  I might be wrong but, I always though that the purpose of he ring light is to use it with the camera inside the ring, to avoid shadows.

    Primarily yes, it's preferred to have the camera/phone in the ring rather than outside, but it's not always the case.

    However, this light is on a tripod so you'd be able to hold your phone or camera and aim it through the ring just fine.

      Holding the phone behind this ring while trying to record videos is not the most practical solution

  Does this have any flicker at all? One of the reviews I saw said theirs flickers. Also can the light be removed from the tripod if you want to mount it elsewhere?
