Lenovo Yoga 530 (Battery Life Is Poor Compared To That Advertised)

I purchased this laptop for university two weeks ago and the battery life is advertised as up to ten hours. Obviously I wasn't expecting this but the fact that I get less than two hours on a brightness I can barely see is quite concerning. I spoke to tech support and they said it is normal to expect 2-3hrs from this laptop due to the 45wh battery and that 10hrs is when the laptop is in idle mode. I have updated the drivers and done everything they suggested to improve battery life. Upon searching the net I have found similar cases.

The website advertised up to ten hours “the Yoga 530 is portable enough to take anywhere, and its up-to-10-hour battery life lets you stay there for a while. If you do need a little extra juice, 15 minutes of charging* will give two additional hours of use when your battery is dwindling”. Then on another page of the website it states 9 hours.

I would never have purchased this laptop if I had of known how crappy the battery was. This wont even get me through a full tutorial at university and for $1050 plus a $125 pen I would expect much better . I contacted Lenovo and they told me they charge a 20% restocking fee if you want to refund your purchase. Can anyone give me some advice on what to do or if they have experienced similar issue?

  • *up to.

I don't think they've (technically) misled you. You've admitted you get *up to 10 hours.

How does it perform in idle?

    • when its in idle about six hours

  • +2

you should perform a battery health report in windows. that should tell you what the battery capacity is and if anything out of spec or abnormal.

From reviews the laptop is supposed to last 7 hours when it was benchmarked.

  • Well most reviews mention the shitty battery life:

it has a comparatively short battery life.

    Mainly its buyer beware.

Does it have a USB c port. Is it possible to take a 20,000 USB battery? This may give you all you need for $60 or so (or even less).

    • Yes it does. The fact that they got 7 hours and I get less than two is concerning.

      • It's very concerning and I'd not accept the it says 'up to 10 hrs' as a valid explanation.

      • Perhaps tell them you have run a software test on the battery and its reporting dead cells.

        See what they say.

I could see you getting battery replacement, otherwise off to consumer affairs for a refund (choose your poison first).

  • Maybe buy big power bank. The one that can charge laptop.

  • This is humanity fault we cant invent new battery technology since like dinosaur age. Still the old lithium. The more features you get from a device, the less battery life.

  • I have a Yoga 530. What I have found is that it is essential to use the default Power settings in Settings. If you do that, the battery life is close to advertised. If you increase the screen brightness above the defaults, it just kills battery life. In my opinion, the default screen brightness is too full, but there you go……
