The "Was $389" is a bit of a stretch since PCCG & CPL has it at $159

Side note depending on where you are from shipping costs it might be cheaper to get it from Futu online ebay

    Free shipping with code POLAR20 @ $159.20

  • Also, CL18…

    • could you explain to a computer noob what it means? thanks

Friend, it's the cas latency. It's the latency between the memory controller accessing data and the data being available. Basically lower is better and the usually cl is 14-16 until you go to budget ram. There's sub timings as well but for the most part you don't need to care too much.

When the frequency is increased the CL generally increases too, so there's usually a balance of speed. This ram in particular isn't actually that bad because of it's higher frequency, but generally theres diminishing returns on frequency unless you're doing more specific applications.

And by diminishing returns the people spending money on fast RAM mean at most a 5% increase in performance in certain situations that most people aren't usually in such as decompressing a file. The money would be better spent on 2133Mhz RAM and a faster processor or GPU instead.

@Diji1: In the case of Ryzen 3000, although the timing and speed isn't that much of a deal compared to Ryzen 2000 and 1000, it's still relevant per this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idfzepqhPfk&t=174s

@boku: Ryzen 3xxx series, memory tests shows even up to DDR4-4000, the performance difference is around 5% from DDR4-2400 to DDR4-4000, with DDR4-3600 generally taking the top spot. A better CPU easily beats that (and you don't need to worry about checking benchmarks to figure out which apps benefit more from better memory).

Furthermore, RAM makers do play around with the numbers. For example, this one has below par memory latency timing. And, it is from Corsair, a reputable brand.

It's relative. If you are getting a Ryzen 9 CPU, obviously don't pair it with really lousy RAM modules. For bargain hunters, getting a bargain on a CPU is more realistic than top notch RAM modules.

              • @netsurfer: Yep, I think 3600 C16 is the optimal RAM speed. But difficult to get.

  • AMD themself say 3600Mhz CL16 is the best bang for buck for zen 2

    • This is C18, but yes

Or just get this for $127, pretty much the same speed when you factor in frequency and timings

    • Yep, totally agree.
