These are good machines. Don't have one myself but did lots of research last month and ended up getting 9360 with 1080p screen, mostly due to reviews that said 4k display is beautiful but that and touchscreen takes up more power etc.

Worth looking into for someone contemplating.

    • +3

I'd also go the 1080p non touch screen if they had it. Want the bigger SSD and ram tho.

      • +2

Yep. I got the 9360 with 13.3 1080p non touch screen, 16gb and 512 SSD. $1799 on the 20% off last month or whenever. Absolutely blown away. Recommend.

        • Could you please the link or the seller :)?

          • +4

@badinh: Here is link for the 16GB/512 SSD which is now only $1679 delivered with the 20% off:

            https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-13-9360-Laptop-8th-Gen-…

(part of me is in tears on paying 120$ more for mine a month ago but heck I'd do it again at 1799. absolute steal at 1679 IMHO.) Edit: Paid with St George Signature Black card or whatever…. wonder if can claim price drop assurance hmmmm

            • +1

              @cartwheelz623: Great :D
              Thank you mate :)

            • @cartwheelz623: Is the drive in this a M.2 PCIe NVMe? or a M.2 SATA?

Also how's the keyboard on Dells compared to Lenovos?

              • @lomo: Says that it has a PCIe Solid State Drive

Not sure about Lenovo keyboards but this one is backlit and has good travel. Seems sturdy enough. Sorry can't help more

                • @cartwheelz623: Cool thanks

just read this review, no mention of drives

                  https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/dell-xps-13-9360

"Despite its keys' shallow, 1.22 millimeters of travel (1.5 to 2 mm is typical for a regular laptop), the XPS 13 offers a good typing experience"

"if you want a business and productivity laptop with a superior typing experience, consider Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon."

                  Still tempted though :)

            • +1

@cartwheelz623: Just bought. Been holding out for an XPS. Thanks for the link!

            • @cartwheelz623: Hi Cartwheel,

Pardon the silly question, but is this the 2019 XPS13?

              Thank you

              • +1

@longhaul84: No I believe the 9360 ones above are 2017.

The 9380 in the OP is at the very least 2018 if not 2019 , but I stand to be corrected

        • any issues with coil whine? i've steered clear from the xps 13 for years because of it, but i'm tempted to cross my fingers and take the plunge.

          • +1

@dirkgonnadirk: None in the past few weeks that I have noticed. Totally forgot about that issue till your comment. Now I am listening for it more actively, but no issues!

            • @cartwheelz623: thanks. sorry for making you paranoid :) it's more a thing when you're charging than on battery i believe.

          • +1

@dirkgonnadirk: My XPS 13 is 2 years and 2 months old (warranty just ran out) and I just got a dead pixel on my screen and my fan is about to die (easy to replace though).
Not mad though its a great laptop, I had the xps 15 and 13 and got rid of the 15 to keep the 13.

EDIT: I have the 4k screen and battery still goes well.

      • They have the 1080p version - 9380, 16gb ram and 512ssd: $1919.20 with code.
for anyone interested - link: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-13-Laptop-9380-8th-Gen-…

    • 4k at that screen size is also pretty useless afaik

  • +1

Damn nice deal… buy this, or wait for the new 2in1…

    • I'm waiting for the new 2-in-1, the battery improvements and 16:10 ratio should make it more suitable for my use case. But good deal on this

    • That one's not coming till late this year. If it doesn't delay.

    • Yeah wondering this too - the new 2in1 has the 10th gen Ice Lake CPU, XPS 15 will get it too

Any word on when the regular XPS 13's will get 10th gen?

      • XPS 15 is getting 9750H which is very very incrementally better than 8750H.

        • Really? 10th gen promises more power…although no benchmarks available. Ok that's interesting…

          • @G Wok: 9750H is not 10th gen. I don't know if there's going to be a second new XPS 15 release this year, but the latest one is not ice lake based.

9750H is already an incremental upgrade, but thermal throttling inside this thin chassis that isn't good at dissipating heat means it does not perform appreciably better than the old gen and in some cases does worse. The review I watched said to wait for price drops on 8750H instead.

Dell have not updated the chasis on XPS 15 for 4 years now, and it's showing its age. It already had thermal issues before and they're getting worse with newer gen chips.

The design they use looks nice. It's just that it doesn't offer the best performance.

            • @lostn: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14506/dell-launches-xps-15-75…

Yeah Ice Lake for XPS 15 & 13 2in1 was just announced, selling out of the US in July.

Although I'm not sure if the thermal issues are still going to be similar

              • @G Wok: From your article:

The new Dell XPS 15 comes in the same anodized aluminum chassis with a carbon figer palmrest (featuring an 11 – 17 mm z-height) as its predecessors, but its internals were upgraded quite significantly. The new notebook is based on Intel’s 9th Gen Core processors and can be equipped with the eight-core Core i9-9980HK (up to 5 GHz, 16 MB cache) with which can be overclocked because of unlocked multiplier.

10th gen is for the 13 2-in-1 not XPS 15.

                This table confirms it: https://images.anandtech.com/doci/14506/XPS-15_S_575px.jpg

                • @lostn: Ah apologies, you're totally right somehow I connected the two. Thanks.

Very odd they would only upgrade the 13 2in1 but no other line to 10th. Perhaps next year then which is a long time to wait. Seems like a good jump in performance for Ice Lake.

  • How much is the i5 or below version?

    • For some reason not allowing me to publish links.
      It's around $1600 for non-touch 1080p i5 8/256GB.

  • Is the thunderbolt port on this model (9380) 4x lanes? IIRC the older generations were 2 lanes.

    • -1

Not sure what you mean by 4x Lanes but more info on the port here

      Description below:
Dell XPS13 (9380) Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) port with Power Delivery (Primary)
Supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C, DisplayPort 1.2, Thunderbolt 3 and also enables you to connect to an external display using a display adapter. Provides data transfer rates up to 10 Gbps for USB 3.1 Gen 2 and up to 40 Gbps for Thunderbolt 3. Supports Power Delivery that enables two-way power supply between devices. Provides up to 5 V/3 A power output that enables faster charging

      Hope this answers your question.

      • +1

Lanes as in PCI-E lanes. More lanes = more bandwidth = better speeds for Thunderbolt devices.

It's an especially important spec to know if you're intending to use it for high speed IO like external GPUs.

        https://www.dell.com/support/article/au/en/audhs1/qna44089/t…

This support article unfortunately doesn't list all XPS models. Might need to check with Dell support before purchase.

        • I think I read somewhere that it is 4x lanes however these 4 are shared across the two ports, so if you have two devices plugged in then it will cut in half.

    • Yes, 4 lanes from the 9370 onwards. I'm currently enjoying reasonable eGPU performance on mine.

Personally I wouldn't touch a 9360. 9380 also moves the webcam from the bottom to the top of the display panel -> less 'nostril cam'.

      • How are you getting around "dongle hell"?

        • What dongle hell?

My USB stick has a slider and has old school USB on one end and USB-C on the other.

I bought some cables from Amazon at the time I moved to USB-C, which cover everything I need. USB-C to USB-B (big old external drives), USB-C to Micro-B (modern external drives). I have one generic USB-C to USB-A adapter, which I never use. All were just a couple of dollars each.

eGPU runs USB-C, monitors connect directly to the video card using HDMI and DP. Before I got the GPU, I connected my monitor through USB-C.

    • I believe so.
Quad core chips now get the "full" 16 lanes to the CPU, havent seen any 2 lane versions since then.
I can confirm the 15" current gen has 4 lanes and its sharing the same number with a GPU, so pretty safe!

Anyway, dam good price for the spec.
Trying hard not to buy it and sell my XPS 13 2in1.
SLAPS MYSELF Wait for the IceLake 2in1 and get everything you want!

  • +1

    That's a cracker deal.

  • +3

This is a great laptop and it's beautiful in white. I went for the 1080p version because of the greatly improved battery life but the 4k/touch model is definitely nice.

    • That was a good read thanks for sharing!
Just wondering, what if the resolution was set to 1080p on the 4K screen when out and about. Surely it'd achieve similar battery life.

      • errrr. NO. 4k Screen is power hungry.

        • +1

I have this laptop.. Lowering res to 1080 from 4k does not achieve similar battery life as a native 1080p unit. Also depends what you are doing eg. watching video, rendering etc. then no the battery savings ain't great. Maybe browsing the internet you can find some saving as the gpu ain't working too hard. You will find more battery savings if you lessen the brightness of the screen.

  • Guys im tossing up between this and the X1 Thinkpad Yoga Gen 3. Any thoughts? Other than price, anyone have experience with the Thinkpad X1 Yoga?

    Cheers.

    • +1

Depends if you want a better build, RAM slots and a bigger screen, or something smaller/lighter without upgrades (The XPS).
Edit: I lie, Lenovo have gone and soldered the RAM, bastards!

      • so the soldiering is bead because i cant upgrade more than 16GB [if that's what i end up getting], is that what you mean?

How about build quality. What are your thoughts?

    • On this boat too. Currently I am also looking at yoga 15 700 (the gtx 1050 seems to have throttle issue) & "as new" Inspiron 15 7586 with mx130 from dell outlet. I was told "as new" systems are unused, box still sealed etc. They are from cancelled order.

  • +2

Great price. Got the non-4K version last week. imo, 4k is a bit of an overkill on a portable machine but nice to have.
    Happy to answer questions

    • Hows the battery life on the non 4k model?

      • +1

Battery was my main concern as well since I was considering the xps 15 too. I don't have any numbers but I am getting about 3 days on a full charge. I would say I have pushed it a little past average consumption. Great for a portable device.

    • +4

I'd happily get the non-4k version if it was touchscreen but the non-touch is a deal breaker for me. The touchscreen increases my productivity.

      • +2

The screen wobbles every time you touch it. The hinge is not strong enough to keep it still. I don't think it's practical.

      • may i ask what do you normally use the touch screen for

like is it watching movies on the train, word processing or presentations or what?

        • It could be just me but I can't stand using any laptop trackpad. I'm a heavy user of excel, I mostly deal with large data sets, pivot tables and it's just so much easier to touch a cell rather than navigate to it. I also use touch for web browser scrolling, opening files/folders and preparing flyers for events (moving pictures around). I guess I'm just really against using a tracking 🤷🏻‍♂️. I do also use a mx master as daily driver but do still end up using the touch. Who knows I might regret it for this laptop when it arrives because of screen wobble.

    • coil whine?

      • +1

nothing that I have noticed so far. still early days.

  • oled version coming soon right?

  • Does the 80 in 9380 designate the series (i.e. latest series) or the model in the same series?

    • Yes, the other models are: 9360, 9370
I have the 9370 as it was closer to my price point, it's been a good notebook.

      • So the 9380 is 2019 and the 9370 is say 2018?

        • Yes.

          • @Hammo: Presuming next year's model is 9390. But what about 2021's model? Will it be called 9400?

  • I got one at $2099 last month. Put it on Gumtree for sale on the second week after the purchase. It got stolen during the inspection. The CBA purchase security insurance covered the damage with $100 excess. And I am looking at this model right now.

    Conclusion: buy the 1080p model.

    • +5

wow, would like to hear the story.

    • That sucks dude. People can be such lowlife scum :(

    • ouch mate, sorry to hear that. would also be interested in hearing the story :)

    • Bjesus, did you turn your back at a public place?

I always request to communicate via sms before i hand out address, so at least i have their mobile number but i guess even that can mean nothing in terms of security

    • +3

Called me at 8 am for inspection. The thief arrived at 9 and entered the house using the excuse of “need to borrow the toilet”. He Attempted to distract me by asking for a flash drive to reinstall the system and a printed receipt for accounting purpose. Heard the door shut when I turned back to boost up the desktop. He ran into an escape VW golf with a driver waiting inside at the corner street. A Triton driver helped me to chase but lost them at the traffic lights.

Expensive lesson. Lucky enough I didn’t get killed.

      • Guessing you didn't get their numberplates then? :( $100 excess isn't too bad, though some justice would be sweet

        • +4

One thing I want to share is that home and content insurance doesn't cover this since 'he' has been invited into the house.

But CBA purchase security insurance does (travel insurance).

    • you should setup another sting with a different account and then wait for him to contact / show up

      with Cops on standby

Also every mobile number in Australia is linked to a drivers license or passport but the police wont give it out to you (but they can use it for crime investigation purposes)

  • +1

The ram is soldered but you can upgrade the SSD fairly easily. Dell does source the 4K panel from both AUO and sharp. The sharp one, SHP14AD are slightly better in terms of color gamut, max brightness, etc, however the one from AUO is PWM-free(flicker-free, dc-dimming, good on the eyes), and there is no way to tell what panel you are getting until you check from device manager.Last time I checked 3 unit in JBHIFI back-to-back and they are all from SHARP.

  • I wonder if I'm the only one who read it as $215.92, wishful thinking I suppose

  • Wow great price. I got the 2in1 version last week but with 3yr warranty and 1tb ssd. That I got for around $3100 so this is a great buy.

  • Great machine. Typing this message on mine now.

For comparison, I paid ~$1800 for the non-touch FHD equivalent (same spec otherwise). About a month ago.

  • Hi,

Apologies for possibly wrong question in the thread but I aint aware of exact place where this question should go.

Can someone please comment on battery life of:

    Dell New Inspiron 15 3585 Laptop AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 8GB RAM 256GB SSD

I am looking to buy this from long time but not sure about battery life. I am not going to use for gaming, just study purpose, general browsing, MS Office work etc so I am looking for laptop with stellar battery life. If not this what will you suggest?

    Cheers.

    • +2

AMD 2000 mobile chips generally have high idle power draw, so if you're after battery life, you're probably better getting an Intel chip. The average office laptop has 28% better battery life compared to that Inspiron according to notebookcheck: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-15-3585-L… . That Inspiron also doesn't have a replaceable battery, so when the battery life starts getting worse after you've used it for a while, you'll have no options.

ThinkPad E490 has much better battery life (but still doesn't have a replaceable battery), and is around the same price. It actually has 28% better battery life than the average office laptop: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E490-i5-8265U-… . If you want a replaceable battery, you could buy an older secondhand T series ThinkPad and get a new battery for it.

      • Thank you very much BB. Appreciate your help

  • 4k on a 13.3" screen seems a little excessive.

    • Yeah it is. I think even on the XPS15 it's overkill. Only good if you're connecting it to an external 4k screen… Otherwise there's little to no difference when compared to 1080p on 13.3" screen.

      • 4K content looks mighty nice on the 13.3!
