Wi-Fi Router for NBN HFC

I was thinking any modem router would work with nbn HFC, as it came with NTD.

But i saw ABB instruction - requires modem router with WAN port & IPoE setting.

Does the TPG Huawei HG532d works with ABB NBN HFC ?

I thought it's as simple as disabling DHCP and plug the network cable from NTD to any of the LAN port ?

Thanks.

No, the network cable from the NTD must be plugged into the WAN port. The back of your modem should have 1 single port labelled WAN.

If the setting is set to PPPoE then you will need to change it to IPOE (this setting is often called Dynamic or DHCP)

Your modem router is also very old, it's from 2013 or 2014. If your Huawei doesn't have "WAN" printed on the back of it, it likely doesn't have a WAN port and you'll need to buy a new router.

Setup on a brand new router should be plug and play when your ISP is using IPoE, most routers have autosensing and will by default choose Ipoe and automatically assign IP addresses, you typically do not need to change anything at all.

If you bought a Modem Router combo then the only thing you need to change is it's mode of operation, you need to switch it from DSL Modem mode to Wireless Router mode.

    • Thanks. Cheers!

    • hmm… must it have separate wan port ?

i thought any wireless router would work

      • I haven't had time to search, but I believe LAN Port 1 is usually the WAN port. If it doesn't work try port 4.

Then fully reset your router (there's usually a Reset switch, push it down for 5~10 secs till it reboots), login to your router and change it's operational mode from DSL Modem to Router. It should work straightaway assuming your NBN HFC modem is working correctly.

You may also want to do a speed test while you're connected directly via Ethernet, to see if your old Huawei can keep up with NBN. Some old modem routers do not have very good WAN to LAN performance and can bottleneck your NBN speed

  • I use a asus rt-ac69u its was a bit tricky to get working as node/iinet/tpg require vlan tagging on wan port, there is a iptv menu that allows vlan tagging. Its night and day better than the Huawei trash.
