NSW Rego in ACT, Brisbane, Melbourne to Avoid Fines

Has anyone re-registered their NSW car in either ACT, Brisbane or Melbourne, purely for cheaper Rego?

What was the process?

How did you find an address to use in the other state?

What happens to NSW Fines?

So you want to continue living in NSW, but have your car registered in QLD ACT or VIC?

Could be a big problem if the address on your Drivers Licence is different to your Rego! "But Officer I can explain……"

Agree, anything is a possibility, as is getting Cancer.

Has anyone actually done it, though?

      • Sorry if you are having medical problems.

Just pointing out that there could be legal problems if you are pulled over.

There is also the possibility of Insurance Companies pulling the old "Car was technically not legally Registered" line if you make a claim, etc, etc.

name and address on licence doesn't have to match name and address on rego. Also, there is no requirement to carry rego papers with you. It's all in the cloud.

Insurance issues are BS too. If it's registered, it's registered

There is more to the process than just finding an address (in the other state) that you want to use as your license address.
The car also needs to pass roadworthy in the new state, and you need to go through a registration process there, and then claim a registration refund from NSW.

If you do all of that, and then get pulled over in NSW, they may ask how long you have been there etc., as you can only stay for about 3 months without changing over your license / car rego.

    Just pay your fines.

I'm not sure how much you think you may save, but be prepared for all the other 'hassles' that would come with, effectively, breaking the laws of those states.

      • Collecting plastic bottles/aluminium cans off the street and people's bins are also a way of saving money but most people would probably consider the effort would not be worth the reward.

Doing something like this is probably similar. You would have to drive your car interstate, find an address with someone willing to say you live there, changeover rego and pay any costs associated with getting a new rego. You also run into the risk of getting fined for not having changing your rego, people not forwarding your fines/renewal notices to you (so you rack up large bills).

You'll probably find that the rego in the new state is not that much cheaper than the rego in NSW anyway.

Not a great plan, from Service NSW. “If you've moved from interstate and are now living in NSW, you need to register your vehicle in NSW. You can do this at a service centre.

Please note: If a vehicle is kept or garaged in NSW and doesn't have a NSW registration, it is considered 'unregistered'. Severe penalties apply if you drive an unregistered or uninsured vehicle.”

Save money, not to defraud the system that's trying to fine you for your wrongdoings.

      • We are on Ozbargain to save money, and registration in another State is a way of saving money.

The hire car companies tried registering all their cars in the cheapest state many years ago and they were shut down and forced to distribute their registrations.

  • itstricky indeed

seems like a lot of work for very minimal return.
