Which do you like and why? Which do you dislike and why?
Wood looks nice but I worry they will take up too much room?
Do velvet hangers really save space?

Do velvet hangers really save space?
this is the most domestic question ever to be asked, in the history of the internet.
I consider this a fine compliment.
Plastic for shirts and wood for heavier items like jackets.
I've got the ones from costco that come in a 50 pack. Best hangers I've used
what are they made of?
I hang my clothes wet so anything with even a little bit of weight is best to have bulky hangers like wood or molded plastic. But generally I use the cheap plastic ones because I need too many of them.
i've heard the cheaper velvet hangers will stain wet clothing. but brand name ones are advertised as being especially good for wet clothes.
Depends on what you're hanging.. But you can buy velvet coat hangers from Kmart in a huge box
Wood, wood is always good
Wood for jackets/coats
Pros - supports weight of fabric and preserves shape
Cons - take up alot of wardrobe space
Non-slip plastic for rest of clothes
Pros - can hang wet clothes to dry & cuts down on ironing, keeps clothes from falling, low profile = wardrobe space saver
Cons - difficult to locate good designs that don't cause hanger bumps/stretch clothes out of shape
Dislikes:
- wire hangers create hanger bumps
- flocked/velvet - cannot handle the furry texture
haptodysphoria
I am the same but only with food thankfully
Ha! Only applies to flocked clothes hangers
by the way your answer was the most helpful
@bargain huntress: Thanks bargain huntress - a well-studied topic of mine since wardrobe space is never enough.
Did you end up getting the Joy Mangano hangers or otherwise?
@[Deactivated]: I contacted JM and they replied with no plans to ever sell them here, and I couldn't afford international shipping.
Anyway after much ado I have a great system now that I am very pleased with.
I managed to hang up my entire wardrobe, which was my goal. That is definitely because of the velvet hangers, they are a bit magical.
I could not decide, so i decided to get different hangers for different purposes but all with the same hook colour, shape, and size as I thought that might be enough to give me the uniformity i desired, and it works great!:
generic velvet hangers for tops from kmart - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/flocked-hangers---pack-of-3…
metal clippy hangers for bottoms from kmart - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/metal-clip-hangers---set-of…
lidded basket to keep spares in from target - https://www.target.com.au/p/hyacinth-large-basket-with-lid-n…
And i added to my room a valet stand for clothes i am currently wearing which i love:
bamboo rack from kmart - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/bamboo-hanging-rack/2023875
wooden top hangers from kmart - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/16-wooden-hangers/2295820
wooden bottom hangers from target - https://www.target.com.au/p/5-wooden-clip-hangers-natural/56…
and an open basket to keep spares in from the local dollar shop
Only tiny niggle so far is that the clippy bottom hangers take up more room if they are next to each other and butting clips.
@bargain huntress: Well done!
The valet stand is a great idea - wish I had the room for it.
I know exactly what you mean about the metal clip hangers - I have the 3-tiered ones which saves on a bit of space.
Solid gold or GTFO
Nah bro, titanium all the way.
diamond, diamond coathangers are what we really need
Give me the ones that grandma makes, wood with the crochet 🧶 around them, until the hook falls off!
i have made a few of those in my time. you can glue the hook back into the hole if that happens.
Good idea 👍
Not plastic. Become brittle over time.
Not timber, attracts termites.
lol
that's a good point. they do seem to last many years though. but they're not recyclable or biodegradable.
Always wood, who cares about a few cm of space? Seriously.
it might depend how many clothes you have. i'm thinking 3mm vs 1.5cm adds up over say 100 coat hangers.
Where is the poll? Wire is good, so many other uses = fishing stuff out of drains, car antenna, holding stuff together when no cable ties available….
