Click Energy Pay on-Time Discount

Hi All,

Looking to get some feedback/general opinion about my latest power bill. I recently signed up to Click Energy after receiving a 9Saver deal through email - the pay on time 'discount' applies to both usage and supply charges resulting in a lower price (both supply and use) than my previous supplier (Alinta). On top of this the feed in tariff has increased to .16c compared to Alinta's .11 (I am QLD based, Energex Supplied) - all seems like i'm onto a winner!

I just received my latest 1 month bill and have found that although I have received my Pay on-Time discount (30% Usage and Supply), the 'discount' has also applied to my solar export - eg. Use + Supply - Export = 'Total'. 'Total' x .70 (30% discount) = total to pay.

I would expect that the discount should be;
1. Usage + Supply = 'Total Use'
2. 'Total Use' x .70 (30% Discount) = 'Total'
3. 'Total' - Solar Export = 'TOTAL TO PAY' (END FIGURE)

Is this legit? Or am I reading it wrong/expecting too much? Is this how it is supposed to work out?

We have recently had solar installed so I'm relatively new to how the export and discounts should be working. Looking at the above it looks like I'm theoretically receiving the Feed-In as my previous provider Alinta (.11c) which seems mis-leading/unethical

Thanks in advance for any feedback/advice!

  • From experience, Click did not do that to me but if your story is correct, then click is at fault.

Solar Export cannot be discounted as it is your entitlement in full. Your discounted rate agreement is against costs, not entitlement.

  • Solar export has never been discounted on my Energy Australia, AGL or Origin bills.

In your case it makes the Solar Export NFIT no better than anyone elses.

AGL Solar Savers is pretty good. 20c Feed-in. Reasonable power rates

  • Use + Supply - Export = 'Total'. 'Total' x .70 (30% discount) = total to pay.

This is legit. That's how they do it. Read the terms and conditions they gave you.

You haven't worded your post accurately. They aren't "discounting" your solar. They are simply applying the solar credit to the bill total before they apply a discount.

I think Origin? (don't quote me) used to allow separate bills for the export component if you setup a "business" account. This allowed you to double dip. Get a discounted bill, get a seperate bill (which was always a credit) for export. Pretty sure they phased that out a while ago.

  • Yeah you're right in the wording - I guess what I'm getting at is that the discount isn't just applied to the supply and usage charges, its off the total bill. If they sold it that way I'd agree with it.

I have received the terms and conditions (which I'll post) - and yes you're correct its written there - whats more is that they also include concessions, credits and rebates when calculating the final bill. This, although in their terms doesn't sit right with me.

Example - if my Power Bill is $100 for the month with the Govt providing a $50 energy rebate for whatever reason you SHOULD receive the full govt rebate - with click this would not be the case

    Click Example;
    $100 (Bill) - $50 (Rebate) = 50
    50 x .70 (Discount) = $35

    How I interpret a rebate to be processed;
    $100 (Bill) x .70 (Discount) = $70
    $70 - $50 (Rebate) = $20

In the above example Click are effectively pocketing $15 of your rebate.

Yes I do understand its in the terms and conditions - it just doesn't seem ethical that click look to be double dipping.

As always, I do have the option to walk away - I'm was just curious if this is common practice?

  • Terms and Conditions;

    Conditional Discount
30% discount on your usage and supply charges (net of solar
    export)

    Conditional Discount Details

You must agree to receive bills by email and pay by the due date using an approved payment method
(/bill-info/payment-options/). Discount is off your usage and supply charges after concessions, credits,
solar exports, rebates or fees when you pay your bill on time and is applied to your current bill. You will
not earn a discount when your account is in credit. The usage charges for Click Saturn Solar are the
same as the Click Energy Standing offer and the daily supply charge is the same as the Click Energy
Standing offer for this distribution area.

    • it just doesn't seem ethical that click look to be double dipping.

Actually it's the opposite. You're wanting a double dip.

As always, I do have the option to walk away - I'm was just curious if this is common practice?

      Yes.

      • +1

If he wanted a 30% additional credit on his export then it would be double dipping. But all he wants is the actual 30% discount off the supply and usage charges. Franky this is quite clever marketing, offering a high FIT when it completely nullifies the 30% discount. During summer the OP will probably be in credit which means he is receiving zero discount.

        • Exactly. Well surmised.

    • You have been ripped off.

Usage and Supply Charges EX GST should be discounted FIRST by 30%, then add GST, before then minus the Solar Credit.

As far as I know, the GST is also levied on the CONSUMED part of the service (ie: Usage + Service), not after the solar credit (although this may be in your favour so the GST is calculated on lesser value due to the solar credit).

In all of my previous retailers, they did this although it has been more than 10 years since I have been with Click.

      • You have been ripped off.

        They haven't been.

Usage and Supply Charges EX GST should be discounted FIRST by 30%

        They were.

then add GST, before then minus the Solar Credit.

Solar credits are applied first. GST is always applied last. That's for every industry.

It may also be against GST Law

Haha. Funny. Care to back up that claim.

In all of my previous retailers, they did

        No they didn't.

        • Not the experience I have and my bill is next to me

Service to Property incl GST $30.49
Peak and OffPeak incl GST $128.69
          Total Cost incl GST $159.18
          Less Solar Credit $10.77
          Bill Due $148.41

So OP. Up to you if you believe you have been ripped off or not.

          • @burningrage: No discount? So your example proves exactly nothing.

            • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Dont be nasty. The number I have got is post discount.

That is to say, the cost incl GST is already post discount. Then the solar credits apply.

              • @burningrage: I'm not being nasty at all. I'm stating you have alleged something as fact, and when called up on it, have provided an example that doesn't actually back up your claim.

You don't even need to post up your bill. Tell me which retailer and I'll point you to their own terms that explain how their discounts and credits are applied to their own bills.

                • @Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Which part of the bill I restated above that doesn't back up my claim?

I could have written the bill something like "Service to Property Incl GST Ex Discount $43.55. After discount $30.49" but in trying to make it simple for OP to highlight why I believe he may have been ripped off, I simply written everything after discount for ease of reading.

All I am saying is in my experience, all retailers I have ever been (Lumo, Tango, Red, etc) did apply Solar Credit AFTER all discounts being applied onto Service and Usage costs incl GST. I used to be with Click but I didn't have solar back then.

And which part did I allege something as fact? Are you talking about GST Law? That comment has been revised and you went on about it as if I haven't revised the comment.

If those retailers have since changed their T&C to be what you believe it is, then that's new and I wouldn't touch them for my future business.

If the solar credit is applied BEFORE the calculation of discount of usage/service, then I think mathematically speaking the solar credit would be effectively "discounted" too and I am not the only one came to that conclusion.

                  • @burningrage:

Tell me which retailer and I'll point you to their own terms that explain how their discounts and credits are applied to their own >bills.

    • Geez I'd get off this plan asap, that's a terrible deal.
