Parking in Loading Zone Blocking Rolling Gate

Hi all. Recently I tried to park near Melb city over weekends.

If you are outside of loading zone time (for example, parking on Sunday under a Mon-Sat 15mins loading zone), do you need to avoid those exits or roller gates?

Also, do you guys have any suggestions on where to part over weekends in Melbourne?

Cheers

  • Do you really need to park in the city over a weekend? Can't you catch public transport?

Have you seen the riff raff that use public transport?

I catch Vline to city. Over weekends it is like one train every 40 mins. It took me like 1.5 hr from my door to my destination. If I drive, it took me around 40 mins in total.
Also, it happens so many times that after dinner with friends, when I reach Southern Cross, I need to wait for like at least 30 mins for a train.
So personally I think driving to city is more flexible and time-saving.

      • That sounds pretty good. Here I can drive in 20 minutes and it takes nearly 2 hours by public transport.

always avoid exits and roller gates, you never know if emergency services need access etc

  • do you need to avoid those exits or roller gates?

It depends on the signage. Is there signs that restricts parking in front of the entry/exits?

    • Nearby there are a few gates got sign "keep clear 24 hr". I am pretty sure I will never park there. Just curious about those do not have sign, also included within loading zone.

      • "keep clear 24 hr".

These are not legally enforceable unless erected by a local, state or federal authority.

But there are laws about blocking driveways. People have been fined for parking across their own driveway.

          • @Euphemistic: That is true. However, it is difficult to say if the entry/exits that op is referring are defined as a driveway under the road rules. A few images of the locations may be helpful.

            • @whooah1979: This is true, but I would expect that most roller doors the OP is talking about would be for vehicular access. For me, the giveaway would be a layback in the kerb. Ie no layback, it’s probably not a driveway.

  • Pre book with Wilson, it's cheap: $9-12 for the day. I do it most Saturdays and no issues with book-a-bay

It doesn't matter the time, the day, location or signage, you should never block driveways or crossovers. Imagine if someone parked your driveway, you'd be pissed off.

In many councils it's illegal to park over your own driveway.

    Who taught you to drive?

Sorry mate should make it clear.

It is not a residental area. It is more like small companies. Gates are for deliveries. That's why it is covered within "Loading Zone" from Mon to Fri. There are a few gates nearby got "Keep Clear" sign, which I will never park.

It doesn't matter if it's an industrial area, the CBD or a state forest. You should never block any driveway, gate or crossover.

      • See Road Safety Rules 2017, SR No 41/2017. Part 12.

Wow great resource. Very detailed!!! Thanks!!!
End of the story I guess.
Will read through this to be a better driver!

  • Park in an off street car park. You should be able to get the full day for like $5-10.

On-Street parking is like a blanket $7 per hour
