[NSW] Donate a School Meal to WFP Every Time You Tap on or off NSW Transport Using Your Westpac Mastercard until August 04 2019

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Each time you complete a journey on the Transport for NSW network between 1 July and 4 August 2019 and pay for the full adult peak hour tap on/tap off fare with a Westpac Mastercard, we’ll donate one school meal to WFP at no cost to you.

Nothing here for personal gain, but good to make people aware of this scheme from Westpac. If you're not utilising the Opal benefits during the week, and travelling during peak hours already, it might be worth using your Westpac issued Mastercard to make a free donation.

Below extracted from Westpac email and from the attached link.

"We’ve partnered with Mastercard to support the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to help make your daily commute count.
Pay for a full adult peak-hour tap on/tap off fare on a NSW train or ferry with a Westpac Mastercard® between 1 July and 4 August, and we will donate a meal to the WFP at no cost to you. (And yes, you are welcome to use your linked Westpac Paywear™)"

One tap On/Off = One donation of a school meal

I tend to both agree and disagree.

If its a particular product being sold with "for every product sold xxx goes to a charity", then it is a sales pitch; but for many, and myself included; public transport is something we're already paying for and we've got a choice of Opal (if we are doing 5 x weekly commutes this is definitely the better option) or "x" Mastercard. This week I'm doing only 4 days; and may be again next week; so rather than use Opal, I'll be using my Westpac Mastercard.

I wasn't aware; and think its worth letting people know about - If you're using another 'xxx Bank' Mastercard, you aren't donating a meal, so it doesn't have the same benefit - you're helping to make a donation by using Westpac Mastercard in this instance for a limited period up until 4th August.

Totally understand your point of view however; thanks for sharing.

Yea its good and im sure your post will mean more meals donated.

      • You miss out on the 5% discount with GCs if you topup your opal at Woolies or Coles though so still not worth it purely from a financial perspective even factoring in < 8 trips a week..

Contactless has several disadvantages over opal cards

Opal benefits such as Weekly Travel Rewards, Transfer Discounts, off-peak metro/train fares, Opal Trip Advantage and free access to Park&Ride carparks are not available with contactless payments. https://transportnsw.info/tickets-opal/opal/contactless-paym…

Also as mentioned above, you also miss out on the discount from topping up an opal with discount giftcards

So basically this is only good if you have a westpac card, are taking a trip during peak hour, without transfers or a break of journey, not using a carpark, not planning to take more than 8 trips that week, and have no access to a supermarket to top up your opal.

Otherwise you are paying more for your trip to do this and could just take the money and make a donation yourself, and keep the receipt for tax purposes.
