I ordered a Tuff Tonneaus soft tonneau cover for a dual cab from Autobarn as they didn't have any in stock. On the Tuff Tonneaus website, the cost was $399 with free delivery but Autobarn were going to charge delivery on top of the $399 cost. I mentioned it was $399 with free delivery from the Tuff Tonneaus website so they they ended up charging $399 to order it in. I paid a $200 deposit.
A few days later, I realised that the one I ordered required drilling and riveting the brackets to the tub, and there is a later version (for $100 more) where the brackets simply clamp onto the side of the tub. I went into the store and asked if I could change my order but since the ordered cover was due to arrive, the manager advised that since it was a 'special order', he would need to charge me an extra $60 to pay for delivery ($30 each way) to cancel the previous order. Noticing he was quite adamant, I asked if I could just pay $50 and he agreed. I decided that I'll just order the tonneau cover myself from the Tuff Tonneaus website.
Autobarn's refund policy doesn't mention anything about special orders so I was thinking of questioning the policy with their head office, but thought I'd get the OzBargain consensus first. :)
Change of mind refunds arn't covered under ACCC. Its a 'goodwill' policy from retailers. That being said, every retailer I have dealt with has had a no change of mind policy on special order items.
I think them charging you $50 for postage return is not only fair, but also surprisingly nice of them
