What Is The Best VR Experience Available in Australia for under $800?

I'm fascinated by VR and wondering what's good/available in Australia under $800. There's a lot of headsets out there, some from Oculus, HTC, Microsoft (but not available in the MS store in Australia), Google, Samsung etc.

I think my PC has the absolute minimum specs to run a headset (i7 7700HQ/GTX1060 6GB/16GB RAM) but could potentially use an all-in-one headset though I think it wouldn't be as powerful (then there's some third party software like Riftcat but I found it dodgy on my phone). I would like to watch my own videos/movies on a virtual "big screen" and play some games, I've already got a few on Steam.

I find Cardboard style holders clunky and cumbersome to get the phone in and out.

Also not averse to PS4 but I don't have one.

    Oculus quest. Enough said.

Actually I would say Oculus Rift S.

  • I'd wait a month or 2 for HTC Vive Cosmos since it should be in that price range and pretty good spec wise.

  • You're 1060 is old, but it should still run most VR titles comfortably.
The main thing is what kind of titles you want to run. The Oculus Quest is standalone and doesn't need wires, but its processing power is limited.

The Rift S run all the well known PC VR titles and simulators but be sure to check your interpupillary distance as the distance is fixed at 64mm. You shouldn't run into too many issues as long as you're around +-4mm. I suggest buying off Amazon for their return policy, in case it doesn't agree with your face.

  • I bought a Vive from Gumtree and have never looked back.

Most games on Steam are designed for the Vive, and the tracking is fantastic.

I've seen some on Gumtree for around 400 bucks, and it's a steal for that price.

    • Can get a new Oculus Touch pack for that much …

      • I've found my Vive to have slightly better tracking than the Oculus headsets/controllers I have used, and the Vive also allows for a bigger playspace. Marginal differences, but differences nonetheless.

EDIT: Correction, I didn't realise how cheap the Rift S is these days, until the Index makes its way over to Aus the Rift S looks like the best value under $800

Not what this guy says …

  • With vr desktop the quest can run steam titles. No wires.

No, that's missing the 'virtual' part, which is quite fundamental, I'm surprised you missed it.

  • I did quite of a bit research earlier this year. Oculus Rift S is definitely the best option.
