to your phone/tablet/Google Home via Wi-Fi. However, since the Echo Plus has a built in Zigbee hub, it precludes the need for a Philips Hue Bridge, meaning you can connect to your Philips Hue bulb directly through the Echo Plus.

      • Yes and works well.Thanks.
