ATO App myDeductions - Has Anyone Used It?

I started lodging my return today and found out about the ATO app and its myDeductions feature. Anyone care to share their thoughts on this app? How does it compare to other "ledger" apps? It all feeds into the self service myTax when you lodge with no problems? Any good or useless fed spyware?

It looks decent enough to me, UI seems good enough, I'm going to give it a go and see how I like it. If it feeds directly into your return when you lodge that's pretty nice. There's plenty of stuff I could claim but don't because I'm lazy and don't diary it/don't keep receipts for small stuff and don't feel like starting up a system for it.

Things I'm too lazy to claim but might be able to justify to the tax man through his own app:
Boss calls me on the personal phone once in a while
Driving between work sites (rare)
New mouse/keyboard/office sundries
Work from home partial electricity etc (rare)
Working lunches (at the pub)

This is all stuff I probably should claim but it's all small and too easy to ignore, until now. Might add up to a few hundred extra in my pocket when it's all said and done. Am I missing something? This app is making it so damn easy to claim so much more, just enter your expense, snap a piccy of the receipt, done. I feel sorry for the tax man's wife, maybe she can be my secretary to help keep the wolves from the door.

  • I use the ATO app and mydeductions pretty happy with it. Take a photo of the receipt and be done with it - really easy.

  • most of your things don't require hard receipts. Just don't be greedy

Boss calls me on the personal phone once in a while

claim 5% of the value of your handset and phone plan

    Driving between work sites (rare)

You can claim up to 5000km per year without a logbook but you do need to be able to justify (not prove) if asked.

    New mouse/keyboard/office sundries

Claim 10% for work use portion

Work from home partial electricity etc (rare)

    Claim $2/week

    Working lunches (at the pub)

You haven't got a hope in hell

Don't forget $2/week (it might be $3 now) for laundry of PPE or company branded clothing.
bank fees of the account your pay goes into
    small percentage of internet costs
    bag ("briefcase") for work
    union dues
batteries for calculators or other tools
USB sticks for storing tax documents
    donations >$2 to charities

    • I'm already over the 300 with some other stuff I didn't mention so everything requires a receipt. The he app seems good for the little things I normally wouldn't bother with. Some nice ideas you've posted there.
