Asus PL-AC56 Kit 1200Mbps AV2 1200 Wi-Fi Powerline Adapter Kit $179 ($149 with $30 Cashback Promotion) + Shipping from Umart

70

These are normally expensive (~$210-$230), and still more expensive than the TP-link powerline adapters. But I prefer this model because it has Wifi Mesh and 3 Ethernet outlets apart from a powerline passthrough option.

This is the cheapest I've seen it in a long time after Centrecom had them for $149. Still a good deal if you add the ASUS promotion from here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/463725, and add the CashRewards cashback on top as well. Shipment from Umart varies a lot, so that might be a deal breaker for some. Price match with stores is another option.

  • So does this mesh with your existing wifi network when connected?

    • +2

Yes, but unlike a dumb WiFi Repeater, which simply pick ups and re-transmits your WiFi signal with terrible signal loss, this will actually carry your Internet connection from your modem/modem-router over the internal electrical wiring in your house and then transmit it via WiFi into the room it's connected in (so in effect, it's like physically having the modem/modem-router in two rooms).

It's a much better solution for WiFi deadspots in the house (especially those on the opposite side of the house from where your phone line and hence modem/modem-router is), though spending big on a very high-end router with a high quality WiFi radio that provides really good coverage from the get go is the best solution to ensuring hassle-free WiFi signal strength.

I have the ASUS 88U and bought this because I wanted ethernet access to the router on the first floor. Your comment is spot on though.

      • Thanks, I have a Xioami wifi repeater which was alright until I wanted everything to be on the same network for smart globes/switches/speakers. Might grab one of these at some stage, especially once the kids are old enough to start using wifi up the other end of the house.

        Thanks for the detailed info.

  • Are the dimensions at the ASUS site correct: Dimensions 151.44 x 80 x 43.36 ~ cm (LxWxH) or should that be millimetres?

    • Yep, they're mm alright. These plugs are huge. You can't plug anything next to them, unless it's really slim.
