15.6" Laptop for Teenage Son

hi all

just looking for a cheapie laptop for my 15 year old son, he's going to be using it for the usual facebook, school work, watching movies and some autocad inventor student edition for school projects.

Is this a good buy for $600 or is there something better out there or will there be better deals over the next couple of weeks being EOFY ?

thanks

Get him a 15" MacBook Pro, and it will last him for years to come.

      OP asked

      cheapie laptop

and then quoted a $600 Asus. Then you said,

      15" MacBook Pro

      which starts at $2,099. Huh?

As for larajen214, Asus is a good brand but the i3 laptop there is a bit dated. However it should be fine with the list of things you mentioned.

      • Thank you I was thinking the same. I'm sure my son would love a MBP as would I but the budget is much lower.

This one, I have been eyeing on it for a while…

  • If you're going to get half of the purchased price back from Education Tax Refund, do you think you can add a bit more to the budget?

We just bought an Asus K53SV with blueray player for $950 from Bing Lee over the long weekend, it has 2G dedicated graphics and i5 processor. If you are getting ETR, this would add $175 (after the rebate) to your current budget.

    • No that is too much. He is buying it himself and is only 15. We will be helping him out with it and could maybe go to $700 to get a newer processor but no more.

    • Also he doesn't need a bluray player as he has a PS3 but any suggestions are very welcome thanks. I was hoping there would be some super bargains at this time of year.

      • When we were there, the model without the bluray player was $820, so it's still a bit over his budget.

Still 2 more weeks til 30th of June, so I'm pretty sure for i5 or i3, there would be more bargains to come. Best of luck :)

  • I would suggest a 13.3-14 inch, I have a 15 inch laptop and it is too large and heavy to carry around.

Here is something that is quite good and more then 1/2kg lighter:

**There are better laptops around that are also lighter but the price starts getting higher, I suggest going to JB hifi and looking at the Asus u30's and try to negotiate it down. As stated before there will be some bargains that will appear so be patient and you should be able to get something quite good.
