Please Recommend a Conveyancer for Standard Contract Investment Property in Hobart

We're looking at an investment property in Hobart
We're based in Melbourne.
Its a standard REIT contract, 30 days, nothing unusual.

Can anyone personally recommend a Conveyancer that they trust who could handle this?
Been quoted $1600 (including disbursements) which I think it a little steep.
Not terrible, but should be able to do better for such a run-of-the-mill transaction.

Thanks!

Goodman Conveyancing did our property in Hobart. Never had to meet in person and their price was reasonable compared to others we got quotes for. Well under $1,600 for us.

    • thanks for that - but as it turns out Goodman were the ones I referenced in the OP. $1600 (including disbursements)

How long ago was your txn if you don't mind me asking? Maybe they hiked their fees
If that's the going rate for a decent job I'll take the hit, but there seem to be cheaper available.

      • Just over a year ago. Not sure why the price difference either but perhaps give them a call if you haven't already. They did a good job for us and we went with them on recommendation from others.

Whack in your post code. Call them all and get an estimate.

Easier for you to use someone in VIC. May be cheaper using someone in TAS.

    • thanks - in your opinion is there any merit to the rationale to get someone in Hobart because they "know the market" and any possible legal deviances from other states?

Someone in TAS will know the documents and work required. It'll be easier (for them) and cheaper than a firm in VIC who may be unfamiliar with other jurisdictions.

On the other hand if the TAS firm isn't "up to speed" with e-conveyancing they'll make it a pain for you to sign documents, verify identity etc.

  • My friend was in the law and left after some unfortunate business. Afterwards he did some conveyancing for me at couple of hundred dollars a time. Obviously you have to get things right but there isn't that much involved. IMO $1600 is an outrageous transaction cost for the amount of work involved.

We used Helen Kent from LowrieKent in 2014 - it cost about $1400 and she did a great job. I'd happily recommend her.

This was also a remote purchase - we were in Perth and had no issues with paperwork and signing. I'd definitely pick someone local - the laws are different enough state to state to make it worthwhile.
