Fishing gear...

Hi All,

Kids starting to get into fishing, old hobby of mine. Back in the day Kmart was the best place to get fishing gear, but seems they don’t sell much anymore. Where’s the place these days ?

I buy mine from BCF/Rays Outdoors.

Aussie Disposals is another place to consider.

I'd love to start a steak restaurant where you can pick a cow at the restaurant, shoot it with your family, take the 5 pieces of steak you want to eat then and there and then throw out the rest.

      Id call it 'Big Fresh'.

So Thevofa is abbreviation for ‘the vegan of Aus’?

Kmart still has some stuff, albeit extremely limited and low end. $50ish for complete setup.

BCF on sale days. Cheapest place to buy entry level proper gear. $100ish per complete setup (rod, reel and line).

  • BCF probably your best bet. Wait for sales to get decent prices on gear. Speak to the guys/girls at your local store as to what gear will suit the style of fishing you want to do.

  • Anaconda will price match BCF

BCF it is then, will head down this afternoon.

@thevofa we catch and release. I want the kids out in the fresh air not stuck on screens.

How about you go for a walk along the water, or sit on the shore with some pencils and paper, or anything else that doesn't involve hurting another animal?

Throwing them back doesn't make a difference.

Perhaps have another think about it.

Why form bonds with your kids over completely unnecessary violence?

I respectfully disagree. Each to their own :)

          Each to their own

Except the fish right? They still get tortured for minding their own business?

Never engage someone like that in civil discussion. You'll never get reason or logic, just a whole lot of emotive exclamations and high horsing.

(I mean, the rhetoric references memes… Not even good ones).

@[Deactivated]: I could have rather posted a link to the Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness but then would have most likely been accused of some other type of high horsing.

Notwithstanding, when will you finally realize that vegans don't ride horses?

Would have been much better to say we only catch what we eat - and is legal.

  • Kmart has really cut down

Bigw is now the kmart of old

  • I'd check out your local tackle store…if you have one nearby. You might pay a little extra but you get to talk to someone who knows their stuff and you can always take it back if something goes wrong, although rods and reels are pretty reliable these days unless you go ultra low end.
Online shops are also good to use eg. Dinga, ebay, ray and annes etc but you need to know what you are looking for and prices.
Used to buy several items eg. reels and braid from the USA when the dollar was at parity but not so attractive at the moment.

  • STORES: Aliexpress/Ebay/Dinga/Rays (online), BCF/Anaconda/Kmart/Bigw (physical)

REELS - Aliexpress (very similar price 30-50% sales by BCF)
    ROD - BCF (price matched)
    BRAID/MONO- Aliexpress
HOOKS - Any of the stores, usually cheaper online on ebay/aliexpress
    SINKERS - BCF/Anaconda

Much quicker to go BCF to get all your needs (go when there is a sale/events night for 20% off everything)

If you're after bits and pieces online is the way to go

  • Welcome back to the world of fishing! It's great to hear you're reintroducing this hobby to your kids. The landscape for buying fishing gear has indeed evolved, and while department stores like Kmart may offer basic gear, specialized fishing shops and online retailers now provide a more extensive range of quality fishing equipment suited for both beginners and seasoned anglers.

In Australia, there are several reputable places where you can find fishing gear tailored to your needs:

    1. Local Tackle Shops: These specialized stores are often staffed by experienced anglers who can offer valuable advice and recommendations based on local fishing conditions and target species.

    2. Outdoor and Sporting Goods Stores: Chains like BCF (Boating, Camping, Fishing), Anaconda, and Rays Outdoors have a wide selection of fishing gear, from entry-level to professional-grade equipment.

    3. Online Retailers: For convenience and a broader selection, online fishing gear retailers offer everything you need, often with detailed product descriptions and reviews to help you make informed choices. One such destination is Finned Fishen(https://www.finnedfishen.com.au/), which caters to all levels of fishing enthusiasts. They offer a variety of gear, including kids' fishing combos, which could be perfect for getting your children started.

    4. Fishing Expos and Shows: These events are great for finding gear, as they often feature a wide range of vendors and show specials. Plus, they can be a fun and educational outing for the family.

    5. Fishing Clubs and Community Boards: Local fishing clubs or community boards can also be a good source of information on where to buy gear. Members often share tips on their favorite shopping spots and might even sell or trade their own gear.

When choosing gear for your kids, consider starting with simple, user-friendly equipment that matches their size and skill level. A lightweight, durable rod and reel combo specifically designed for children can make their initial fishing experiences more enjoyable and encouraging.

Remember to check for any local fishing regulations regarding licenses or permits needed, especially if you plan to fish in freshwater or specific fishing reserves. Happy fishing, and enjoy making new memories with your kids by the water!
