    Bought. Thanks OP

Bollocks of course I buy the ebay one and miss out on the $40 cashback

    • just return the eBay one…

      • can you do that easily? There's a button that says 'ask' for return and I'm not keen on paying for two and then finding out Bind Lee won't cancel it

        • +3

Buy this, if you cant return the ebay one, return this one. Amazon is easier to deal with.

        • There's an option to cancel the transaction if it is yet to be shipped.

  • Wow, thanks OP. I just bought one

  • -2

Great machine for the price with cashback. It's an average cup of coffee compared to other machines though :(

    • +1

      Like which machines?

      • -1

EM7000 blows it out of the water, I have upgraded to the BES920 (haven't unwrapped it) and have a BES990 sitting in the shop though.

        • Agree, EM7000 coupled with BCG820. Both are regularly seen on sale.
Some of the improvements are dual thermoblocks, milk temperature gauge, 58mm portafilters.

          • @[Deactivated]: The 54MM is almost a 'why bother' factor for me. Using the single basket I CANNOT get anywhere near a proper espresso shot size. 58MM on the Sunbeam and I can hit that sweet spot 98% of the time, same with shot timing.

        • I'll take your 870 off your hands for a very cheap price :)

          • @serpserpserp: I'm in a different city, plus giving it away to charity with a BMF600 included. Works 100% as well.

        • +1

In what way exactly does EM7000 blow this machine out of the water?

    • I'm no coffee nut by any means but this machine does the job for me. Get some fresh beans and really it's not too much of a difference from going to a cafe. Of course if you are an absolute coffee nut you may notice more of a difference. Can't go wrong for this price though.

      • +1

Absolutely, honestly… I think it's more the inbuilt grinder that lets it down. I probably should tinker with it a little more but since I've un-officially binned it I'm moving on.

That being said… HOLY CRAP FILLING IT WITH WATER IS EASY! Best thing about the machine!

(WORD TO THE UNWISE: USE THE DOUBLE CUP SINGLE WALL BASKET, the single cup is so small you barely get any coffee taste, particularly due to the small 54mm portafilter meaning you have to under-dose)

        • +2

I'd say you qualify as a coffee nut :) - There just isnt enough time in my day to sit and obsess about such small differences in a cup of coffee, no hate to those who do though.

          • +1

@BargainKen: Tried being a chef… takes way too long to master it (I have just spent the past 10 years studying in one field) not to mention I did the business plan and… let's just say cafe's have alot better success rate and usually don't leave the owners with huge bills in bankruptcy proceedings.

I always want to be one of the best in my field so I study coffee alot. Alot of shit barista's out there with a 6 hour tafe course!

        • Single wall???
          What do you mean
          ?
I use double cup basket but it is still hard to hit the right settings…

        • Yes, I bought this machine a year and a half ago, and I used the Single cup functionality once. Never used it again.

      Good detailed guide here

Your porta filter might only fit 18g, so just adjust your extracted weight expectations.

  • Back to 600. I mean $699

    • It is still listed at $462 under other sellers on the right hand side. EDIT: And now it is gone

      • Still $462 on eBay. I guess someone @ Amazon got wind of this post combining with the cashback and pulled the pin.

  • Thanks OP. Great price. Bought one.

    • Nice! You may have got the last one

  • yeah seems expired to me too

    • We will wait in hope and discuss the machine in the meantime

Does anyone know how much better is the coffee compared to a pod machine and is it comparable to cafe coffee?

      • I upgraded to this (the black one) a while ago, used pods before then, and I really like it. Very easy to use, quick to warm up, and coffee tastes better. Plus I hated all the waste with the coffee pods so it's good to no longer have that problem

        • Way cheaper than pods for sure, a bag of Aldi medium or dark roast beans will set you back about $12/kg which isnt bad to start with, you can move up to the more trendy $30-50/kg beans if you want to try other blends out.

          • @BargainKen: Thank you

          • @BargainKen: Or just put Aldi beans into your pods! Set grind settings to 11 or 12.

For froth, microwave small amount of milk in cup for 30sec. Add a pinch of sugar. Froth it up with a $2 frape mixer from Ikea (called a 'produkt' People ask me what machine I have. Its a $49 machine with $50 cashback, plus $30 sunbeam conical bur grinder.

Light years ahead of standard pod coffee.

    • +1

It's still available. Look to the right under other sellers. EDIT: And now it is gone

  • I'm actually trying to give mine away with a milk frother to charity. Just finding one with DGR status, get a receipt and mum gets it back on her tax. Win win!

  • +1

For those who can't see the deal, look under the other sellers section and you will see it is still there for $462. EDIT: And now it is gone.

    • It was showing there, but you couldn't add it to cart…

  • It's coming back. Hurry!! https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/152662625546 eBay deal is up now.

  • +3

Amazon with 12% SB pushed me over the line to fire . Ebay couldn't .

    • That is exactly like me! Amazon with cash back won me over eBay for this coffee machine!

  • +1

How is this compare to a fully automatic machine like https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-DeLonghi-ESAM04110B-Magnific…

    • I have the Delonghi and really want to know this too!

  • How this compare to delonghi primadonna series?

    • What what? Completely different kettle of fish. One is a manual machine and the other is fully automated. A decently tuned auto machine will blow this into the weeds but you'll be paying a price premium.

This is for someone who enjoys being their own barista at a cheap price, it's an entry level all in one machine.

If you have Primadonna money and want some level of automation I'd be looking at the Oracle if you HAD to have Breville, or the Barista touch if you wanted to be a little more hands on

      • Thanks for reply. I do have an old machine (Primadonna S Deluxe ESAM 6600) and wonder if it is worth to upgrade to manual machine.

        • Not to this one (the BES870)… go pay your $150 to do a hands on barista course to see if you want to go further with it. But I'd just keep servicing the Delonghi until it dies a painful death. It's a great machine and unless you are passionate about coffee the novelty wears off quick (on a manual machine)!

If you want, go a different way, get stuck into the manual and play around with the settings on the PD. Can always reset it back to factory anyway.

  • So, got one years ago. No idea how to make decent coffee with it.

    Anyone got settings tips?

    • +2

Same as any other machine, get fresh roasted beans and a good grinder, then work out via trial and error what grind is required to get double the weight of liquid coffee from the weight of the ground beans in 30 seconds.

      • -1

Weird… we all have different techniques :) I generally just go off shot timing and taste. I like a bit of science but a bit of art as well.

        • +1

There is no right way, what ever makes it taste good. What I suggested is just a good starting point…oh yeah only ever use the double cup single wall filter cup thing.

    • +18

I'd come over and drive it for you…

      Single wall, double cup basket

Grind very fine (almost until the wheel stops), tamp with just a sliver of silver remaining visible on the tamp.

Don't be afraid of the pressure gauge, if the needle keeps bouncing you generally are tamping too hard. You don't need to press hard at all with this machine.

Don't put too much ground coffee into the basket either, you need to account for pre-infusion and you'll be smacking the showerhead which you don't want to do.

The pressure needle should be slightly past the halfway mark (pointing upwards), don't be worried if it goes slightly past that either.

Taste every single shot you do, just a small sip to allow the flavours to flow over your tongue. DON'T DRINK THE WHOLE SHOT! You'll be buzzing…

Go to Aldi and get yourself a $12/13 a KG medium roast bag, you'll blow about 30 shots through the machine.

Don't be afraid to grind finer and courser either! This is how you to learn to tune it in. Once you've got a semi-reasonable cup coming through and you can make it consistently, open up the manual and learn how to adjust the temperature of the shot.

Finally… when your shot stops striping and looks like light caramel milk, hit your shot button again to end it. I find if you let it keep running you just get a bitter cup.

Watch as many of these as you can: https://www.youtube.com/user/SeattleCoffeeGear

Crap… almost forgot! Before you make a cup, blow a double shot through the portafilter then wipe the basket dry with a paper towel. It helps heat up the portafilter and bits beforehand to make that first shot in the morning more consistent. Otherwise the water temp drops down past where it should be and creates a sour shot.

When your done run a blank shot again and I wipe my screen clean with another paper towel, same with the portafilter

      • +5

        this was erotic

        • Not really… I just would rather help someone out than have them stumbling around in the dark.

On another note, the learning curve on this machine is stupidly short. After that it's just a matter of fiddling with the settings. Great learner machine!

      • Good one!
When warming up a portafilter placing the cups under it also helps to make them a good temperature.

        • Has an inbuilt cup warmer on the top surface too.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: true but it would take much longer on the morning taking into account current Melbourne weather :)

      • All good except the supermarket beans! Find a good coffee roaster and order fresh beans that come with a recent roast date.

Two of my favourite roasters and blends are five senses - Crompton road and Brew coffee roaster - voodoo brew blend.

        https://brewcr.com/product/voodoobrew/

        https://www.fivesenses.com.au/product/coffee/crompton-road-b…

Both have recipes on the links which gives ideal water temp, weight in and weight out to aim for, though keep in mind your porta filter isn't commercial size so may not fit that weight, just go for the same ratio 1:2 or whatever.

        • Yeah… But you don't want to blow boutique beans through a machine when learning. Waste of money. The Aldi beans are well and truly good enough to get a consistent pour and pressure. When that's nailed by all means get better beans

          • -1

@kronicmacstigator: Different coffee different settings required!!
            Just BTW!

          • +1

@kronicmacstigator: I get what you are saying but the settings are not transferable between fresh beans and supermarket beans.

            • -2

@noise36: No duh! If you can't set per batch and even worse… Time of Day/temp and humidity then either you need to get away from the machine or dig in and learn some more

              • -3

@kronicmacstigator: Wtf are you on about, just stop giving bad advice, supermarket beans serve no purpose at all, just buy good beans and dial in your machine.

                • +2

@noise36: So all the advice I just gave you only picked on the beans… What was your contribution? I'd hate to blow through $50 worth learning how to pull a shot! Since you seem to be made of money if I sent you my bank account details you can wire myself some!

      • Thanks for the post, I'm half inspired to give it another go.

Spent a few weeks producing absolute rubbish and gave up. Back to spending $10 a day at the cafe around the corner on morning coffees so really should try again.

        • -2

Don't listen to that idiot noise36. Buy crap beans, good beans, Aldi beans, old beans, fresh beans. You'll look like a champ when you can dial in a machine

          • @kronicmacstigator: lol get over yourself… guy is trying to make good coffee and you are telling him to use crap beans. Thats like giving advice on how to cook a great steak and telling someone to buy the cheapest cut of meat, failed before you have even started.

            • @noise36: If he can make a bad steak good then how do you think he'll go when he switches to good beans? Practice first…

Why not just tell him to stop wasting money on a shit machine and just get a BES920 to start with?

I suggest getting over yourself first… Not all of us are made of money

  • Bugger missed out on amazon with cashback would have been awesome!
