  • Why so cheap?

    • +10

Because they are really dry, and not at all tasty.
The budget dates from Coles, Woolies, Aldi, etc are far better.
I literally wouldn't bother if they were free.

      • +1

I agree. Bought some during the last clear-out. Awful…

        • I also got some for $4 last time. Quality is pretty low. Alot of small ones mixed in that aren't very flavorful. Bigger ones are ok. At $2 its still pretty decent.

      • Are they good for smoothies? Or should I just go for the coles/woolies one?

      • +2

I like em dry instead of soft and mushie, these are good dates if your not in a hurry.

    • +2

This type of date is considered low quality that’s why

      • +4

And yet they plaster the word "Premium" all over the box…

        Talk about misleading labeling!

        • +7

Yes just to fool Australians, I lived in UAE (where this date is from) and this strain is considered low quality

        • It's a premium box, silly. The dates? "just average".

  • +4

Would have been imported for the Ramadan season which has just past. These are great to use in sticky date pudding etc. Off to buy some.

    • +1

I just eat them from the jar to be honest haha

  • What’s the country of origin
I bought 2$ ones from coles (Origin: uae) and it’s meh

    • UAE

    • +2

In UAE this strain of date is not wanted so exported to other countries it’s crap

  • thanks for the heads up,good timing . great for my diet program

    • +8

How come? They're full of sugar..

      • +1

replacing normal sugar with natural ones.

        • +2

Suger is from sugar cane .

          • @slackme: But processed

            • +1

@spy: Well you should limit sugar use from all sources including from milk, fruit, and starch, etc. Date can be over 80% sugar. It takes some work for the body to metabolise it but still having large amounts is no good. It gives you the energy but not a proportional amount of other nutritions.

        • You’d be better to replace added sugar with no sugar.

The only time you need to add sugar to anything is when baking, and baked goods should be such a small part of your diet that they don’t matter.

Nothing quite like a cheap date.

    • Lol true

  • +2

If they are a bit dry, soaking them for a bit makes them better. Water works, but feel free to experiment with sailor jerry.

    • Is that a Gerbil related experiment?

    • +5

Rum date it is. Will she be agressive?

  • Pro-tip - go to your nearest Middle Eastern grocer, buy tahini and put that on top. They become a lot nicer and softer.

    • tahini is sold everywhere .. i usually get Mayvers tahini to make Halva

      • I find it to be much cheaper in the Middle Eastern grocers, and there's more of a variety to choose from.

        • +2

My local green grocer which is run by Arabs sells 1kg tubs for $11.50 .. You can get Mayvers 385gr jars for $2.64 when on special at Coles, Woolies and Amazon(under $7 for a kilogram). Tahini has a long shelf life so I stock up when they go on special.

        • Takes about 14 hrs to get there

    • Pit the date and fill it with tahini…
It's also a great joke on stoners. When they have the munchies make them one of these, and with their dry mouth, they'll be chewing for days.

  • +1

These looked terrible, i stayed away.

The Tunisian dates (250g) were on special for $3.50 and have been lovely.

    • Just be careful with Tunisian dates many are known to put sugar syrup or processed date syrup to sweeten them further and soften them. Check the ingredients

    • Loaded with syrup

  • البركة أكبر

    • Wot?

    • God is great

      • He's pretty mediocre actually.

    • Wat?

  • +1

I bought 2 boxes for the kids for school holidays snacks and they are loving them. I have to be careful they don't eat too many though!

  • +2

Pro-tip 2 - place a few dates in some milk and place it in the fridge for a few hrs.. caramel flavoured milk

    • Pro Tip #3
Pit them (easily done with a small kitchen knife), them store them in the freezer in airtight container.
Delicious cool, chewy caramels whenever you want.

    Barakah Wins. OzBargainality.

  • I'm just here for the upvotes followed by later comments complaining how disappointed they are despite plenty of reviews last time around: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/458473

At least they're cheaper per kilo than the generics this time around. Good for people that like spitting out seeds and testing their teeth/tongue dexterity.

Cheapest date my wife has been on

Please do not buy UAE products
if you do you are ignorant to what is happening in Yemen
I think most people feel same way that is why not selling and is reduced.

    • you mean Saudi Arabia** just had a look, you're right UAE are part of the coalition

    • +4

You should probably add a few more countries to your boycott list, including the UK and US.

    • -6

Australia raped and killed thousands of afghani innocent civilians, your point?

        • +4

Guess you haven't learned yet that we have freedom of opinion in western countries, even if it's against the state.

      • We'll dutifully follow when Trump launches his terrorist attacks in Iran too.

        • I doubt that there's actually an appetite for conflict with Iran, political bluster and brinkmanship notwithstanding.

Open the Iranian can of worms and I don't think there'll be a way back from a huge global conflict if its supporters decide to weigh in and we end up with another proxy war in the region.

Trump cares too much about his personal reputation to have World War III on his list of achievements.

    • UAE is in coalition with Saudi Arabia, i am sure you have checked who else is selling Saudis means of wagging this war on Yemen and boycotted their products

  • Hard to call this a deal at any price.

  • +2

    Arabian nights, like Arabian days

        Yeh 100% the actual joke

  • These dates are absolutely horrendous.
