Does Made-in-China Means Bad Quality?

Hi all

Last week a salesman knocked on my door and introduced their solar panel products. Talking about inverter, he recommended two products: A (made in China, cheaper price) and B (made in German, higher price).

According to what he described, B is better quality because it was made in German instead of China.

Just out of curiosity, do people really think made in China = bad quality?

Was it made while speaking German but located in a Chinese factory?

    • like car they have join vanture but VW cars are poor in quality compare to the one made in German.

My mum was made in China. She is a top quality human being :)

Pick Made in Taiwan or Hong Kong, usually they are better.

On the balance of probabilities, when Made in China, it is of a lower quality.

There are many many examples of China's questionable manufacturing practices.

    • Toothpaste with dangerous chemicals.
    • Lead and Mercury in makeup.
    • Melamine in milk products including Baby Formula.
    • Fake eggs.
    • Bad quality counterfeit products.

If food is from China, it is out of the question.

I previously wanted a Volvo before it became a Geely.

  • I would think made in China has high protenial of being polluted even with high quality except it is for the high garde of government use.

It is just the warranty control is bare minimum, people use money for corruption instead to put in for quality control.

  • Salesmen say things to steer a purchaser in a particular direction or to appeal to perceived prejudices.

Some chinese made inverters are rubbish (the one on my old house that had a name similar to Sanyo), some are good (Zever). Like anything, do your research and don't believe what salesmen tell you

When a sales person has to use "it's better because it is made in Europe", it means it is probably crap or the sales person is incredibly inept.

If I have a product that is superior, I would tell you all about how it is superior. Better specifications, enlarged pictures showing fit and finish differences, ROI figures…

So many ways to highlight why a product is better and as a cherry on top, they can add that it is made in wherever.

If the only distinction they can market is the country of origin, you should be wondering just how bad the product must be.

  • As a general rule yes, made in China is not such great quality. My Chinese neighbour has even said so.

    • +6

But that would make them not good quality, also makes their opinion not great quality.

So if your neighbour's opinion isn't great quality, does that mean made in China is actually good quality? But then that would mean their opinion is good quality, which means made in China is actually not great quality.

  • My take is that some Chinese stuff is poor quality, and some is ok but finished very poorly.

As long as you're happy filing off rough edges and resoldering bad joints you can get some decently serviceable stuff from China.

    My 2c.

    Your question is too broad.

Ask yourselves this: which one you are going to buy: a spoon for $1 (made in china) or $5 spoon (made in Germany)?

    and then this:

which one you are going to buy? a car made in china for $5k or made in german for $7k?

  • Yeah Chinese brands are typically worse. Check out this video, it should explain why and what Chinese people think of their own brands https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYOwZwJrsqE

  • A salesperson saying his product is best. Totally impartial.

    • I believe the salesperson was offering two options a cheap Chinese brand or more expensive German - so this doesn't make sense

  • made in German

I don't think the language matters

    • +1

      Nor the punctuation apparently.

  • Depends on quality control really.

Plenty of tech products (phones, tv's etc) are made in China and some are good. Same goes with clothing & furniture

Imported food from China is where I draw the line. Remember the frozen berries & human excrement?

  • My iPhones made in China. Theres probably Chinese parts in that made in Germany solar panel too

Many so called european solar panels are made in asia.
Chinese make the worst and also the best… do your homework.

Of course people think Made in China is usually lesser quality. I, like everyone else, have experienced it with products I've bought, but that is due to the significant quantity of products made in China.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, Western companies seek out manufacturing in China to achieve lowest cost when making price sensitive products, and in seeking lowest cost production they are okay with cheap materials and standards to achieve that, depending on the purpose/market. Companies that manufacture in Europe (eg Germany) can't achieve such low costs, so they only survive by seeking out niche markets such as high quality.

There are plenty of exceptions where companies are making quality from China, Xiaomi seems to pride itself on higher quality for example. However there are soo many cheaper products that only come from China, so this outweighs and skews people's perceptions overall.

This perception can change overtime, people in Australia used to think Japanese products were lower quality, but now are often highly regarded as high quality (e.g. cars, home entertainment electronics).

As my dad says, China will make anything you want in whatever quality you are ready to pay for.

You want a quality product from china, they can make it. You want cheap and nasty, they will make it.

    • +1

Yes and lots of people want cheapest, so out of shear volume they are 'tarnished with that brush' from a market perception.

  • we need a royal commissions on sales practices of salesmen
just like brokers, financial planners and banks

I'm sure the German made more expensive product had higher commissions so thats why he got you to buy it

    • Do you actually think the Chinese one was likely of equal or better quality or are you just being polite?

It is not lesser quality because it is Chinese, but chances are the company that ordered it specified cheaper materials and testing/standards so as to achieve a lower price point.

The German company wouldn't survive unless they can market a high level of quality.

I don't agree on the comission reason. The salesperson would have been given two products to sell, he wants a sale either way, but you get two types of customer - price sensitive customers who want cheap systems, and customers who will say they want the best quality - so he took both along to make sure he can cater for both in terms of market perceptions. He has just been a bit tactless in describing the nationality of manufacture as the reason for the price differential. That's not right but proves that most people share the perception, rightly or wrongly.

I'd probably buy the Chinese one myself, but I am on OzBargain so no surprises there. However I'd research the actual model/reviews rather than drawing blanket stereotypical conclusions.

This is my 2c: a product isn't just low quality just because it's made in China. It's generally low quality because the company is a no-name company that has no reputation to protect. It just happens to be that China has so many no-name companies because of its lax regulation and manufacturing advantage.

There's also price to consider. For some strange reason, people buy Chinese products that are many times cheaper than the local retail products and expect them to be of similar/reasonable quality.

Practically everything is made in China, everything from garbage throwaway plastic crap to high-end electronics. "Made in China" isn't remotely an indicator of quality anymore, at least on its own.

What this means is you really need to do a lot more research when comparing various options - if it's a knockoff style thing, imitating some other good, yeah, it'll probably be crap, but there's a lot of Chinese made goods that are pretty damn good. For one, look at some of the pretty damn decent Chinese dash cams that get touted around here. I've bought a LOT of cheaper Chinese goods off aliexpress over the past year that are equal or better quality than some of the stuff I've bought locally. But I had to research them pretty thoroughly, because for every great item there's a bunch more that're shit.

A lot of people still cling to the "Made in China = garbage" stereotype, because, like I said, basically everything is made in China, so if some cheap crap (or even not-so-cheap crap) breaks, and you see Made in China on it, that just plays into confirmation bias. The sheer volume of manufacturing means statistically you're going to find most things that break do come from there. But so do most of the things that don't.
