NBN HFC - use existing modem?

GF has been given a final notice to get off her TPG ADSL2 and get onto NBN. She's going with either Aussie BB or TPG.

NBNco website says she's on HFC (Crows Nest, NSW).

My understanding is that "NBNco" installs an NTD (Network Termination Device) in the form of an Arris CM8200(b).

She (it will be me) can then plug (and configure) her existing Netcomm modem router (it's about 3yrs old - I think it's a NetComm NL901acv) and the modem part is "turned off" and just the router is utilised.

Have I got this right?

Also, her house is a 100yo shotgun terrace (long and narrow). The telecom connection is in the front room. What is the likelihood they'll put the NTD in the middle of the house (loungeroom)?

Thx all

Yep should be fine. I did exactly this with my Archer d7. Had to configure it differently but it works fine… Although I feel like it struggles sometimes with the extra speed, could use an upgrade eventually.

Depends on the contractor and how much extra effort/time it will take. My outlet was behind a piano (so would have been extremely difficult to keep the NTD there) so I asked if he could move it to the hallway a couple of metres away. He was reluctant at first, saying he could just run a cable along my skirting board, but I pulled the "my wife won't like that/will kill me" (probably true) and insisted/pleaded he moved it, taking him under the floor and showing him exactly it needed to go.

All he had to do was drill a new hole, move the cable over and install a new outlet. It only took him about 10-15 minutes extra.

Dunno if it will work, but maybe you can sweeten the deal with a six pack or pineapple? That was going to me my next option if he didn't play ball.

If all else fails, she/you can consider mesh maybe?
